I have set up a dedicated server running Ubuntu Server Edition. I have apache2 installed and running great. I wish to let friends and family host their individiual websites on it, but I'm running into a bit of a dillema. It seems that my server automatically redirects them to my home page and not theirs.

To my great surprise and delight, I can access toystory.movie.edu in a browser from another PC on the LAN (as long as I add 192.168.140.25 to the DNS servers). Encouraged by this victory, I decided to try to set up another subdomain at [URL].
This kind of worked but not completely. Interestingly, I can get to both [URL] and [URL] on my server, but on my PC, I can only get to [URL] not [URL]. Here is my db.movie.edu:

I run my own DNS servers and host my own domains. I'd like to host a few subdomains of one of my domains on a server with a dynamic IP. Is there a way to do this? I *believe* that I can host one subdomain by using a CNAME record and a dynamic DNS service.

When I first encountered this problem, I though it would be a simple solution, but i must just be missing something obvious.i have a few name based hosts configured in apache.when i go to "www.adomainname.com" i get the first website on this list, not "adomainname.com", as i would like. Just googled to find some ideas about installing ypserv and ypbind and portmapper. We did all that and also started them successfully. But now the clients are not able to join to the NIS domain . The error log states "YP_DOMAIN NOT BOUND".
I guess we have not entered the /etc/yp.conf, /etc/hosts files properly. Please let us know the detailed steps to setup a NIS server .
Also, please let us know what entries should go into the different /etc/<file_names>? What is meant by HOSTNAME in the /etc/hosts file?
Is there any other files which need to be changed? Are we missing any steps?

I'm doing development on a site, let's call it mysite.com. mysite.com and www.mysite.com works fine, but proxy.mysite.com and dev.mysite.com point to the LAMP stack running on my computer. Pinging mysite.com gives me:

If it is ftpsync, please provide me some best ways of doing it. I tried ftpsync mirroring but that was not getting properly working due to insufficient I want this mirror to be accessible in my FAI setup so that I can start the installation on multiple machines and start the updates and package installation to be done from the same local mirror.

I have a system set up as a DMZ which works great for accessing SSH and other various services. I have a dyndns account that points to my public IP and allows me to access my DMZ box from around the world. I would like to make a subdomain of my current dyndns account and point it to HostB so that it can host a webserver on it, and have another subdomain point to HostC with a separate webserver on it. each would have SSH, FTP, Etc and have to not conflict with one another behind one IP. I don't even know if it is possible, but it seems like if there is a request for dev.host.homelinux.com that packet would have to hit [URL]and could be iptable'd to be routed to the appropriate local machine somehow.
I work as webdeveloper and I and my co-workers have one rule - if we are done with any project, we comment them with underline at the end of the directory name. For example we have domain 'devel.domain.com' and our projects are located on projectname.devel.domain.com' . Commented project looks like thisAnd here is the problem. I can not acces subdomains ended with underline. It works last time in 9.10 (i think), but since 10.04 gives me the browser only SERVER NOT FOUND. We are using this comment-method for 7 years without problems. Why is this problem in last two editions of Ubuntu?note: there is no problem with accessing ended projects under windows or osx.

I use ns1 and ns2 to point my other domains to the DNS server I host, which then manages what happens.
Anyway, what I would like to do is enable the DNS server to manage the subdomains on my main host. For example, if the domain was example.com and I use admin.example.com in the DNS server, it will not follow through unless I set the cname up, whereas my others will. I have a load balancer with 2 web servers behind it. The web servers rsync with cloud storage to update their apache directories 1 time every hour. Apache is just running php pages that pull/push data to a DB so they dont need to be updated that often. However I need to figure out how to implement a Master/Master MySQL setup to have my web servers point to for the PHP stuff. I need to implement it without having a single point of failure. The Load balancers are useless for failover as they only detect availability based on Ping request. So putting a master/master setup behind a Load Balancer is out. what is the best way to setup the master/master mysql in a HA setup without the use of a load balancer provided by the host?

I noticed that if from any bill's SO machine i copy a file (for example a vob file of 1gb, or a lot of doc and pdf files) in the samba server, while the copy is in progress if in another windows I browse other folders shared in Samba, the copy process stops and say ' the name in the network is no more available( or something like this). It seems that samba pay attention on the fact that a user is browsing the share and doing so it seems that Samba forget that in one of its share there was a copy in progress, very annoing. A file server cannot do that, in this way is useless.

I got to the part was I was about to write the applet code that would send HTTP requests to my CGI scripts. But I read some paragraphs in a book praising Java servlets as better that CGI because they are easier to use and give much better performance server side. My server load isn't very big, though, and I was wondering if it would be worth taking the time to learn about Java servlets and how to set up the server side configuration on my Fedora web server.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a small home-office network. On that network I have two linux computers, one is a client the other a server.
On the server I have NFS Server setup and mount some NFS exports on the client computer.
On the server I have the firewall on and here it becomes a little tricky.
Since both the server and the client connect to the router the interface (eth1) is theoretically both an internal & external zone.
The router is commercial grade and therefore has a good firewall on it which is also setup. Therefore the firewall on the server is really more of a backup than a necessity. But that's fine, and by having the server's firewall on 'fail2ban' is able to work which I like to have working so I don't want to just turn off the server firewall even though I have good security from the router.
However, when I turn on the server's firewall, the client computer cannot see the NFS server when scanning for server -- done by: clicking on "Choose" next to "NFS Server Hostname" when adding an NFS share in the NFS Client in YaST. Clearly something is being blocked even though I have both "NFS Client" and "NFS Server Service" allowed in the server firewall. The Firewall config. files for these are below.
The Firewall configuration is pretty much "out of the box". That is I have the services I need opened up for the external zone, the other zones are left at their default which means the internal zone, although not used (i.e.: attached to any interface), is completely open.
The perfect solution I guess would be to setup my client computer to connect through a different NIC (perhaps eth0), make that the "Internal Zone" and therefore allow all traffic through to it while still blocking the server from the external zone. However, I cannot make that physical change to my network for now so I am looking for an in between (non-perfect) solution.
In this case I am guessing that means opening up extra NFS ports to the external zone so I have full NFS functionality. I don't mind this because like I said, the router firewall is the main line of defense anyway.
So, given all of the above could someone tell me what I would need to additionally open up in the server firewall to make the NFS server detection work on the client while the firewall was on. Or, if you have a cleverer/better solution without me changing my physical network that would be great.
Hopefully I have written this in enough detail and clearly enough so that all the parameters are clear but if not, feel free to ask me what you like and I'll try to make it clear.
