Server :: MyDNS Using Almost 100 Percent Of CPU?
Apr 16, 2010
After about 14 hours of running constantly, top shows that MyDNS is using 99 to 100% CPU. This is insane. There isn't any hints of why this is happening in the deamon logs.
Code:
my:/home/dingle# ps aux |grep mydns

Heck, it only has 11 domains to handle.

When I try to install anything recently, I was getting errors about "No Space". I noticed that the root drive (/dev/sda1) has 100% usage which I'm not sure how that suddenly happened.
Code:
tom@HouseMedia:/$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 9.0G 9.0G 0 100% /
none 1.5G 552K 1.5G 1% /dev
none 1.5G 0 1.5G 0% /dev/shm
none 1.5G 300K 1.5G 1% /var/run
none 1.5G 0 1.5G 0% /var/lock
none 1.5G 0 1.5G 0% /lib/init/rw
/dev/sdb1 294G 182G 97G 66% /mediastorage
There was a powerloss recently and I wondered if some serious corruption had occurred. Since I'm checking the root drive, I had fsck run after a restart:
Code:
sudo shutdown -F -r now
FSCK went to work, briefly, and the logs (/var/logs/checkfs and /var/logs/checkroot) remain empty. Speaking of log files, I had a look at all of them and they take up a mere 32MB, so that's not the issue...
Code:
tom@HouseMedia:/var/log$ ls -h -l
total 32M
drwxr-x--- 2 root adm 4.0K 2011-06-05 06:39 apache2
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4.0K 2011-01-20 10:43 apparmor
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4.0K 2011-06-01 06:37 apt
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2011-03-01 06:43 aptitude
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 851 2011-02-08 10:08 aptitude.1.gz
-rw-r----- 1 syslog adm................
Using Code:
du -h
I know that:
/var uses 1.2 GB
/root uses 100 K
/usr uses 1.4 GB
/tmp is empty
/home has 35 MB
Have already ran apt-get clean. How can I figure out what is taking up so much room? How can I go about figuring out what is huge and is safe to remove?

Nagios had alerted me that the server had a very high load average exceeding the critical level (17+), when logging onto the server I found that all 4GB of the swap was in use despite the fact that there was 15GB+ of free memory (and that's not even including memory from cache and buffers!) Because it seems all heavily used pages were being stored in swap, the I/O wait on the server became very high, and 4 kswapd daemons were taking up nearly 100% available CPU. This did coincide with an error reported by Bacula during a backup job while changing to a bad tape...

Well to cut a long story short, I fixed the problem by disabling the swap partition with 'swapoff'. After about 30 mins all the swap was freed and the server went back to normal. I don't dare reactivate the swap partition and unfortunately as this is a live server which currently has no fail over, I can't reboot either
Server Spec:
4 * Dual-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 8214
32GB DDR2 ECC RAM
RHEL 5.5, 2.6.18-194.11.3.el5 SMP x86_64
Running many KVM VMs (All CentOS x64) and kksmd is used.
bacula-dir Version: 5.0.0
IBM Tape Drive using lin_tape module version 1.34.0 according to modinfo
And before anybody asks
# sysctl vm.swappiness
vm.swappiness = 10

We had to reboot a server in the middle of a production day due to 99% iowait (lots of processes in deep sleep waiting for disk iops). That's never happened to us before. It had been 363 days since the last fsck, so it started automatically on reboot. It hung at 4.8% on a 2TB LVM2 volume for about an hour. I killed the fsck and rebooted the server. The second time, it went past that point and is currently at about 62%. First, what causes e2fsck to hang like that? Second, is there any danger in killing e2fsck, rebooting, and starting it again?

Our CentOS 5.5 server has an intermittent problem where kswapd0 begins using 100% CPU, driving the system load to 20-30 and higher, and eventually crashes the server. The problem seems to be triggered by an intensive Java process (Lucene indexing), but only once every month or two. Lucene reindexing normally runs every 15 minutes without a problem. When the problem happens, there is still plenty of free RAM (as measured by /usr/bin/free's "buffers/cache" value, which is 1.5GB) and free swap space. The server is running MediaWiki 1.15 with the standard CentOS Apache, PHP, MySQL. My intuition is that this is a kernel/swapper bug.

