I want to setup a user which should
- only connect to the server with SSH (ex.: no X11 connection).
- cannot change its shell
- cannot do any SU / SUDO command
This user is very similar to a SERVICE user, as I expect him only to run a single program (its shell).
I would like to allow a user to login through SSH but with different permission coming from different ipaddress.
For example, a user "tester" login to SSH through 192.168.1.1 and another user login with the same login id "tester" but from different ip 192.168.1.2.
How do I restrict 192.168.1.2 to only allow for viewing the content in the home directory while giving 192.168.1.1 full access?
Here's the beginning of the issue: I'm running Fedora 12 with httpd and sshd. I want to create a user with a scponly shell for sftp access, but this user should ONLY be able to view /the/http/base/dir and its subdirectories. The user should not be able to see or get into directories above the httpd base. Someone mentioned creating a chroot jail for sshd and binding the httpd base to that dir, but this seems like more work than is necessary for the application I wish. Also mentioned was creating a user, say user1 with a selinux user setting of staff_r. I have read the articles and creating a user of staff_r isn't overly difficult, but how would I make it where staff_r would be restricted to where I want them to be? If I'm not mistaken, that would require changing the context of /the/httpd/base/dir?

I'm running Natty and have made two logins on the system. One for myself and family and one for the kids (teens 14-15yr) to play in without Internet access via Admin "Users and Groups". I have hidden the Internet software icons on their screen amongst others i don't want them to see on the menus. On our screen I use a Firefox addon called "Web Of Trust" that can be configured easily for the kids and another addon called 'Blocksite' that I can selectively use for them and myself etc.
I have found out that they have still been able to get on to the net somehow under their login. Will have to observe again!! In the users settings for the kids the tick box for 'Internet'and 'use modem' access is un-ticked so I presumed that would be enough! Not so!!

View 8 Replies View Related2 of us have been googling all morning trying to find out how we can restrict ftp logins to their own home directories only but nothing we've found so far has worked. We've tweaked sshd_config so that they default to their home directory but they are able to navigate up/across/down to everything. This is a "straight-out-of-the-box" debian 5.0.5 Netinst. Just a basic system with Apache/MySql/PHP/SSH and no desktop.

It needs to be restrictive based on the time of day and the days of the week. I am using the MAC address of the computer to single out the one computer that needs to be blocked. However, this is my first attempt at making any rules with iptables, and I am not sure if I am doing this right. If some one can take a look at this I would greatly appreciate it. This is what I have done so far.
Here is my thinking. Create a new target. Check the MAC address, if it is NOT the offending computer return to the default chain. If it is the offending computer check that we are between the allowed hours and dates and ACCEPT. If we are not within the time/date range then drop the packet.

Is it a good idea to route all traffic through the blocked_access chain? I do run other servers that are accessible from the Internet, so I am not sure how this setup will affect that. I also use shorewall on the router to setup iptables for me. How would I integrate this with shorewall?
I am using squid to block access when he is using the web browser. However, he is still able to play games(World of Warcraft) and the like.
I am using Debian sid, iptable(1.4.6), shorewall(4.4.6), kernel 2.6.32-trunk-686.
I'd like to know if this is common security flaw or normal to open up FTP to the public which is of course protected with password for 3rd party access to maintain our public facing / production website ? If yes, what sort of FTP application to install in your Linux webserver?

The problem being, when I enter syntax: username ALL= /etc/init.d/tomcat5, /usr/local/tomcat/webapps, PASSWD:ALL This gives the user access to start and stop tomcat but also gives user access to start and stop other services within /etc/init.d - such as httpd etc... What is the proper way to give user access to start and stop service, and limiting that power to only one service....
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to get a non-root account on one of our servers to run a script with sudo capability. To that end, I went into the /etc/sudoers file, and added the following syntax:

