I have a service I've made an init script for, and it's added to chkconfig, which shows it "on" in all the correct runlevels. When I start or stop this service using the "service" command all is fine, but it does not start on it's own at bootup. I am currently at a loss to determine why it is not starting. Here is the script:
#!/bin/bash
# chkconfig: 2345 95 10
# description: Start or stop home automation
#

I consider myself a linux noob. The thing about this is, I have played around with various distros of linux over many years. Eventually I get frustrated at how ridiculous something as simple as text editing can be. I'm having a problem starting mysql. I have already ran the install script afer downloading mysql community server from yast.
what I need to do to start the server. I tried to issue rcmysql start, but it says "The absolute path to 'rcmysql' is 'usr/sbin/rcmysql' so running it may require superuser privileges. So i say SUDO rcmysql, enter password and again same message.

I recently installed an Ubuntu 10.04LTS server. I have zabbix-server on that machine, and I noticed that after reboot it won't start. Probabily, the mix of upstart and old init.d scripts result in zabbix starting when mysql is not active yet, in fact in zabbix-server.log I see it cannot reach db. How can I make sure zabbix-server waits for mysql?

I think this goes here, but I'm not sure. I decided that XAMPP had been troublesome enough. MySQL never worked. So I decided to instal the LAMP stack offered by YaST. I went about installing it thinking that it would all work. But it seems that I was wrong. So I try to start mysql, and here's what I get:

Recently after upgrading my kernel (via /repositories/Base:/Kernel/standard) I have had issues with the network not starting properly on bootup. The kernel is 100% SUSE-patched and behaves perfectly outside of that one issue. To get the network to "start" (DHCP issued, eth0 brought up) I have to 'rcnetwork start' in a shell. I've checked to make sure my config is right in both ifcfg-eth0 and 'config' for /etc/sysconfig/network, but nothing affects the outcome.
How do I get the boot scripts to bring up eth0 and issue a DHCP on startup?
Here's the output of 'rcnetwork start -o debug fake':

My mysql server won't start on my machine. It simply fails with no errors.
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql restart
* Stopping MySQL database server mysqld [ OK ]
* Starting MySQL database server mysqld [fail]
When I run cat /var/log/mysql.err the file is empty, thinking this might be a permissions issue
I tried chowning to a mysql user. Here's the current permissions.
Code:
ls -alh /var/log/mysql*

I have MySQL installed on my Kubuntu 10.04 desktop machine which I use for developing web applications.First, all worked fine. But then I wanted to synchronize the database with the MySQL database on my laptop, so I had to allow connections from the LAN interface. So I addedCode:bind-address =192.168.0.100to /etc/mysql/my.cnf. This worked and the synchronization was performed. I want to do this on a regular basis so I would like to keep that line in there. The problem now is that MySQL does not start on system boot. When I start up, mysql simply is not started. There are no errors in /var/log/mysql/mysql.err or /var/log/mysql.err; these files remain empty. When I try to start it using 'sudo start mysql' I get the same result. The 'start mysql' shows up in 'ps aux', but the mysql process itself does not. Now, I found out that when I run
Code:
sudo -u mysql mysqld
The mysqld daemon does start, and the server works fine. To make matters even more strange, if I kill this

i installed mysql 5.1, the workbench and glassfish along with netbeans for an application I plan to build using the java EE. Glassfish is on local host 8080 and when I installed mysql after that, trying to start mysql from command prompt or even connecting through the workbench gives me error. for example going through the terminal and just typing mysql gives me: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) what should I do so both servers can run at the same time when deploying my application? on windows this is all handled for me. but apparently thats not the case on ubuntu

I had a hard drive failure and have recovered (rsync) my backup root filesystem onto a new drive. This all seems to be fine, except that at least two services no longer start: mysql and apache2.I can start successfully both through
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 start
although mysql throws a warning about Upstart. Neither start automatically. My system is Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS x86_64. Part of my reolution actions has involved a kernel update to 2.6.32-27-generic.I have tried to resolve the mysql issue first:
Code:
sudo update-rc.d -f mysql remove
sudo update-rc.d mysql defaults
Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge mysql-server
sudo apt-get install mysql-server
adding them /etc/init.d/... start commands to /etc/init.d/rc.local script and to a session startup script
checking the services are in rcX.d (using bum and sysv-rc-conf) Ensuring there's a .conf file in /etc/init (which there is).I can't see anything in syslog which would suggest if the system has tried to start these but failed, but then I may be looking in the wrong place. I think they're not starting at all. I wonder if it's something to do with the restore, perhaps symlinks?

Click the 'Ping' button to see if there is a networking problem. I press the ping button, and it seems to connect.

I've been attempting to set up a LAMP for local web development, which meant installing mysql-server. But now have a problem when trying to run mysql, I get:-
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
When trying to downgrade mysql-server I saw that there are dependency problems between the various modules (but can't recall which). But whichever route I truied the results are always the same.
Thought about trying XAMPP but I note that even has it's problems, is there any way I can get a lamp set up on FC14, or must I give it up as a bad job.
Howver, just been trying to again to fix the problems with downgrading mysql and get:-
Error: Package: mysql-server-5.1.55-1.fc14.i686 (@updates)
Requires: mysql(x86-32) = 5.1.55-1.fc14
Removing: mysql-5.1.55-1.fc14.i686 (@updates)
mysql(x86-32) = 5.1.55-1.fc14

How can I really, really remove everything related to mysql / mysql-server. I read and tried all kinds of things, but on every reinstall there is still old mysql stuff there, for example an existing password. Even resetting the password does not help.
Reason of removal: it looks like the mysql setup is really corrupt, so I want to remove, and then do a fresh install. Running Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit
sander@R540:~$ sudo apt-get purge mysql-server

Building dependency tree

I installed mediawiki the other day and went with the default innodb option. However a week later something went wrong. And since I have scripts that nightly backup /var/ I just copied the backup of /var/lib/mysql/wikidb/ (as I've done with MyISAM). Then when I connect the wikidb database. I can see the tables (via "show tables"), but when I do any query with them (check table X, select * from X) I get:
Code:
Table 'wikidb.X' doesn't exist I've since read that can can't just copy the database directory like MyISAM, and there appears to be no way that I can find to restore or fix Innodb, without a dump of the data. And I never got a chance to do a mysqldump of the data. So has anybody got any idea how I can at least view the "page" table from the files I've backed up in /var/lib/mysql/wikidb/ ?

I am using CentOS5 and installed the MySQL for server during the installation. I can set up and use MySQL databases. But I cannot make it startup everytime the server restarts. And quite a lot of methods need this folder "support-files/mysql.server", while my set up cannot find this. I am wondering if my installation of the MySQL for server is complete or not.

I seem to have the following problem with Ubuntu. I have two PATA drives in my server. The OS is loaded on the first drive which is the master and the server functions fine. This is what I want to do is to have two 120 gig drives in the system and mirror them. When I put the second drive in set to be a slave the bios see's both drives. After the bios shows what is in the system it hangs with the cursor in the upper left hand corner and will not boot beyond that point. If I unplug that second drive it will boot up with no issues.