Starting this week I am finding that my computer will randomly start to run high CPU and using TOP. I find that its the apt-get process thats running it up at 100% (please note that top will show processes up to 800% i7quad with turbo-boost show as 8 cores). Whenever I catch this I do let it run for a reasonable amount of time 10-15 mins to allow for updates or whatever its trying.
However, I do end up having to kill -9 it as just don't understand why its running so hot. I realize this is a really early bump but its not intended as so, I was browsing the forums and realized I left the title as apt-get.... and would be better if I gave a more descriptive title. hense the edit. I really hope I am not breaking any forum rules here as I really am not intent on bumping so soon.

I am using Fedora 12. Prior to this I was using Ubuntu 9.10. In Fedora 12, I am facing a problem with battery power. Sometimes when it is fully charged I remove the power cord, battery power comes down to 40%-41%. It never happened with Ubuntu, which gave quite a good battery performance. My question is when it is showing Laptop Battery 100% i.e. fully charged, if I remove the cord why it comes down to 40%-41% (and always in this range).

Like the title says. Suddenly, for no apparent reason KDE jumps to 100% cpu usage. I've tried tracking this down and it's frustrating. Sometimes I have to reboot 2 or 3 times to get it back down.

I wanted to run some really heavy programs on my virtual Windows (32 bit installation). Thats why I have allocated 2GB of my 3GB ram to the virtual OS on Virtual Box.
the VirtualBox is warning me that the setting is non-optimal. What do you think is the optimal setting? Is it VB:UBUNTU::1.5GB:1.5GB? Please explain the reason if you know.

I've just installed the Netbook Edition of Lucid on my MacBook, and it works great, with two issues:
First, each time I start, the computer is extraordinarily laggy (pretty much unusable), until I run System Testing for video, and go through the whole process. Then it seems to work great. Also, I'm having a 100% CPU issue, which switches between my two CPUs. There was nothing under "my processes" that showed any kind of heavy use. But, under "all processes" was something called Backend. I killed the process and now everything seems to be working just fine.

One year ago I decided to give it a try with Ubuntu. I used the 9.04 Live CD, but it didn't perform as expected - it gave randomly errors on boot up, the interface was disappearing and reappearing, applications closed themselves randomly and in the end it usually froze and I had to do the magic SysRQ or hard restart. I installed it then through Wubi - and it was somewhat more stable. It behaved sometimes excellent all the time until I restart, but sometimes it just crashed with an error when I boot up. When 10.04 came out, I wanted to try it out, so I burned the CD.
It was the same as the 9.04 when using the Live CD and when installing it using Wubi it just fails on 25%. I don't have any problems with Windows 7 and another distribution like Knoppix (6.2) runs just fine and smooth from the Live CD. No problems what-so-ever. I haven't did any clean installation on my hard drive because I don't know if this would persist and leave me with a not working system. I still would like to address the problem from a Wubi installation or the Live CD before going for a full installation.
Here is my machine:
AMD Sempron 3300+ @2.0GHz
NVidia GeForce 7300LE 384MB
1 GB RAM DDR1 (2x512MB)
A31G PCCHIPS Mobo

Since I installed Natty on my laptop, some strange behavior occurs. When I open up a file in VLC all is well, I can maximize the window, but then when I go full-screen it starts to eat up all my memory! Including my complete SWAP partition. Rendering my laptop unresponsive......... It doesn't do it all the time though. I have to add to this that I have had this exact same problem with SKYPE, but that doesn't seem to occur anymore. Could it be that certain VLC settings have new defaults or maybe a driver issue?

I have this happening on my vaio laptop and FC11- top shows /usr/share/scripts/shared/onlyservice or /usr/share/logwatch/scripts/shared/onlyservice running %100 of one core of my CPU. It takes 30 to 40 min to stop. Same thing happens when I go to a GUI log-viewer. This, of course wouldn't matter on a desktop, but with a laptop it's kinda expensive. On boot up after the grub I get error: Invalid TSD data!

