Ubuntu Servers :: Can Server Tools Be Adapted To Desktop Version?
Aug 12, 2010Is it possible to install some administrative tools under the System -> Administration tab of the Desktop edition of Ubuntu, so that xinetd, chkconfig, netservices, etc can be controlled? I am left with an uneasy feeling about my Desktop version, and finding that it is running services that I really do not want to allow. Apache2 is running for example, but I really am not a web server (yet). Another service is strigi, the indexer. I prefer to have it turned off at times.What administrative tools does Ubuntu offer that can be placed in the sys-admin tab?

Aug 9, 2010I am a php devloper and recently my company purchased an IBM X3400 M2 Server and i was told to set up the server.I installed the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server i386 version. Everything went up smoothly and i have some queries to be asked.
1.)Our scenario is like this,--> we have an a production LAMP Server and we need the to backup all the contents of www folder and all Mysql files.I plan to do this with a shell script and use the rsync for syncing and backup.
Again i have a mysql backup shell script that i want to activate on system shut down Like when i shut down my server,the backup script should run taking all the backups, just before the Shutdown.The script should run take the backups, one, on the server itself and other on a remote machine sync with rsync and system should then go for Final shut down.How can we achieve this.I know of cron jobs but i prefer the above way.Suggestion requested here.
2.)To Set up a Special Samba share. I need to set up a samba share that will allow only files to be copied and not be deleted.For eg i will create a folder "WEBSITE-BACKUPS"(will contain the list of all finished website works plus mysql dump)
The user on the network will have only permission to paste into this folder.Like a user just paste his work say 'abcwebsite',he will have only this privilege and no DELETE privilege or right.Can this be done?
3.)I have a LAN, in this the IBM Machine is acting as Production LAMP server with around 20 machines connecting and working with files on this server.All other machines are Windows.Can i get a log based on the ip like who has accessed with files at what times or last modification time from an IP address. I usually get complaints from my fellow developers that somebody has deleted or modified their work which is in this IBM Server.So is there any way to monitor this.I also know about subversion,the versioning system but most people here are uncomfortable with check in / check out commands.

I have the list of acceptable file formats , now i need to find the rest of the file formats other than the acceptable file formats. is there any tool available for this ? or can some give me the VBA macro .. My VBA macro works to find the file extension in a particular folder but the problem is its ending when the count increases to 65000 (excel limit). How do i use If condition here to avoid the acceptable format and give me unique file formats .

After changing the administrator password only information_schema and test databases are shown in GUI tools (webmin or mysql administrator GUI tool). After the error I restored the password to the old used
if I use mysql in terminal, and use show databases; I can see the 7 databases that I have.
I aslo cannot access to any field using GUI tools (cannot acces to database permissions, or MySQL Server Configuration, host permissions or MySQL system variables). The error is:

Jul 26, 2011We have few servers and we need to monitor mysql and ping (port 80) on our servers to send us email notification and also we need sms notification when something is wrong, we can ask our developer to write sms notification (which is very important for us) because we already have the API and only need a output from a good monitoring tools to show to our developer and ask him to write the notification program.
Our primary sever is centos with WHM installation and hosts about 600 websites.(need to monitor mysql & port 80 on this.)The secondary one is windows server with virtuzzu installation and host about 15 windows VPS (The server crashing some times and we need to findout its out of service ASAP .)Should we use monitoring websites such as hypersins.com or siteuptime.com (which is a little expensive for us especially because of international sms rates.) or there is nice tools we can easily configure and use !

We would like to know if there are any free tools or a script that when the load average hits a certain point it will trigger the system to start logging the processes to see what is happening. Usually by the time we get logged into the system the load average is on its way down. If someone has a better idea please let me know.

We have been tinkering with LTSP on Edubuntu as thin and fat clients. It works great, but right now we just have 1 server handling the lab, which works fine unless we want to expand, which may be very possible.
These are the instructions I received:
Login to your windows server and load the DHCP configuration screen
Create a DHCP reservation for the MAC address you obtained
Add the configuration options below to enable the machine to boot from the LTSP server
017 Root Path: /opt/ltsp/i386
066 Boot Server Host Name: <ip address>
067 Bootfile Name: ltsp/arch/pxelinux.0 # Specify CPU architecture in place of 'arch', for instance 'i386'

I'm curious, what if I want to have multiple Ubuntu servers on the network that I want to have bootable? For example, let's say I have 3 labs, and 3 servers. Server A to Lab A, Server B to Lab B, and Server C to Lab C. I want all C's computers to boot to C, and B to B, A to A, etc.
1 - How would I add multiple entries on the Windows DHCP Server to allow all 3 (A B C) servers to boot?
2 - How would I be able to isolate the clients so ONLY Lab A clients boot to Server A, etc?

Jul 19, 2010I want to have a Linux server "control" a number of Windows workstations. The workstations are a mixture of XP Pro, 7 Pro, and 7 Home Premium (the latter won't join a domain so can't have all the features I want mind). I want:
Centralised username and password database. Easy to add users. Roaming user profiles, so users can switch computers and take their settings with them. If possible, settings for selected programs shared between XP and 7. (They need separate profiles.) My Documents on a network file server. I'm interested in having transparent versioning on this - perhaps by using a copy-on-write filesystem, perhaps just by using a version control app on the server and having cron make a commit every night.
Able to manage software installation and removal centrally. (This I already do, using WPKG). Able to manage configuration centrally. Basically pretty much anything the user could change, I want to be able to force a setting of. I'm thinking desktop wallpaper locking, forcing use of a web proxy, setting printers, restricting use of USB drives, etc. Printer accounting.
Give the clients resolvable names (probably DNS, maybe WINS). This is mainly to help if I need to remote into a client desktop. I don't know to what extent this can be done with Samba. I know it doesn't have all the features of Windows servers, but I know next to nothing about Windows servers. So, can what I want be done? How I'm prepared to read docs for and test things out, but I don't want to be looking for tutorials on something not possible!
