Security :: Is It Insecure To Leave Bluetooth On?

Jan 29, 2011

I have a Bluetooth connected to my desktop computer, it's on all the time, I use it to transfer files between PC and cell phone. I was searching Google about hacking Bluetooth and all I found was about hacking mobile devices. I don't care about my cell phone - it has nothing important, but I'm curious about my PC security. Can someone get access to my HDD via Bluetooth like it's possible via Wi-Fi?

Ubuntu Security :: Insecure Iptable Rules?

Sep 12, 2010

I've configured iptables to act as a stateful firewall, but instead of simply rejecting packets I'd like to waste a potenial hackers time by droping any packet that would otherwise be returned. Are my rules sufficient or have I somehow opened myself up to an attacker by trying to write these rules myself?

Ubuntu Networking :: Can Connect To Insecure Networks / But Not Secure Ones

Jan 16, 2010

I recently ubgraded to ubuntu 9.10 from 9.04, but I had the same problem there. I can see the secure connections, but when I try to connect to them, it tries to connect, works at it for about a minute, and then asks for the password again. This just started a week ago or so. I am new with ubuntu, so while I know that there are terminal outputs I should probably post, I don't know which ones.

Ubuntu Networking :: No Connection To Insecure Wireless Network

Jan 4, 2011

Ubuntu 10.04: no problems to connect to secured wifi networks. However, when trying to establish a connection to an insecure wifi after some time I get the message "disconnected, you are now offline" without ever having been connected. Once out of about 30 times I get a normal connection. My eeePC 1005HA is double boot and I can connect from WinXP without problems. There seems to be a DHCP timeout (see attached output of syslog). I have seen some posts about the same problem but none of them had a solution. I hate it to use WinXP just for the sake of connecting to the spot.

General :: Create An External SSL Wrapper/tunnel Page For An Insecure Webpage Behind A Firewall?

Mar 14, 2011

I have an security cam with a built-in webpage inside my home network. That camera is using basic HTTP authentication instead of SSL. I want to be able to access the camera's webpage from outside my network, but I don't want to open an unencrypted video stream to the outside world. Right now, I'm doing some cumbersome ssh tunneling where I bounce off an ssh server like: ssh -N -L 9090:[URl]..and then I connect to my web page like: http://localhost:9090

But this is a pain. Now, gentle reader, I beseech you to tell me how I can use linux (Ubuntu) to get a fully encrypted SSL connection to my internal web page without the hassle of creating an ssh tunnel each time. I believe I can use stunnel, but I'm not sure of the command.

Ubuntu Networking :: The Bluetooth Manager Does Not Detect A Bluetooth Dongle?

Nov 2, 2010

The bluetooth manager does not detect a bluetooth dongle .trying to use ndiswrapper to fix.I installed device manager and the results are shown below.i downloaded the windows driver suite. It has 4 .exe self extracting driver archives and a setupconfig.ini. The .ini file is below.I was able to extract one of the 32bit archives on a windows machine and it had about 8 .inf files that are titled weird and would not install properly using ndiswrapper probably because im using the 64-bit architecture. there are 2 64bit .exe's in the driver download, but how can i extract them in ubuntu and do i really need to install all 8 .inf files. also do i actually need to make a .inf file? if so how?

OpenSUSE Network :: Refuse Or Accept The Insecure "old-style" Key Renegotiation?

Mar 15, 2010

What are openSuSE's plans as to the release of an rpm with openssl-0.8.9m which has the solution to the renegotiation man-in-the-middle attack, not just turning key renegotiation down?

As a companion to this version of openssl Apache HTTP 2.2.15 would be very desirable, as it incorporates a patch that allows - at the site's discretion - to refuse or accept the insecure "old-style" key renegotiation.

I don't want to spend the time to backup and transfer, as it would be to time consuming. I don't want to bork the system just to clean out XP.

Debian Multimedia :: Iceweasel And KDE Leave Crashes X

Feb 25, 2011

I installed Squeeze on an eeepc 900.Everything seems to work well, except for one thing: iceweasel, when drawing certain windows, likes to crash the entire KDE session. This is 100% replicable simply by right-clicking on a bookmark put on the bookmarks menu toolbar, and trying to go to "properites" on that item. It only does this, however, on my wife's eeepc 900, it does not happen on my 900A (different gpu and cpu though...). the two systems have the same packages installed.

The most frustrating thing is that there is no error output whatsoever. I have looked through all the logs in /var/log, and I couldn't find anything. I have run iceweasel from the command line and redirected its output to a file, but the whole system hard-locked, and when I rebooted, there was no log file. I have started X using "startx" instead of using kdm, and I cannot see any output to the VT that kicked it off because the system hard-locks.

