Im using FEDORA 12 (constantine )....Everything was working fine.....until yesterday when i tried login to my GUI(gdm) it says authentication failure. so i tried logging in from CLI and it didnt worked either...(it didnt say "password incorrect",rather it it simply reset the screen to "login name:",thats weird...right?)
Then i tried to login as root from from CLI (by default Fedora does not support root login to GUI?) and i was able to login.....
Then it said "System powering down in one minute"............. i didnt understand why that happened.....! but it didnt power down in one minute...
I tried changing my user passwd...still no change.....

OS=FC14 x86_64
DM=Gnome
I've installed pure-ftp, and the firewall is open on port 21, the router has port forwarding.
I can connect to this machine, from my smart-phone and a laptop using its IP Address 77.xx.xx.xxx
I'm getting user OK but its not accepting my password or one I just made on another account
This is whats happening:-
What layer of extra security is stopping this working, as the guy attempting access is trying to send a file to big to attach to an e-mail.

I just installed Fedora 12 on HP Pavilion (dual boot with Windows vista). I made it all the way through the installation and created my user account. A few seconds later I got the login screen asking for my password. I enter the password and get "Authentication Failure."
The name that shows up on the login screen is my full name, not the user name that I created. Is that wrong?

I have installed fedora 14 in my computer. I installed some applications from root. I created a user id. I am unable to install my internet (broadband connection) now. every time it shows the error "Authentication failure" "install from root" something like that. How can I switch between user and root. Or how can I login as root again?

I just got Fedora 12, and I used su root to change the bin ownership to my primary developer account. For some reason, though, all subsequent attempts to log in as root have had authentication failure, be it through su or through the startup login screen. This does NOT occur for adminstrator tools such as Groups and Users.

I,ve tried upgrade from F14 to F15 using preupgrade, but I run into serious problem. Preupgrade downloaded all packages without problem and prompt me to reboot. After reboot installation process went ok. It was upgrading cca 1650 packages. But installation hung around package 1600 (almost on end) with message that openjpeg-devel-1.4-6.fc15.i686 cannot be installed and only option to end installer. After reboot I ended up with "kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)". It is still possible to enter grub menu, where I can choose upgrade to F15, but it fails again on that openjpeg-devel package. When I enter terminal after failure, I can see package is downloaded in preupgrade repo (and after moving somewhere else and running upgrade again it I got message that package is missing). Is there any possibility to skip this package installation or only option is fresh reinstall?

I am running Ubuntu 11.04 which I like very much (except for Unity - so I am using Ubuntu Classic).
Whenever I try to use "su - " I get Password Authentication Failure. I have checked Caps Lock (obviously) and have also tried resetting the password using "passwd" - but with no success.
If I use "sudo ...." with a command the password is accepted.
I have the same software installed on two computers but the problem only occurs on one - the other is OK!

su doesn't work in terminal. i found one (click), and tried it, but it didn't fix it. Everything else works. Sudo, Software manager, synaptic package manager... I know i'm putting the right password in. Heres a picture, ignore everything except the last 4 lines.
Everything before it was me trying a proposed fix in the thread mentioned above.
Quote:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
I've tried changing my password as well. I got the same error. Also, "sudo su" works fine. I'm not sure if theres a difference as i'm new to ubuntu....linux in general. Can you explain the difference between sudo and su, and sudo su? Also, can you explain what any commands you need me to do are? that way, i'm not just leaching.i'm trying to do is install Java!
Sysinfo:

i have been running Ubuntu for about 3 days now, finally getting all my files moved back to the drive and what have you.I came from running windows, and an Android phone with full su access, and done up all custom-like..I am loving the speed, etc. great experience so far. BUT: the headphone port on my laptop is broken, and so I run [ran] and external soundcard, a Creative X-fi 5.1 USB SC. I have found linux drivers for this unit, and am trying to install. I have googled the crap out of how to do this, yet am getting stuck.
Here is where I'm getting stuck. I have extracted the package, entered into the sub folder, and am trying to run the Make install:
...laptop:/tmp/xfi-0.0.0.0$ cd ./xfi
...laptop:/tmp/xfi-0.0.0.0/xfi$ su -c "make install"
Password:
su: Authentication failure
...laptop:/tmp/xfi-0.0.0.0/xfi$
what in heck do i type at password... have I NOT done something, am I doing something wrong.... it does not accept my normal password, so I am lost.

