Ubuntu Servers :: Configuring 10.10 Server In VMware ?

Feb 17, 2011

I have attempted to set up ubuntu server 10.10 on my home network. I only have one computer and access to windows is a must for me, so what I have been doing is installing the server via VMware as a virtual server. Now, I have been able to successfully set up a server that works on the LAN, but for some reason I have been unable to get access to the server via the external ip address.

I will list all known information about my network, host computer and VMware.

I'm currently using VMware Workstation. For the virtual machine I have installed, I have allocated 500 GB of space to a partition on my 2 TB external hard drive. The network is currently set to NAT, but I would much prefer to Bridge the network so that the guest would be assigned a unique LAN address.

The host computer is a laptop. It is connected to the internet through a wireless router. I can successfully host a teamspeak server that accepts incoming traffic from the internet. The operating system that is installed is Windows Vista.

The network is set up as follows:

The host's LAN address is 192.168.1.50 and is connect to the Router which has an address of 192.168.1.1. I am using a Netgear WNDR3300v1 wireless router. The webserver itself would likely have the IP 192.168.1.2 in the circumstance that the network was bridged for the virtual machine. So the WAN Interface would be the modem my company has provided which has assiged the external IP 24.113.92.228. The modem is a cable modem, the brand is a motorola surfboard.

Debian :: Configuring Lenny To Use DHCP?

Jan 4, 2010

I am working with a bare bones lenny that connects fine to an ADSL router using wireless ethernet and a fixed IP. I am trying to reconfigure to use DHCP but it isn't happening.

I'm using the following page as a reference... An introduction to Debian networking setup

ok I modified my /etc/network/interfaces file as follows...

# The primary network interface
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
dpkg --get-selections shows I have the following installed
dhcp3-client install
dhcp-common install

as I understand, that is all that is needed. However when I try to ping the router I get the error network unreachable. ifconfig does not have an inet addr. in the wlan0 section. dmesg | grep dhcp shows nothing at all.

General :: Vmware Server 2.0.2 Installation On 12 - Making Sure Services For VMware Server Are Stopped

May 19, 2010

I have installed fc12 on my core2due machine, and I have installed the vmware server on it, its rpm is installed successfully with out any error, after that a message is displayed

The installation of VMware Server 2.0.2 for Linux completed successfully. You can decide to remove this software from your system at any time by invoking the following command: "rpm -e VMware-server".

Before running VMware Server for the first time, you need to configure it for your running kernel by invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl".

I tried this command and find the this message

[Akram@localhost Downloads]$ su -c "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl" Password: Making sure services for VMware Server are stopped.

None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] yes

Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.4.2", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3" anyway? [no] yes

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?[/usr/src/linux/include]

Now it asks me in last lines that "What is the location of Directory of C header files that match your running kernal?"

Ubuntu Networking :: DHCP Server No Longer Responses To DHCP Requests - Can't Ping Gateway

Oct 22, 2010

Back in April I set up a Ubuntu DHCP server and a multiple VLAN network [URL] to migrate our various servers, workstations, etc off the 192.168.1.1 /24 network that everything was on because we where running out of address space. I built out the new network and everything worked great except our AD server would never get an IP address from the DHCP server (static reservation) and even if I set the IP statically on the AD server it couldn't ping the gateway and noone could log in. After several attempts to resolve this, including bringing in outside help, we where never able to figure out what the problem was.

Now 6 months later I have time to revisit the issue without effecting the live network. I used Acronis and imaged the AD server last Friday, cloned it on to another box with the same hardware, and put it up on the new network that's been sitting unused for the last 6 months. Today when I statically set the IP on the AD server (which is what I want) it connects and I can ping it's gateway 192.168.1.1 and all the way across vlans to a test sales agent workstation at 192.168.8.xxx on vlan 800 but only if I statically assign the agents station an IP address. When I try to get an IP address via DHCP it fails as destination unreachable. Nothing has changed in the last 6 months on the DHCP server but now it for some reason can't ping its default gateway 192.168.1.1. All of the config files are the same as they where left from the post linked above aside from the vlan id's used where changed from 1's to 100's (i.e. vlan 3 is now vlan 300) /etc/network/interfaces

Code:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto vlan100
iface vlan100 inet static

[code]....

why it can't reach the gateway, when I do a tcpdump I can see the DHCP requests come in on eth0 but the server never responds and I'm pretty sure its because it isn't "seeing" them since it thinks there isn't a network connection but I don't know how to trouble shoot to find out where the problem lies.

Networking :: Configure A (openSUSE) Client To Dhcp To EBox DHCP Server - Lease An IP Address

Mar 25, 2010

I am puzzled with trying to configure a linux (openSUSE) client to dhcp to eBox DHCP server. I am using dhclient to lease an IP address with dhclient eth0 -s 10.45.48.108 and get a response

openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 10.45.48.108 port 67 interval 4
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPOFFER from 10.45.48.108
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 10.45.48.108 port 67
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: send_packet: Network is unreachable
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: send_packet: please consult README file regarding broadcast address.

The server reports eBox141 dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:0c:29:3e:57:a3 (openSUSE11232CL1.domain.net) via eth0
eBox141 dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 10.45.200.2 to 00:0c:29:3e:57:a3 (openSUSE11232CL1.domain.net) via eth0

I interpret this as the server receives the request and the client accepting it but the lease does not last long and the connection breaks. what this could be and why the connection breaks? Or my undestanding is totally wrong on how it works and should work? And BTW, where is that README file that's referenced in the message I receive on the client?

Ubuntu Servers :: DHCP Server And DHCP Client Simultaneously?

Aug 4, 2010

I have an embedded device for which I've created an html configuration page. This page allows you to set static IPs, dhcp, and can scan for wireless devices. My problem is that in order to access the device it requires that it runs as a dhcp server otherwise people are not assigned an IP and so can not access the embedded devices static IP. (This config page is for the laymen and so they are not the type who are able to set up their own static IPs). One of the potential options is to have the device connect to the network on eth0 acting as a dhcp client. However this prevents me from running a dhcp server. One solution I can think of is running a dhcp server only if it doesn't detect another dhcp server running on the network.

Fedora :: Script For Configuring ClamAV Server?

Dec 17, 2009

In short, I've written a bash script (available from github) for configuring and removing instances of clamav-server on Fedora (clamd). It lets you create and remove individual instances with a specific user and port (if you specify them) and will install the required packages if not already present on the system and remove them if you want to. In long, we use Clam AntiVirus as our antivirus protection for Digital Preservation Recorder and talk to it over the default port, 3310 (clamd). Installing the clamav-server package under Fedora however, doesn't actually set up an instance. In fact, it doesn't copy any system configuration files into place at all. This means that the system is left without any working ClamAV server out of the box.

Under Fedora, ClamAV server is configured on a per user basis. This is actually quite important (unless you run as root) because the daemon needs at minimum read access (and we've found also write) on the files/directory being passed for scanning. The instructions on how to configure it are located under /usr/share/doc/clamav-server-[version]/ but I have taken these instructions and written a bash script to configure all of this for you. The script is available from github. It can create or remove an individual instance of clamav-server using a specific username and/or port (if you want to specify them, else it defaults to clamav on port 3310). The script will also install any required packages, if you don't already have them on the system. You also have the option of removing the required packages when you remove an instance. The script now also configures freshclam for you (the definitions updater), which needs to run as your user too.
