Server :: Ubuntu And Bind - Named Log File Is Not Logging Info After Syslogd Restarts

Ubuntu ver 8.04.1 and Bind ver 9.4.2
I've set this up as a primary dns server, Bind is the only thing running on it, no gui, etc. I followed the default settings so I have a named.conf, named.conf.options, and named.conf.local file.
I have a log file I labeled as named.log in this path /var/log/bind. I'm using logrotate to rotate out the file.
My problem is that after syslogd restarts in the morning. My named.log file don't start logging info until I restart Bind. The new named.log file gets created and the old files rotate out and compress. All of the other log files in /var/log, syslog, messages, mail, etc, rotate out and compress like they should, after syslogd restarts.
I know that I could restart Bind using Cron but I shouldn't have to.
Below are snips of the files I'm using.
I named this one 'bind' and it's in the directory /etc/logrotate.d

I am unable to find the syslogd files. Ubuntu 9.1 installed. Logging is taking place. I want to redirect logging to central location. Do I need to install syslogd in order to control this service or is it controled via a different name/service?

I and setting up a home web server using Ubuntu 10.04 server (local only). I am currently using Webmin 1.53 to access it remotely all is going great very easy to use. Webmin - Check, ftps-fileZilla - Check, Apache -It Works BUT I cant seam to set up Apache as a named server using Bind DSN. Tried most of the help in the fourms and ..... I think my problems is in the master server selection, do i have to use [URL]... or can i just use myservername. I have tryed both with no luck. First time with the server addition.

I updated bind to version bind-9.3.4-6.0.3.P1.el5_2 today, and then I started getting "Starting named: named: user 'named' unknown" messages. Selinux is enabled.
ID named shows:

Mandriva 2009, BIND 9.5.0-P2. Named will start however I'm getting the above error as well as these:

Named shows to be running but with the errors above I know it's not running correctly. I also copied the above dir's over to /var/lib/named/var/lib/named which is where I 'believe' it's chroot'd at, though I could be wrong since I'm unfamiliar with chroot.

I'm having some trouble with email being denied because of DNS and/or Reverse DNS issues. I'm hoping someone here is an expert and can shed some light on it for meWe have multiple subdomains, each having it's own entry in the zone file. However, the majority of our traffic goes out an aggregated external IP address with the exception of a few instances such as our mail server and our website(s).We currently have these three records in our example.com zone file:

so i cannot install anything because update-info-dir file is missing from /var/lib/dpkg/info/ .. I've searched for the last day and a half for a way to fix this, but nothing. can't even update dpkg because of this. so how do I bypass or fix this so I can install stuff (this is a fresh install of ubuntu 10.04 lts Lucid Lynx).

host A: Fedora 7 has bind 9.4.2
host B: Fedora 11 has bind 9.6.1
I want to migrate my bind configuration from A to B I've read the release notes and man pages and I can't see why copying
/etc/named*
and
/var/named/*
I checked /etc/sysconfig/named too... Seems to have no effect on my brand new install on Fedora 11. Host B stays basically un-configured.

RHEL 5.4 i want to be able to do redistribution of inbound syslog messages to syslogd. as example, my syslog.conf has in it at the end:
*.* @192.168.5.5
*.* @192.168.5.6
my sysconfig/syslog file has "-r" as the only option for syslogd. any messages generated by the localhost will be sent to the two remote servers, but messages that come into this box (udp 514) only get logged locally and do not get sent out to the remote hosts.
you may ask why do i want to do this. because i have several syslog servers (for security purposes) and many of my net devices are configured to send syslog to all the syslog servers, hence each device is sending way too much duplicate udp-514. so i would like to minimize the udp-514 coming out of the devices, have all devices send to a central syslog server, and then central syslog server do distribution to the other syslog servers. others have also called this "syslog proxy". or, if not with syslogd, how to achieve this (preserving the original syslog message host info, etc)?

What I am trying to do is log IP Address, MAC Address and the host name for records. So I can have a record of what PC got which IP address and when they got it. So far my search has yielded no results. It would not be that big of a deal as I could always look at the dhcp file, but it is generated dynamically (3rd party application using RADIUS and each user gets a host).

i've made a big update of almost 300Mb.I'had a working DNS server.Now, when i boot the box, named works and it resolves all the clients.If i make any change (enter a new client for example) and of course i restart named (service named restart), named stop but does not start again !!!In order to get a working named, i 'm obliged to reboot the box?

whenever I use the files, which are mostly audio files (that is, I play them), after they are downloaded, the torrent files restarts again. So I have to wait for the file again to finish downloading so I can seed.

I'm currently using ubuntu desktop 9.10 (without desktop - I've removed packages) as OS on my server.But there's going on some strange thing ... There are about 8 users, and the thing is they many times user rar or some other disk-demanding programs. What I've noticed is that sometimes server will go with load over 20 (I know that's not good ...) and it will come down in few minutes and everything is OK, but sometimes it just restarts itself. I would like to disable that so it won't restart

Recently, I updated the kernel to the latest version and also installed Ruby and the Passenger module for Apache. The server was fine for a few days.However, today, it's been restarting randomly (usually a minute after I can log in).I tried booting with recover mode so I could view the logs for a longer period of time, but that caused it to restart before even allowing me to log in. Now, all boot modes will just cause the server to restart right after the GRUB messages appear.Our server setup complicates things. We have a RAID-1 mirroring for the /boot partition and a RAID-5 (software) for the / partition

I plugged in my USb drive into my computer yesterday and tried to delete a folder. I was unable to do so and got the following message
Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately? The file "my file" cannot be moved to the trash. Show Details Unable to create trashing info file: Read-only file system
So when I click on delete I get another error message:
Error while deleting.
There was an error deleting Case Study Database. Show Details Error removing file: Read-only file system
At this point I can only click on Skip, Skip All, or Cancel.
I have not changed anything on the stick recently so I dont know what is causing the problem.

I want to create a logon script (or somesuch) that creates a file (if it doesn't already exist) and checks the file for some info otherwise. If it finds a given trigger in that file, it logs into a local database and does some operations.
Now my problem isn't with creating that file or even getting it to function as a logon script -- it's with permissions. After the logon script creates the file, I want that user to have read access on it ONLY. Further, I don't want to give the user any kind of root access so that they could do the database operations in question or chown/chmod the file.
What's the best practice here? I'm noticing that whenever the script runs (in .bashrc right now) the script runs with the current user's permissions. Ideally, I'd like to make it so the login script can run at a higher level of permissions, (higher than the user has). Is this even possible? What's the best way to do this?

Changes I've made to the config files:
Connecting with PuTTy works fine with my public/private keys. But why does sshd start and then restart twice when booting? I tried looking in the logfiles under /var/log/ for anything with ssh/sshd but nothing shows up.

I want my server to automatically shutdown at 23:59 and startup at 8:00. The startup is handled through by bios but the shutdown is to be managed through cron. I thought I had this working, I actually swear I had it working because I thought the uptime command showed the appropriate uptime. I happened to be up and was streaming a movie from my server when at the time it should've shutdown it actually just restarted. If I run the shutdown -h now command by itself it works well but the scheduled command just restarts the server. Here is the what is shown when I enter crontab -e.
