Server :: Acer Aspire Easystore H340 - How Does It Start Without A User Doing A Login

Mar 6, 2011

I have an H340 Home Server, and I really want to eliminate any Windows on it.Having read what people have written here, I installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 on an empty drive via an existing machine. Then I removed the supplied 1 TB drive with Windows Server on it from the H340, inserted the new Ubuntu server drive. Now I can power up the machine, the lights come on, the network light flickers with activity, and...

Well, I am at a bit of a loss at what to "do" now. The H340 is connected to a router, just like my existing machine, so it gets an IP address from the DHCP server in the router. How do I actually connect to the H340? I really don't know. Do I go "Places->Network"? or "Places->Connect to Server"? Or do I do a remote desktop connection?

When it is powered up, how does it start without a user doing a login? There is no keyboard, screen, etc. Only the network cable. I have simply never had to deal with a Server before, so I need some hand-holding for a while. I have Ubuntu 10.10 desktop and Windows 7 dual boot.

Red Hat / Fedora :: 14 On Acer EasyStore H340 Home Server?

Jul 16, 2011

I was planning to install Fedora 14 with Amahi Home Server software on my Acer EasyStore H340 home server. I plan to use two hard drives in it:a 120 GB for most of the OS and a 2TB for the /var directory, since Amahi stores all of the user's files there.

I put the Fedora 14 DVD on an external hard drive, and I was able to boot the installer, but when I have both hard drives in, Fedora says it needs a driver with the system setup.
I found that if I remove one of the drives, setup works without a problem.

In case it's important, the H340 uses an Intel ICH7R storage chipset. There is no option for ACHI in the BIOS, so I have no idea if that's on or not. (I assume it is, though.)I'd prefer to get through the installation using both HDDs, but if that's not possible, is there a way to move the /var directory after installation?

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Get X To Start On Acer Aspire 5100

Dec 21, 2009

Had the RC versions of 11.2 running on my laptop but now the release version is out X no longer installs properly, it gets so far through the installation but then goes to a black screen which is totally unresponsive. If I force a power-off/on it only comes up in text mode and I cannot get X to start automatically. I can get startx to work if I manually reconfigure sax2 using 0=radeon but no way can I get this to happen at startup. Seems a very retrograde situation and something that completely got past quality control.

Probably the end of my time with OpenSuse having been a user for over 5 years, at least Ubuntu installs straight in with no problems whatsoever - exactly what I would have expected from OpenSuse.

Ubuntu :: Compiz Wont Start On Acer Aspire One D150?

Jan 30, 2011

I have been customizing my 10.10 NBR to my personal liking.I have already disabled the default Unity "experience" and enabled Gnome. However I have hit a bit of a tough spot with Compiz. It will install, and it appears I enable it in the Visual Effects menu, but I do not think it actually is enables and once I close the dialog it reverts back to the "none" option in Visual Effects. What I dont understand is that Compiz worked fine on 9.10 NBR.I would just give up, but I really want window previews with the Talika plugin. My netbook is a Acer Aspire One D150.

General :: To Start On Triple Boot Acer Aspire One Netbook

May 13, 2011

I currently have an Acer Aspire One netbook 120GB drive which came with Linpus lite preloaded. I have set-up dual boot a year or so ago. It now dual boots to either Linpus or Vista (yes I know!) via the Linpus grub.conf ( I got the instructions I think from here: [URL] I want to get the latest Ubuntu 11.04 build on this as a third boot option. If this work OK I may ditch the Linpus or Vista build at some point. So I've used Gparted on a USB drive to setup up three extended Logical Partitions (sda5, 6 and 7).

I then loaded Ubuntu s/w via an external drive with

/boot on 100MB /sda5
Swap on 1GB /sda6
/ on the 40GB+ /sda7

When I was asked for the bootloader location in the Ubuntu install gui I chose /sda5 (out of complete ignorance) All fine at this point. What do I have to get the linpus lite /boot/grub/grub.conf to see and start ubuntu?? Or is there something else I need to do?? Also, how does Ubuntu know which swap partition to use, as there is already one for the linpus lite install.

CentOS 5 Networking :: 5.5 + Acer Aspire 5930G - Can't Connect To FTP Server In LAN

Aug 29, 2010

I usually used freebsd. Now I decided to try linux and selected CentOS 5.5. I installed it on my notebook Acer Aspire 5930G (I tried both i386 and x86_64 versions) and I have problems with cable networking. I selected static network configuration during install. Internet access is working via NAT on freebsd server.