I'm new to fedora 13 and I have been through a few installs already with a 12TB raid. Fedora is installed on a separate 250GB drive. I've mounted the 12TB drive as a single share and I'm capturing large video files (12-90GB each) to the raid in a Samba Share across the network. The system runs great for about three days and then I start getting warning messages that "the volume filesystem root has only 1.9GB of disk space remaining" then another later 205MB etc until it eventually fills to 100% and then locks the machine. If I reboot I get a Gnome error and can't login. The only solution has been to reinstall fedora again from scratch.
Each time I allocate more space for root. My current partition is 65G in size. The raid shows only 5.1TB of space used and it shows 7.2TB of free space. The raid share shows as being mounted in /media. Root shows that it will be full at 5.2TB, and I'm almost there, so I'm probably looking at another install in just a short while when it freezes again. I've read reinstall and make a larger root partition, but I'm not sure how big that must be to avoid this problem in the future. Also, is there a limitation on the size that root can be? my question stems from the fact that I have over 7TB of free space but somehow the root is reporting as 100% full at only to 5.1TB.

My memory usage keeps building up and up as time goes by, when it hits 100% it logs me out. I have a tad over 9 Gib in swap, that is how it was set up when I did auto install and let it do the partitions. I have 4Gib memory. When I first log in it shows about about 800+ MB being used and starts adding more from there. I can run applications for about 6-8 hours before it hits the 100% marker. At first I was blaming this on the video player, but when I put on a play list each song seems like it gets stuck in memory also adding about .02% per song to max memory.
This seems to pertain to each application I do. Uploaded with ImageShack.us. This pic shows my Computer setting and usage through system monitor and conky script. In another note, I never see my Swap partition being used at all. I am real green to linux and not sure if I was suppose to turn something on. In the partitioner it shows it being mounted and as swap.

I've recently installed ubuntu on a 5,3 edition Macbook pro. It works amazingly and I love ubuntu but I have a small concern. Is it normal for the cpu usage to spike between 10% and sometimes over 70% but usually around 50%? I've ran the top command and its usually xorg, firefox or synaptic package manager causing the spikes. Is this cause for concern? Here is a screen of the cpu usage. When this screenshot was taken I had firefox open while upgrading to the latest version of Ubuntu. [URL]. However when I run OS X I'd have to be running many many programs, including CPU and plugin intensive programs such as Logic Pro with renoise slaved to it. Even with all of this CPU usage rarely goes past 40%.

My config:
Ubuntu 9.0.4 (all up to date with security patches)
Apache 2.2.11
MySQL version 5.0.75
PHP Version 5.2.6-3ubuntu4.5
I'm running Ubuntu as a Virtual machine with VMWare on top of a Windows 2008 Server. It has been working perfectly for nearly 9 months. I have one processor and 2GB of Ram assigned to the Virtual machine. Memory usage seldom ever reaches more than 50%, swapfile is hardly used either. I noticed recently that sites were loading very slow from time to time. Webmin showed me that USER / KERNEL were together using 100% cpu. I then started searching for answers to what was causing this and then read about using HTOP. I then installed HTOP and found that the following processes were the culprits
/usr/sbin/mysqld
/usr/sbin/apache2 -k start
There are multiple instances of mysqld and apache2 listed in HTOP, I assume this is because I run multiple sites on the box. It does however seem limited to only one or two PID's that are repeatedly maxing out the CPU at 100% (every 30 seconds to a minute) sometimes the CPU will stay maxed at 100% for nearly a minute and then free itself again but it is doing this continually. At the point when the CPU maxes out at 100% there will be one instance of mySQLD and one instance of Apache2 right at the top of HTOP and between the two they will be hogging 100% cpu. All the sites are either Wordpress or Joomla sites and I am quite confident it's one of these sites causing a problem.
My issue is that I cannot pin down which PID belongs to which site. Then, once I know which site it is how do I then trace what process / file inside that site is casuing the problem? I figured one of my busiest sites (wordpress) might be the culprit and I installed the W3 Total Cache plugin today but that has not helped this 100% cpu problem, so for all I know it might be another WP site on the box or even one of the Joomla sites. I've noticed that the TIME column on the one MYSQLD instance that maxes out is very long so it seems like Mysql is keeping some connection open or something?