I restarted the nagios service, and tested the results. The results were the user account still could not run the script due to the user, nagios, not having permission to run the iptables binary.
Is there another step(s) that I need to take in order to get the sudo access available to the user account?
I have a mercurial repository on a secure server, to which I want to grant secure access to an external user.
I added for him a user account and publickey ssh authentication so that now he could push/pull changesets via ssh.
My question is: how can I make this new user account completely disabled from doing anything or accessing any data on the server other than accessing the repository? E.g. he shouldn't even have the possibility to enter an interactive shell session.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI managed to make an old parallel port scanner work in ubuntu 11.04 with SANE. Everything's perfect but one thing: scanner applications work only if they are executed as a root.After further researching, I've found the cause is that only the root has read and write permissions on the device /dev/parport0 which is my parallel port. If I set the right permissions giving sudo chmod a+rw /dev/parport0 I solve my problem, but just untill next reboot... the system resets root only permissions at each restart. I would like to make that change permanent... what can I do?

User1 has root access
user2 has root access, but must not be able to access ctmag (user account)
I know the obvious here is that if user2 can switch to root then it won't work. But i just need to prevent user2 from su - ctmag. A password is set on the account ctmag, but as user2 has root access it switches without a password prompt
Is there anyway i can prevent user2 from switching to ctmag but still have access to root?

Because so much of my time is taken up with Interwebz, I thought to carefully restrict my internet use. It's not prefect, but it's part of a solution.
To date: I have Firefox and the ProCon extension which uses a whitelist of websites I can access. The extension cannot be uninstalled/disabled and I use a long hex password split into 3 parts, two of which my friends have (so I have to ask my friends for the password parts in order to update the whitelist, hence making it socially awkward to fritter away time online).
So far, it has worked a treat and I'm really pleased with it.
However, this is the problem:
I need to restrict web access so *only* Firefox can access the web. That way I cannot use Chrome/Opera, or even (shudder) use wine to run Internet Exploder.
I get the problem to acess root password when i am in user login, means wahen i am in user login and want to install software from terminal then he asked root password, when i supplied root password but he give me login incorrect.

Is there any way I can provide them this access without actually giving them permission to open a terminal on my server? I tried /bin/false and /sbin/nologin already, but /bin/false didn't allow the mount point to be made and /sbin/nologin prevented a login completely (also stopped the mount point from working).

I have the task to set up a machine for users working with sensitive data that should not be leaving the machine where it is processed. This means disabling access to the ethernet device, lan, all other ports as mentioned earlier, and any other way of leaking the data.
In Mac OSX this was achieved using "Parental controls" from the System preferences; this even allows a selection of the applications that can be used. Under XP, Device Manager offers the option to click various devices and "Disable" them, which worked so far just fine. Some will point out that the latter mentioned OS may be easy to circumvent the security of in other ways, but that has been mitigated with other measures and it's not the point anyway. For the operator users in question, the aforementioned measure proved successful and worked.Using OSX and XP to do this was a 10-15 minutes job with testing included.
So far all guides and tutorials pointed to useradd, groups an facl, but in actual practical terms did not help at all, in fact most of the research did not render any practical results so far. I surely don't expect to point and click, and would gladly run a set of commands from CLI. If I had them. I would really would like to achieve the same restricted user account configuration in a concise, comprehensive and practical manner under Linux too. Preferably tested on humans before, and known to be workign, of course.

I am currently in a project to set up an LTSP server with 10 thin clients. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic).
Installing server and booting clients are working fine. Now, according to the need, I have to restrict user session numbers and allow resuming previous user session.
I have achieved to do the first one, but still could not able to setup the second one. As per requirement, if some thin can have power failure, the same session should be restored back. I am confused here, if I need to focus on saving xsessions or saving gnome sessions. I am looking for a concrete solution as I am running out of time.
I made a Desktop User account. When I went on that account, it allowed me to execute sudo as if I was an administrator. I don't know what might be causing this. I do have ufw set up and blocking incoming connections. Do you guys know what might be at the root of this?Also, when I used sudo from the user account (which I shouldn't have been able to do), I provided the password for my admin account.