I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction. I just did an install and the os is up and running. During install, I set a root password and also set up a regular user account. The only option at login is the regular user acct. Needless to say, the os asks me to provide the root pw for just about everything I need to do.get an authentication failure. (I assume that this is the same as permission). I can find plenty of info on how to restrict access but nothing relevant to my problem. Just to rule out an install problem, I installed the os a 2nd time. I am very sure I have my passwords correct. One other thing to note is that on the 1st install, I used a different pw for root and regular user. On the 2nd, just to keep is as simple as possibl I used the same pw for root and reg user account. I am new to debian, but the distro that I have been using (slackware)

have been experiencing an error (the past few weeks) whenever I try to install a software package using the default installer. Each time I enter the root password it is not accepted and I am unable to get past it and the installation fails.This is the error message that is issued:[PK_TMP_DIR|dir:///var/tmp/TmpDir.mf2zCf] Repository already exists.I am able to enter the root password in a terminal session without any problem along with using the Install Software option in the main menu.

I managed to get Ubuntu installed, however, it just won't let me log in. I perform the net-install, and tell it my user name and password. However, once the install has completed, and the system rebooted, I cannot log in to Ubuntu (on X-screen or TTY). I've tried it twice - once with Karmic Koala Ubuntu installed with GNOME - the other with just CLI and they both fail.

I upgraded from 8.04LTS to 10.04LTS desktop. I can do sudo as root at the terminal, but I can't pass authentication trying to add a user (System->Administration->Users and Groups).
Here is what I got: An error occurred while checking for authorizations: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. You may report this as a bug.

Here is what happens. I type in "su", without the quotes, to switch to root. I enter my password.
Code: jon-Tuxbox:~$ su
Password:
su: Authentication failure
jon-Tuxbox:~$ It fails, and I get kicked back to the command line. I recently fixed the permissions on the shadows file and the su file in the bin directory, and that is what caused this. Before it would give another error. I tried resetting the password for root, but it didn't fix it.

When trying to do an update or upgrade, I get the following:
Running Transaction Warning: RPMDB has been altered since the last yum transaction. Traceback (most recent call last):
[Code]....
I have tried yum clean all, yum clean metadata, rpm --rebuilddb, and even removing /var/cache/yum. yum info and yum list both work fine. Naturally, this yum problem is preventing me from updating my system.

I'm a long time Linux user. Finally got around to upgrading my Fedora 11 system to Fedora 12 by using the 'preupgrade' tool. The upgrade appeared to go well (downloaded packages, rebooted into installer, etc). However, now that the upgrade is complete, I'm unable to boot my system.
Here's my configuration:
/dev/sda (80Gb)
200Mb /boot partition (ext3)
52Gb / partition (ext4 - managed as logical volume)
2Gb swap partition (managed as logical volume)
20Gb /spare partition (ext3 - managed as logical volume) .....
All worked fine under Fedora 11 for the last few months. Grub now presents me with 'Fedora' and 'Windows XP' boot options. The /boot/grub/menu.lst file is essentially the same as it was for Fedora 11, except for the different kernel versions, etc. The boot sequence shows the Fedora bubble (??) and gets about 80% full when the screen goes black and the message displayed is:
No root device found
Boot has failed, sleeping forever
If I boot Windows, all works fine.
Am able to boot using a SystemRescueCD disk. The disks all look okay and I can mount/modify all partitions, etc. The grub menu.lst file read as follows (sorry, typed in, not copied):
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title Fedora (2.6.32.11-99.fc12.i686.PAE)
root (hd0,0) .....
