A member suggested I install Samba (to be able to print to a Windows computer's printer).
I added Samba clients and support files using Add/Remove Software.
I rebooted, and found that the Printers choice in System/Administration had disappeared.
Could someone please suggest how I can get the Printers choice back? maybe a Terminal command to run the Printers config app so I can add a network printer?
I have a friend who just recently got an old computer from a college. The college had been shut down for maybe 6 months and decided to sell all their equipment computer ETC. In that amount of time the college had forgotten the administrator passwords for all the computers. Therefore the computer can not be updated or upgraded to the latest version of Ubuntu.Is there anyway possible to get the administrator password so that I may update upgrade and install new necessary components for the computer?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been using Kubuntu 9.10 for several months now. For most of that time, I configured and used with no problem several network printers.. a HP LaserJet 3015 at home connected to a Windows machine, and a Xerox Phaser 8560 at my coworking space connected directly to a router.
However, several weeks ago I was at the coworking space, requested a print from my web browser, and in the printer selection dialog, observed the list of printers expanding... some sort of autodetection of network printers was occuring, and multiple instances of the same printer were being offered, with slightly different names. Printing to these devices did not work.
Now, after a reboot, there are NO network printers available no matter what network I'm connected to. When I use the Kubuntu printer configuration tool and try to set up a new printer, it asks me to "Select a connection" to which the only option it gives me is "Other". When I put in an address for the printer it just cycles endlessly, never finding anything.
Is there a system admin tool for RHEL on montioring and logging system memory used and released that can dump to a log file?I'm having an issue with memory not being released when an application is closed. I need to have a tool monitor and log so I can troubleshoot to verify that it's an application not the OS.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a shared printer on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine, and it cannot be seen by other computers (macbook, pc) on the network. I have the printer shared, but it is not a member of the 'Shared Printers' group. When I add it to the 'Shared Printers' group, it stays there until I close the 'Printing' application GUI. Then, when I re-open 'Printing,' it is no longer in that group. I think this is why I can't see it on the network, due to the wording of the option in Server Settings to 'Publish shared printers connected to this system.'
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 2TB USB drive which I use as a backup device - I dump two filesystems onto it, totalling around 1TB. However, doing the dump trashes my F11 system, making it basically unusable, not only during the dump but also afterwards. I have 8GB of RAM, all of which is needed and normally in use, but when dumping, the system starts hogging huge amounts of it as buffer space - up to 1GB of RAM is reported to be allocated. And rather than using free memory for buffer space, it seems to aggressively swap processes out to get it. The system tends to melt down as a result, and just switching virtual desktops can take 5 minutes.
But after the dumps finish, the problems continue - the system is currently trying to keep around 700-800MB free, and continually swapping out processes to do so, even after the buffer space in use has gone back to about 100MB. This seems like strange behaviour for a fairly common type of activity. Presumably a lot of the buffer space is used to store what is being read from the filesystem (which will never be needed again), and some is used to cache the writes to the USB drive which is slower than the internal hard drives.
I have spent a lot of time trying changes to some of the kernel parameters, after reading articles about them. Of all the ones I've tried, setting vm.dirty_ratio to 1 instead of 5 helps a bit, and setting vm.dirty_background_ratio to 5 instead of 20 makes some improvement I think. Setting vm.swappiness to 0 doesn't seem to help at all.
So my question (at last!) is - how can I back up my filesystems without my system dying? In particular, can I limit the space used for buffers somehow, or turn off buffering for the dump process? And why does dumping result in the system artificially keeping huge amounts of space free afterwards, so I have to reboot to make the system usuable again?
While messing around with file permissions and ownership of /var/www/ i seem to have locked myself out of being able to administer users on my 9.10 system.
when I go to the user administration screen in the icon with the keys is grayed out. with the message "not authorized to make changes". My account seems to have lost admin access. But, I'm the only user on the system.
I presumed I somehow changed my group status from the root group to something else
but, sudo usermod -g root [my name] just returns "no changes made"
All I can do for now is run as the su from the terminal. Is it possible to log into gnome with a root account?
I've been using samba without issue on Fedora 11 (x86_64) and decided to upgrade to F13 on one of my machines. Upon install I installed samba with the command: Code: sudo yum install samba samba-client cifs-utils I can now see the smb.conf file and could probably use samba via command line; but, I would really like to use the GUI to configure samba as I have in the past. The problem is, there is no samba gui. How do I get the samba GUI back under: System->Administration where it usually is?