I can ping anything in my LAN, I can ping any host in internet, nslookup works fine, but nothing else isn't working. I can't wget even in my LAN, can't connect to FTP server in my LAN etc. The same with internet hosts. Iptables turned off, iptables -l shows that all chains are in ACCEPT. SElinux turned off. NAT for accessing internet works fine - when I reboot to windows 7 with same network config internet is working. I guess this could be problem with driver for my NIC - Marvell Yukon 88E8071 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet. But I can't change it on notebook :)

Server :: Start Services Without User Login - Centos 5.5?

Oct 4, 2010

I installed Centos 5.5 on a home PC to be used remotely.

All server daemons work fine but only start if the user is logged in.

How do I set the SSH server to start whenever the PC is turned on, rather than when the user is logged in? I read the chkconfig man page online but couldn't find anything.

Plus I put a script in my startup services to be run whenever the computer boots (I'm guessing when the users logs in). How do I go about setting that to run too whenever the system boots instead?

Fedora :: Connect To The Samba Server Using Aspire Login?

Dec 28, 2009

I'm trying out Samba for the first time, the main directory is called "workplease", and I have 2 users, "keith" and "aspire". I set the permission on "workplease" to aspire by doing "chown aspire:aspire workplease". Then on my windows7 machine I can connect to the samba server using aspire login, see my "aspire" folder and the "workplease" folder, I can create txt files, folders ...ect

But I would like the user account "keith" to be able to read/write to the same "workplease" folder. I added both users to the group "networkg" by doing

"usermod -a -G networkg aspire"
"usermod -a -G networkg keith"

So my question is how can I make the folder "workplease" have permissions to let any group members of "networkg" read/write/execute anything they put in that folder, or sub folders? Im getting rid of my Windows Home Server , and trying to use samba to do the file sharing for my buddy and I.

edit: Seems doing "chmod 774 -R workplease" changes the permissions on all the files/subfolders, to give owner and group full access only, but is there a way anytime someone creates a txt file, or copies over an mp3 for example, it auto-maticly has 774 permission?

When I try to boot from that CD, I get a message "irq 17 too bust" and the system hangs before finishing the boot process. So I have very little to go on.

Ps. I previously installed Kubuntu 9.1 without any problems.

Ubuntu :: Maverick Installer On Acer Aspire One

Sep 10, 2010

I tried to install the beta version of maverick with no luck. I used usb creator to put maverick on a memory stick. When I went into live mode everything worked perfectly so I thought why not install it. I then tried to do this but after filling out all the required info it wouldn't install. I clicked the install button and the installer froze up. I currently have ubuntu netbook remix (9.04) installed on it in desktop mode. I also, awhile ago, try installing lucid (both desktop and netbook remixes) and had a similar problem with them. They both stalled installing at the 15% mark. Now with this problem with maverick I am wondering why this could be happening. I have used different memory sticks so I have ruled that out as a problem. They all have worked flawlessly and speedily in live mode.

Ubuntu :: Acer Aspire One Wrong Resolution?

Jan 14, 2011

My Acer AspireOne netbook has a native resolution of 1024x600. Most times I start up, the image is 800x480 against the left edge, black bar on the right side, and a repeated image at the bottom. (I can attach a picture if needed.)I've been seeing this problem since Ubuntu 9.10, but it's more common recently with 10.10. If I keep shutting down and powering back on, eventually it will come up in 1024x600 as I desire. If that happens, then I avoid shutting down and only use Suspend instead. However, anytime I need to reboot (for updates, etc.) the 800x480 comes back.

The Acer logo / BIOS splash screen is also in 800x480, but I only see it switch back to 1024x600 after Ubuntu loads and is shut down. (Repeatedly clicking on/off/on/off never results in the resolution changing to 1024x600.) So, I'm still suspicious that Ubuntu is causing this (no hardware). WinXP used to be on this machine, and the problem was never seen.I don't think any proprietary drivers are needed (but I am still a Ubuntu noob.) When the problem is occurring, I see this result for xrandr:

Code:
swope@netbook:~$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 800 x 480, maximum 4096 x 4096
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)[code]....

I haven't been able to find xorg.conf ... but I've read that recent versions of Ubuntu create the content dynamically. Not sure what other details I should be including, at the risk of making this post too long.

Ubuntu Networking :: Acer Aspire 1 533-13Dww LAN?

May 16, 2011

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.4 as a dual boot on my Acer Aspire 0ne 533. I have to keep the Windows partition for work, or I'd have just installed Ubuntu. I'm used to plugging in an ethernet cable for the first round of updates until I get the WiFi working, but it just isn't working for me this time. I have a horrid feeling that Windows has a way of hogging the Ethernet card.

I had a look in the forums, and could not find anything referring to this specifically, which is unusual because as far as I can tell the AA1 is a popular machine and lots of people dual boot it. Perhaps it is an easy fix that's been buried in the archives?