As far as I can see, it only happens in iceweasel. If I disable compositing, it becomes stable again -- but I don't want to have to do this, as it interferes with features she is accustomed to.Oh yes, I should also add that this netbook worked fine under eeebuntu and compiz -- never an issue.

Fedora :: Leave Message - On Locked Screen ?

Mar 28, 2010

When I first started using Fedora 10 I had a bit of a play with the "Leave Message" button that appears when you lock the screen. After you type the message and click save, the next time the user logged in the messages would pop up.

Ever since Fedora 12, when I leave a test message, after I log in nothing pops up. This happens on two different computers so I don't think its an obscure hardware problem.

Ubuntu :: 10.4 LTS - Leave The Computer Long Enough For The Screensaver To Come On

May 24, 2010

I've just upgraded to 10.4 LTS

First thing i notice is that if i leave the computer long enough for the screensaver to come on, when i want to start work again it requires the user password. It never used to do that and its a nuisance. There is no option to remember it that i can see either. How do i stop it asking for a password every time?

Secondly, i want some thing like the "my computer" facility. I tried setting up an icon using gsconfig - the icon is now on the desktop" - it says "browse all local & remote disks connected to this computer". When i click on it i get an icon saying file system. When i open that i get quite a lot of folders displayed. But what i'm trying to locate is the USB memory stick i have plugged in.. i can't find it..

I also tried setting it up as recommended on a site i found, by right clicking the top left icon on the desktop to get into edit menus. But i dont get that option, or the help option. i just get: about remove from panel move lock to panel.

Programming :: POP3 And Leave Messages On Server ?

Mar 10, 2010

According to RFC 1939: "POP3 is not intended to provide extensive manipulation operations of mail on the server; normally, mail is downloaded and then deleted." However most of the mail clients have that option "Leave messages on server" after they have been downloaded. How is it done?

I tried sniffing mail traffic with Wireshark, but the only POP3 provider I have is Gmail and its POP3 access is SSL secured, so I was unable to gather any info from this... I tried downloading sources of Thunderbird and Evolution and checked what are they doing with "leaving messages", but it seems my C++ skills are not enough - I was unable to understand what is happening when "leaving"...

Suggest me some POP3 provider, that is providing unsecured POP3 access, so I could try again reverse engineering with Wireshark?

OpenSUSE :: Configure Always Stay On And Leave Connection Open?

Aug 24, 2011

I'm using Opensuse on a small computer that needs to run a web site 24/7/365. It's an mp3 player, it's used for music, the player is an html5 player that runs in fullscreen mode of firefox. It's connected to a TV via HDMI. I've set all possible power options so it never sleed, idle, hibernate or close. Same thing for display, never dim or turn on screen saver. Although the TV is not ALWAYS on the PC's HDMI input, sometime switching to TV Tuner and other time to PC display. So if we switch the tv's input to tuner and the to PC, opensuse won't re-detect the display and the TV will say NO SIGNAL until I completely reboot the PC ... very annoying ... The other problem is that the TV is far from the server so I need to use VNC and re-open firefox, go to the player and re-set fullscreen mode. But worst, I can only use VNC once. If I want to reconnect via VNC, I need to login SSH, restart service and then I can connect ...1. How can we set VNC to ALWAYS accept connection and that from a fresh boot ?

Ubuntu Installation :: Selection Won't Leave The GRUB Selections

Jan 14, 2010

Finally got a dual boot on this laptop the way I liked it (LOVE my Win7, really like UBUNTU for certain things like getting booted and on the net fast...great). As I was editing and rebooting the GRUB settings UBUNTU got it's updates and installed (including one on GRUB that I hadn't seen before - WITH WARNINGS). Now I can't seem to get this last entry out of the boot menu: vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic. It has all this listed now (had dual entries for everything like mem test before):

vmlinuz-2.6.31-17-generic
vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic
Windows 7

I got rid of the extra entries like memtest and all using: sudo chmod -x /etc/grub.d/20_memtest86+ and such variations..still though I got one stuck in the boot selections. It won't remove the old linux vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic build entry from GRUB (and they both point to the same place). It has a -14 and -17 entry in it now. Like I said both load to the same mount point.

I mean I removed like five extra entries from GRUB using that command after the update (and had done it before about two months ago) but the linux vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic selection won't leave the GRUB selections now. I really thought I had it figured out to the bomb having my laptop dual booting before, just didn't like how UBUNTU used my disk space by default last time so I decided to rebuild the laptop.

I will format and repartition using windows xp installer. I'm leaving 20 GB for ubuntu. So I can install ubuntu in 2 ways...

1) While re-partitioning, i can leave 20 GB unallocated and later put ubuntu there

OR

2) Install windows XP the normal way, and then allocate 20GB for ubuntu using GPART - by shrinking a windows partition. (as shown in video)
