I tried adding the following line in the iptables file:
Then Restart iptables service, But did not have any success still getting the same error.
How do I open ports on my server.
Having trouble installing packages on a RHEL5 box, when trying to list packages etc I get an error saying: "This system is not registered with RHN. RHN support will be disabled."
Does this mean I can't install packages? This is a licenced copy of RHEL. The reason being I need to install VMware tools on this machine for the memory management facility in VMWARE ESX. I Dont think the fact its running on ESX has anything to do with the error. what I am restricted to, and if I have the licence for this how I can register to enable the use of YUM?
I have two HP Quard core high end server.

View 3 Replies View RelatedOn my local apache web server I had installed gnome desktop, because I wanted it to use as a TV. But when I installed the gnome desktop, my requests for web pages became terribly slow (4-5 seconds!). When I deinstalled the gnome desktop, the request where fast again. But I still want to watch TV on my server, so I wander if people know why the gnome desktop harms the performance of the server?
PS. with gnome desktop, ping was <1 ms, samba server worked like charm, wget localhost was <1 ms, but for some reason, when tried to get a webpage from my webserver to a remote machine, it took seriously 4-5 seconds to load a page.
Wondering if most people have GNOME or KDE installed on their server, and how much memory do these guys consumed.
I have been running a VPS website with only 256MB of RAM fine, though memory does appear to be a bottleneck at times. So got a new server with 1GB RAM but I'm surprised to see after installing CentOS 64-bit with GNOME the memory consumption varies between 600MB-1GB.
The only difference is I've never had used any GUI desktop on the VPS (don't think the hosting company offers one). Wondering if the memory consumption came entirely from the GNOME desktop I installed.
Would most people install with GNOME, configure all the stuff required, and then remove it?
Under GNOME, the X server hangs about every hour under regular use. When this happens, I can usually move the mouse pointer, but nothing else. I can't click anything, I can't type anything, etc. I have CTRL-ALT-Backspace configured to restart the X server, and that works if I do it before it hangs: after it hangs, that doesn't do anything. The only thing I can do right now is reboot the entire machine. How can I figure out why it is hanging? Also, can I somehow restart the X server without rebooting the entire machine?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhat I try is to execute Linux programs from Windows. What I do:
- I run an X Sever in Windows (Xmin).
- I connect to Linux server using putty.
- Stablish DISPLAY to Windows X Server.
- Run Linux application.
Really, what I do for simplifying the work is create, in a shared folder, Windows direct access to do this work. Ex: I create a link called "tora - Run Oracle Administration Tool.lnk".
When users want to run Tora in Windows, they don't have to install it. Just press the link and it runs a .cmd which does the previous operations. So users can run konsole, LibreOffice, tora, ... and all Linux programs as if they where installed in Windows Clients. And as the Linux and Windows computers are joined to Active Directory, each users access has its own configuration for each program.
Thus, they can try this programs without having to install them.
So as I can run all Linux programs... Why not allowing to run a remote desktop (I know I can do it with Vnc, Xrdp, NX, ...) If user run "konsole", a Linux konsole is open in Windows client. And then he can open X programs (I don't create links for all Linux programs, so the can run the konsole link and run any program). After displaying konsole, if I type "konqueror", konqueror is opened in Windows client.
If type kdesktop, desktop of kde is open, but the menu bar, tool bar doesn't appear...
Here is an image: [URL]
I detail it:
- My client is a Windows 7.
- Open a konsole in a remote linux (titled shell-konsole)
- Run kdesktop command.
- A new window titled "KDE Desktop" is opened.
But no menu or application bar is opened. An it doesn't takes my configuration (my configuration is Spanish).
How can I add menu and application bar to that desktop?
I want to sync files from my home directory on my linux server to my local computer. I noticed the instructions for [URL] only has instructions for linux with gnome/kde. can i use dropbox without a gui?
View 1 Replies View RelatedIf I install a server edition and after that I install Gnome and all other ubuntu-desktop applications on that server. Will these
applications be supported through the whole server support time? In other words, what exactly does it mean that the server is supported for longer? Is the number or applications available to the server smaller than to the desktop?Or, similarly, could I build a Server-long supported desktop by hand?
It's my first experience with *nix OS. I needed server for following purposes:
Fileserver on samba
Internet gateway
VPN gateway
DNS
I installed ubuntu 10.04 server edition, but wasn't able to work without graphical environment. So I installed gnome. I installed and tweaked samba and bind9 and network manager and all works fine for now.
So I have a question. What will happen if I remove gnome? Especially with network manager? And what will I gain in performance. It's important because I have only an old Dell Optiplex 150 (933/512/10) serving as a server.
I can go to Places-Network on the gnome menu and pick the share I have on my other machine (I have read-write since the account is in the same user name) I can browse the files on the server using Nautilus, however when I try to open OpenOffice files it fails and won't open them. I have to manually mount the files system as cifs before I can open OpenOffice files. Anybody know why this is happening.

