Server :: Postfix Authentication Error "Technical Details Of Permanent Failure"
May 1, 2011
I setup Postfix on my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server but I am getting an error saying: Code: Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 530 530 SMTP authentication is required. (state 14).

On Ubuntu server 10.10, with a relay smtp server with authentication via postfix; I keep getting 535: Incorrect authentication data. I'm sure my username and password is correct. Heres how I set up postfix: I created a file called smarthosts.conf in my /etc/postfix/ directory that contains the following:

my server uses plain text authentication on port 25. I would like to use security like SSL, but this particular server is unsecured.

I cannot get either sendmail or postfix to send a 220 response, nor respond with details. See below for sample telnet output. Details: I have a server that requires email, but only for light use. I'm definitely not an expert, but I have set up a sendmail configuration on a previous server. I tried to configure sendmail first and then postfix later, when I couldn't get sendmail working. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is, but I have a feeling the following might yield some important information. Note: this is the result for Postfix, but virtually the same thing happened with sendmail, too. That is, initially the telnet connection would close immediately. Afterwords, I could connect a second time but then it never responded with a 220 banner nor any 250's.

i have been running Ubuntu for about 3 days now, finally getting all my files moved back to the drive and what have you.I came from running windows, and an Android phone with full su access, and done up all custom-like..I am loving the speed, etc. great experience so far. BUT: the headphone port on my laptop is broken, and so I run [ran] and external soundcard, a Creative X-fi 5.1 USB SC. I have found linux drivers for this unit, and am trying to install. I have googled the crap out of how to do this, yet am getting stuck.
Here is where I'm getting stuck. I have extracted the package, entered into the sub folder, and am trying to run the Make install:
...laptop:/tmp/xfi-0.0.0.0$ cd ./xfi
...laptop:/tmp/xfi-0.0.0.0/xfi$ su -c "make install"
Password:
su: Authentication failure
...laptop:/tmp/xfi-0.0.0.0/xfi$
what in heck do i type at password... have I NOT done something, am I doing something wrong.... it does not accept my normal password, so I am lost.

OS=FC14 x86_64
DM=Gnome
I've installed pure-ftp, and the firewall is open on port 21, the router has port forwarding.
I can connect to this machine, from my smart-phone and a laptop using its IP Address 77.xx.xx.xxx
I'm getting user OK but its not accepting my password or one I just made on another account
This is whats happening:-
What layer of extra security is stopping this working, as the guy attempting access is trying to send a file to big to attach to an e-mail.

I was having a problem with the keyring asking me for a password after I changed my user password. I googled it and found that since the password changed, I will get asked for the keyring password until I delete ~/.gnome2/keyrings/login.keyring. What happened was that I wasn't paying attention that you had to generate a new keyring password before rebooting.
Now, whenever I try to login via gdm, I get this message: error initiating conversation with authentication system - general failure
How do I get it working again? I can still login from the terminal.

I'm using postfix with unix accounts for a while now and I just realized today that SASL authentication, instead of working only with the USERNAME, it also works if the username is followed by ANYDOMAIN.COM
So, let's say I have the following UNIX users: tim, mike, john. If I set the Outgoing Username:[URL]..(where whatever.com can be any name you can think of) IT WORKS, even though it shouldn't, it should only work with tim, mike and john without any domain name. Does anyone know what might cause this and what's the workaround to this problem?

I am running the following on CentOS 5.5 (Final)
dovecot 1.0.7
saslauthd 2.1.22
When I send an email via TLS I see the following log entries.
Code:
Oct 14 11:53:06 ns2 postfix/smtpd[11372]: connect from unknown[172.16.1.159]
Oct 14 11:53:06 ns2 postfix/smtpd[11372]: setting up TLS connection from unknown[172.16.1.159]
[Code]....
What I'm really curious about is there is an intial TLS connection with a 256 bit cipher, but then.. The last entry states "sasl_method=PLAIN" - so surely this is not encrypted? Or am I misunderstanding how it works?

I am re setting up a server of mine running red hat enterprise Linux server 6 and I had all of this working befor but for some reason I had troubles getting sasl to work and now when I login my smtp server I get an error stating that my username or password is incorrect though I am sure I am entering both correctly. Would anyone know what could be happening? I have been spending days on the web looking for the solution and only went from sasl not working when started as a service to this. For some reason I can't use Pam with saslauthd and had to use shadow instead of which from what I hear I get to use better methods of secure authentication with smtp

I configured POSTFIX with DOVECOT, LDAP & Squirrel mail on RHEL 5.5. Iam able to login using LDAP authentication. Now i want to deliver mails locally using LDAP. I configured to query LDAP using transport lookup table (ie.transport_maps=ldap:ldaptransport). it shows the following errors:
warning:dict_ldap_lookup:ldaptransport : search base not found-no such object..
Temporary lookup failure.
ldaptransport Configuration:
server_host=hostname of server
[code]....
(But same search_base is configure in Dovecot, it is authenticating) I have searched in net, they are telling that some ASCII encoding problem in postfix to LDAP.