I have a project folder that I pass back and forth between my desktop and laptop via Samba. Both are running Debian. The folder is large. I would like to be able to change a few files in the folder on my desktop and then "update" the folder on my laptop without having to pass the entire folder back over the network.

Most of FLOSS projects has a lot of code to compile, and a big make process. On my new PC i need a half hour to compile Inkscape, and on my old laptop i need something near to 2 hours. There is a way to put a percentage of the work done in the makefile? (Always there are a hard and dirty way... there is a good, beauty, common way?)

I've got a Toshiba L650, Debian testing/unstable, KDE4.4.5. The sound worked when I first installed everything (played a movie in dragon player, etc), but shortly thereafter it stopped working. It seems like the hardware is okay (all hardware is recognized, all relevant modules loaded, volume in alsamixer at 100%, the system beep -- set in the BIOS -- works), but I still can't get sound to play. Once or twice, right before KDE shutdown, I could hear the exit sound, but that's it. Last night I exited KDE (without hearing a sound), shutdown kdm, then:
mv $HOME $HOME.backup
mkdir $HOME
and restarted kdm and kde...still no sound! I created another user, and still no sound!

My pc freezes when firefox is running not only to open a new tab but also to browse some pictures and flash video. The screen freezes, no Keyboard response. Only mouse pointer can be moved but it cannot execute any program. That means I can see the mouse pointer moves but it cannot click on any icon. I have to ssh from my laptop to my PC and kill firefox process but can't get any improvement. The screen is still freezing. Then I have no choice but to use root right to restart the pc. This system freezing has happens many times since the PC system was updated from openSUSE 11.3 to 11.4 one month ago.
It's really random and I don't know when it will happen next time. But when it happens then I have no choice but to restart computer again. I notice that every time when PC freezes, the Xorg occupies 100% cpu resource and as long as keeping this status. Even when the PC dose not freeze, I feel the mouse point does not moves so smoothly. It could stop for a very very short time in its moving. I did not find this moving problem when I was using openSUSE 11.3. I guess it may caused by the video card driver which may not installed appropriately on my openSUSE 11.4.
Using "lspci |grep VGA" I get the following video card information:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT218 [GeForce 210] (rev a2)

I've been using mpd for over an year. Today I noticed that it keeps crashing after about 95% playback regardless of the song I play. When I checked the log file, I found this:
Code:
mpd: /build/buildd/mpd-0.16.1+git20110110.24d51b9/./src/decoder_thread.c:65: decoder_command_finished_locked: Assertion `dc->command != DECODE_COMMAND_NONE' failed.

In the midst of an epic, hours-long saga of attempting to reinstall Kubuntu 11.04 and get my GRUB menu back in order to dual boot with Windows 7 (I accidentally lost the rambling thread I previously typed, so I'm not going to even tell the back story unless prompted), my installation progress bar seems to be sitting at a solid 86%, reading "Restoring previously installed packages...", something I've never seen before. It's sat there for two hours, not moving a pixel. Is there anything I can do at this point? I've been up for hours trying to do this, and I'm about ready to give up on Kubuntu and even seeing my Windows system again.

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, Firefox 4 and the latest version of Flash. My other machine specs are
Code:
processor: 1
vendor_id: AuthenticAMD
cpu family: 16
model: 8
model name: Six-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 2439 SE
stepping: 0
cpu MHz: 2800.112
cache size: 512 KB
fpu: yes
fpu_exception: yes
cpuid level: 5
wp: yes .....
Since this is a virtual machine, it is causing concern in our environment b/c other virtual machines are impacted. How to coax this plugin to use less CPU?
