My cron job is executing the below mysqldump command but it produces an empty sql file. However, when I run from the command line, it works as expected.
Code:
15 6 * * * root mysqldump -uroot -pXXXXXXX mydbname | gzip > /home/dbbackup/db_`/bin/date +\%Y\%m\%d\%H\%M`.sql.gz
I'm on CentOS 5.4 and use "env EDITOR=nano crontab -e" edit my cron (then paste the above command.

I would like to have my backup script that I am writing to create a sql dump of my database and go directly into a tar file. Does anyone know how I could do this with one command?
To be more clear I would like to go from
mysqldump -u xxxx -pXXXXX tablename> currentbackup.sql
tar -czvf backup-XXXXXXXX.tgz currentbackup.sql
rm currentbackup.sql
To a single command somehow. Does anyone know how I could accomplish something like this?

I having been searching for a way to create an empty or blank iso file, so that I can mount it, and have a backup application think it's a blank CD. I am tired of wasting CD's by having the application write a recovery CD, just for me to turn around and export it to an iso image to be stored in a online archive, and then throw away the physical CD.

I have a LAMP website with mysql backend with InnoDb engine for tables.I would like to be able to use mysqldump to take periodic dumps of the database - WITHOUT having to stop the mysql server (i.e. shutting down the website) for the duration of the backup. not even in the mySQL documentation. A lot of mention is made about mysqlhotcopy, but that only works for IMSAM tables - and is therefore of no interest/use to me.Does anyone know if (how?) I can use mysqldump to take a copy/dump of a database that is still being used?.A link to the official documentation would be very useful, since I want to make sure that I get this absolutely right.I am running on Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS

Is it possible to compress the mysqldump output into say db_backup.sql.tgz. Then add that to an existing archive e.g. backup.tgz in one command or on the fly to save space and deleting it?

create a Cron file and script. I've tried reading through my Linux book but I am just lost here. I need to create a Cron file that will perform a Level 0 backup once per month, a Level 2 dump one day per week, and a Level 5 dump every day that neither a level 0 nor a level 2 dump is performed.

I am trying to have the files from /user/directory copy every hour to /backup/user/directory. It would seem that cron or crontab is what I need to use. Looking at previous posts and other documentation only shows how much I don't know. When I type crontab -e I get a blank file I can type into, seemingly using vi as the editor. I have no problem with that but when I type cron -l, I get my text after a message about "Do Not Edit this File". What I am reading just makes no sense, I am not understanding even the most fundamental aspects of cron or crontab. Where I can get the most basic of basic instructions to try to understand this function?

set up incremental backups with crontab. I just discovered that tar is not actually incrementing the tar files. I first created the tar files, then in crontab I have:
Code:
cd /; tar -cpf --incremental --exclude-from=/root/ExcludeFromTar.txt mnt/PATRIOT/bkp/home.tar home
I only just discovered that this creates a file whose filename is "/--incremental". I also tried using tar's -G switch instead of --incremental:

When I converted to OpenSUSE 11.2, and went through YaST HTTP Server Configuration, creating my virtual hosts under the Hosts tab, YaST combinedm all int ile,"/etc/apache2/vhosts.d/ip-based_vhosts.conf".I did google and read, [URL]for further assistance.I'd like each virtual host to have its own file under vhosts.d, and wondering why YaST did not do that. The file /etc/apache2/httpd.conf laid out the file structure, and all vhosts.d/*.conf files are included. Is there a way to tell YaST to create separate files for each vhost, or does the user have to manually do it?

Im using an if statement in the bin ash shell and it isnt working.
Code: if (( 5000 > $available_blocks )) then echo "WARNING Disk space low, "$pct_used" is used" fi
I don't think its a problem with the if. When i use that code it creates a file with name of the value $available_blocks instead of using the '>' sign for comparing the 2 numbers.

/dev/sda2 20641788 8427780 11165368 44% /

I have 44% used. It should be much smaller, under 10%. How do I empty the /tmp file or other file to free up space?

I've done a low level format on them so they're completely empty. When I use them with my windows machines, they're absolutely fine. When I plug them into my Ubuntu machine, there is a hidden directory created called 'RECYCLER' which I'm assuming is for deleted files? However, it also creates a .exe file in this directory called 0x2D9FA278 which has an Icon with an H in it and a comment of 'Facebook Photo' This has the effect of making all the directories on the stick into shortcuts! I googled the file name and it seems to be some sort of Trojan, but I don't understand how it's go into my Ubuntu machine, I've scanned with ClamAV and it finds nothing.

After upgrading to 11.04, I noticed something strange, being that when I want to drag a file or folder from one Nautilus folder window to another which is not visible, I can no longer hold the item over said folder's taskbar button and wait for it to appear. It just shows the + for copy, and when I let go (which I have no choice but to eventually do), it creates a launcher to that item (I assume it's doing that, and not actually copying there, but the + has me unsure).
I've looked in Nautilus's preferences to see if this is some new behaviour that I can revert back to, but could find nothing there.
I'm of course using the Classic desktop with bottom panel being the taskbar. If you know how I can rectify this, please let me know, as the times I would want to create a file or folder launcher without the usual hassle would be rare, but I am constantly dragging stuff from one folder to another, and it would be a real pain to have to line up source and destination folders each time.

I was copying an .avi file to an external hard drive and half way through the copy the drive reset and required remounting. Consequently I have an empty .avi file on the hard drive. I tried to recopy the file and overwrite, but I keep getting 'Could not write to media/harddrive/filename.avi'. I tried to rename to file to be copied but got the same response, I cannot delete the empty file either, as I get an error telling I cannot delete it. I have tried to do this as the user and root with the same result.Any other file I tried to copy onto the external hard drive is fine, just this one zero length file and the file I was trying to copy, the original of the file. I also tried to delete the file on another computer but couldn'tExternal hard drive is a WD elements ntfs, which works great except for this glitch.