I've been trying to set up my printer that I'm sharing through a desktop running Windows 7 and am having trouble getting the authentication details to stay saved, or even work, for that matter.
No matter whether or not I tell the New Printer program to remember my authentication details, it doesn't. If I tell it to prompt me if it needs details, I get no prompt. So, in order for me to print a document, I have to tell it to print, then go into the print queue and authenticate it from there.
1. IIs there a way, either manually or through GUI, to either save my authentication details or just have it prompt me upon printing to save me from going into the print queue?
2. This isn't exactly on-topic, but it came up while I tried to set up the printer. Has anyone else had their SMB URI come up incorrectly with the spaces incorrectly rendered as "20" instead of "%20:?

I need to enter credentials for a system wide proxy, on a fresh install of Kubuntu 10.04. Everything hunky dory, but: Network Settings->Proxy->Authorization has 'username:' and 'password' grayed out all the time; even at 'Manually specify ...'. The only 'alternative' (not to chose from) is 'Prompt as needed'. But I don't get any prompt, and so I'm out of luck. To me, this looks like a bug. Because one should be able to enter a username and a password there, for good.

Tried to make the /etc/pam.d/gdm mod to auto-auth keyring. Now when I boot up it says "error initiating conversation with authentication system - general failure" preventing me from logging in.
So I read that I can enter recovery mode by pressing Esc on boot up to boot to a root shell. However no amount of button mashing Esc on boot up seems to have any effect, always bringing me to the graphical login. I could boot to a liveUSB but this has all started when I got to work this morning, and don't have a USB key handy, and I'd like to get this sorted so I can do some work today!
And why does the /etc/pam.d/gdm tweak seem to be causing so many issues (googling reveals the technique has a lot of other users finding the same problem as me, however they seem to be able to get to recovery mode)?
EDIT: If I hold down or mash Esc fast enough, the computer will beep at me once or twice, but nothing changes on screen
EDIT 2: Ok found out that holding SHIFT is the new way of doing things, reverted pam.d/gdm to the backup and things are back to normal!

I have been having problems with filesystem corruption on my eeepc 1000H for a long time now. I have tried using different filesystems, kernels and distributions (arch, slackware) to no effect. I am starting to grow suspicious that this problem lies somewhere else, as I haven't seen anyone else having similar problems in such a variety of scenarios.
I have tried testing my ram using memtest86+, didn't come up with anything after a full run through. I also have tried using e2fsck -c to check for bad blocks, it finds none. I had a go at using smartctl but wasn't really sure what I was doing. I did a long test and it came up with nothing anyway.
This problem is in addition to the problems I've been having with my intel graphics chip and KMS. A lot of the time there are lockups when booting into X, which can only be gotten out of by a hard reset. This is sometimes what causes the original filesystem errors. I've stopped messing around with KMS for now to eliminate this but my current system in unbootable. I'm guessing my disk is wrecked but have as yet seen no definitive proof. Can anyone recommend anything that I should do?
I am currently on ext4 with a custom kernel 2.6.33-rc6 (the stock kernel shipping with slackware does not have the elantech extension for psmouse included). When I was using arch, I was just using the stock kernels.

Then i tried to login as root from from CLI (by default Fedora does not support root login to GUI?) and i was able to login.....
Then it said "System powering down in one minute"............. i didnt understand why that happened.....! but it didnt power down in one minute...
I tried changing my user passwd...still no change.....

I am running Ubuntu 11.04 which I like very much (except for Unity - so I am using Ubuntu Classic).
Whenever I try to use "su - " I get Password Authentication Failure. I have checked Caps Lock (obviously) and have also tried resetting the password using "passwd" - but with no success.
If I use "sudo ...." with a command the password is accepted.
I have the same software installed on two computers but the problem only occurs on one - the other is OK!

su doesn't work in terminal. i found one (click), and tried it, but it didn't fix it. Everything else works. Sudo, Software manager, synaptic package manager... I know i'm putting the right password in. Heres a picture, ignore everything except the last 4 lines.
Everything before it was me trying a proposed fix in the thread mentioned above.
Quote:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
I've tried changing my password as well. I got the same error. Also, "sudo su" works fine. I'm not sure if theres a difference as i'm new to ubuntu....linux in general. Can you explain the difference between sudo and su, and sudo su? Also, can you explain what any commands you need me to do are? that way, i'm not just leaching.i'm trying to do is install Java!

I think I am having a problem due to an NFS server file size limit. Is it possible I am missing a parameter on the RHEL NFS setup to handle large files? I am running an NFS server on a RHEL 5.1 machine and the HP-UX 11.0 machine does an NFS mount to that file system. The HP-UX executes a program that resides on the HP-UX machine to process a large 35 GB data file that resides on the NFS server machine. The program on the HP-UX can only read/process the first portion of the file until an "RPC: Authentication error" is returned multiple times until the program prematurely decides that it has reached the end of file.
I tried recompiling the same program to run on the RHEL 5.1 NFS server to access the 35 GB file locally (on the NFS server instead on HP-UX) and the program completed successfully, processing the whole file (about 7 hours of processing) with no "RPC: Authentication error." In addition, I have been running the nfs mount with the same machines for quite some time, but not with such large files sizes.