The back-ups are occurring automatically and appear to be complete; but, I cannot delete old back-up snapshots in the backintime GUI Also with sudo nautilus or as root in terminal with (rmdir) I cannot delete the snapshots. My drive is filling up and rather than uninstalling back in time, I would like to simply delete the unneeded snapshots. How can I delete these files? Is there an rsync file that I should configure to delete these? My expectation of backintime was that it would back-up at the requested frequency and not create complete duplicate copies of the files, but, use symbolic links to unchanged files. How can I verify if this is the case? Does the cron file control this>

The silly thing is that I have 32bit Fedora 11 on it, 32 bit versions of all my installed software...etc., etc. Am I able at this point to salvage anything or is it best to just back up the home directory and then do a reinstall?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using Fedora 12. I am connected by Wi-Fi to a large network with dozens of printers (the network is running CUPS). How can I set up my fedora box to "see" those printers so that "print..." file menu option works? Also, I know the address of the CUPS server; when I go to System->Administration->Printing and I go to Server->Connect I can connect successfully and I can see all the many printers on the network. But I haven't figured out how to print from my favourite programs yet.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm using FC 11 and HP deskjet F2480. the last general update completely upset my printer settings and I can no longer use my printer at all. According to HPlib diagnostics I need to enable publish shared printers which I've dome. But it persists that the printer is not publised.
This is the second time a general update has messed up my printer setting, the time before I managed to fix by reinstalling HPLib. But this time it refuses with the message 'gs (GhostScript - PostScript and PDF language interpreter and previewer)', but I have the latest version of gs already installed.
I have recently replaced an older server with a new Intel Xeon quad-core processor. The old machine was running FC6, the new machine is running FC11 64Bit. The problem that I am having is that printing to networked printers prints 2-3 pages, then waits 8-10 seconds and then prints 2-3 more pages. This repeats until the printout is completed. My first thought is that FC11 (or somewhere between FC6 and FC11) introduced some way to limit activity to devices? The confusing thing to me is that I went from a single CPU to a quad core machine, increased the memory from 1Gb to 3Gb, moved from a 32 bit machine to a 64 bit machine and I am running the same applications... they just run slower now...

But when again it asked to register a user, I didn't registered any user (left all fields blank) and pressed on "next".After a reboot, now its asking to log in but there is no username except the "other" option. When I'm clicking on other option its showing a field to put a Username (I tried to leave it blank, used root,admin,etc etc etc but no luck) then another box is coming and asking for password, its not taking that password which I set as root password.

Also the "apply to all subfolders and files" doesn't work. Also trying to set the SELinux rule to "userspace" doesn't do anything else. Basically i was trying to do just that transfer my $home folder over to fedora but now it's being a bit odd towards me with making everything require root access and not letting me read/write all files and folders within them.

During installation, it asked me to place files and i placed it in /. Now when I log in as single user (only user or other at login screen) and try to change any system files, it said I don't have permission. I can't change anything or access root file. I try chmod function and it said i don't have permission as well.

The dialog pops up, but will not accept my root user name or any other. I tried using lppasswd to create add root, but it just keeps failing. and seems to have gone unsolved in those threads.
I have Apache 2 running (which I can see by surfing to "localhost") and I have DokuWiki callable (which I can see by surfing to "localhost/dokuwiki").
Also, I adjusted the SELINUX context as described by [URL]
Since the DokuWiki installation is totally fresh, I should now either be able to call "localhost/dokuwiki/install.php" to do further adjustments or to call some admin.php by URL or using some button on the local DokuWiki start page.
However, none of the admin scripts is callable by URL, and there's no admin button shown on the DokuWiki start page.
In F11 the administration menu had more things in it IIRC. Seems that in F12 a lot of tools are missing.Specifically the SELinux config tool is missing, but getting the rest of the menu back would be nice. I can't remember what it had but I'm sure I'll need them at some point.