I execute Linux applications in Windows using an X server for Windows and setting DISPLAY variable in Linux to X server of Windows.
Ex: With putty I connect to Linux and setting DISPLAY to my Windows X Server, run Linux OpenOffice. But, is possible to run a KDE or GNOME desktop, with menus, taskbar,.What command do I have to run?
I have a remote CentOS server (5.4 Final) to which I need to add remote access to a GUI front end. I have SSH access to this box (no physical access, I rent it and it is housed in a DC) and I think I have managed to install Gnome correctly:
[root@box ~]# yum grouplist

I've set up home server, which doesn't have to be as powerful as other servers, so I decided to install GUI because of applications that are alternatives to classical GUI applications in headless version requires more skill/knowledge. However, I don't want server to run GUI always at start (which gnome-desktop package does). I need some configuration in KDE/gnome/xfce (haven't decided) that doesn't start GUI after each start (e.g is required to type startx or equivalent command to start GUI)(off topic: can you also recommend good remote-administration with GUI transport ?)

However, during the course of setting up my BIND service, I have done the following:
1) Turned on SELinux
2) Used system-config-security to add the ports TCP:53 and UDP:53
When I tried to save the settings from 2) above, my GNOME desktop delivered via VNC got frozen.
Now when I tried to restart vncserver with "service vncserver restart", I see the following. I am also unable to connect via [url] anymore.

View 10 Replies View RelatedMorning All, I have a RHEL 4 box with a broken GNOME package. It boots to TWM. I have looked at some of the posts that recommend looking at config files etc. No .xinitrc file found. Cannot "exec gnome-session" , cannot find file. No choice at login screen. Some Gnome files are on the machine. How do download and re-install the entire Gnome-Desktop package?
View 5 Replies View RelatedJust setup 5.5 as Server-GUI installation last night. Ran latest updates today; it requested a restart; logged in to console; GUI desktop all looked normal at first, except that the panels on top and bottom are empty, except for the menu "Applications Places System" items (upper left) are there, but non-functional. The desktop icons for "Computer, Home, Trash" are functional. Update as I am writing this: The menu header items are now GONE as well, but icons still work (but don't help me).
Problem is, I don't have access to any apps that will allow me to reboot the machine with access to "Shutdown/Restart". If I hit the reset button, will it be OK? Or will it blow up like a Windows machine? Luckily I can reinstall if necessary, but the update thing might crash me again. All was fine before applying updates. Anybody having problems with the latest updates?
I'm curious, I believe that one of the ways that OSX make the GUI experience of *nix more 'snappy' was to ditch X and run the window manager more directly on the hardware.
If I'm looking to run Linux on a desktop, and have no interest in sending Windows to other machines on the network, can I run KDE or Gnome with no 'X' to eliminate that ever-so-slight lag with the window manager experience.
I guess basically what I'm asking is is there an equivalent of quartz for Linux?
I installed server 10.10, but it has the wrong keyboard layout. Can i change it to swedish via ssh, because the keyboard preferences wont start via the vnc?
View 1 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 10.04 - Gnome Termainal - BASH pressing cursor keys in certain users produces garbage. For example:
pressing up arrow produces: ^[[A
pressing down arrow produces: ^[[B
pressing right arrow produces: ^[[C
pressing left arrow produces: ^[[D
Naturally, I'd like my bash history instead of this. For root and my main user I have no problems. I have a few system users (who don't have a standard home directory) and this seems to occur with those users. For example, my amandabackups user has a home directory of /var/lib/amanda.
