SUSE :: Drive Mounting, 'Computer' Page?

Apr 1, 2010

I added a second internal hard drive (/dev/sdb1) to a SuSE Linux system. I chose /home/users/STORAGE as a mount point. If I navigate to /home/users/ and right-click on the STORAGE directory and choose properties, I can see the amount of free space in the sdb1 partition of the second hard drive. Everything looks as I expected it to.However, if I choose the 'My Computer' option, click on home from there, which is where /dev/sda1 is mounted) and then navigate to STORAGE, the address bar in Konquerer looks something like this: da1:/users/STORAGEI might not have the format completely right but I do know that sda1 is listed at the beginning of the address. Yet if I copy files into this directory they end up in sdb1. Are there any issues with accessing the directory this way? When I right-click on STORAGE after navigating to /users/ through the My Computer page, the space used/available does not reflect the sdb1 partition.

A second question I have: On the My Computer page each mount location is shown in the top-right corner. The name of the new internal hard drive I added is displayed as "1TB media." That name is also a link to the mount point. How can I change this to something else? I would avoid using the My Computer page all together but there are many other people using this system and most of them know no other way to access thedirectorie

Ubuntu :: Mounting And Using An Ext3 Hard Drive On Win 7 Computer?

Jan 20, 2010

I have 2 computers, one running ubuntu 9.10 Karmic and the other runs Windows 7.

I have several sata hard drives that I keep files on. They are all formatted ext3. I have a blacx sata to usb dock on my ubuntu computer that I use to go through files and back up and such. I have a usb to sata dock on the windows 7 machine.

When I plug in the hard drive Windows says that it has to be formatted and the drive is "raw"

I can check the drive in ubuntu and everything is right

I tried installing ext2fsd and it sees the drive but wont let me select any file type or mount it. I think because its going through the usb port.

So how can I make windows 7 see and be able to access an ext3 formatted drive thats plugged into the usb port?

SUSE :: On Restart The Computer Does Not Recognize The CD In Rom Drive?

Feb 1, 2010

Is it possible to have a tri-boot system ? I currently have a dual bootsystem on mydesktop. Win XP & Ubuntu. I want to add SUSE 11.2 but don't know how to go about loading it onto my machine. On restart the computer does not recognize the CD in my rom drive and only asks if I won't to load Windows or Ubuntu. How do I go about adding another OS to my hard drive ? I have an old Gateway with 130Gb hard drive and plenty of unallocated drive space and 512Mb of Ram. I use Windows rarely (almost never but do need it for some applications) and mostly rely on Ubuntu which my wife and I both like and use daily but I want to look at and experience other Linux installations as well

OpenSUSE Hardware :: New Sata Drive Is Sda - Computer Doesn't Boot (SuSE 11.2 64)

Dec 17, 2009

I had put a second Sata hard drive in my computer and was pleasantly surprised not to run into any problems. No BIOS changes, just start the partitioner, partition, mount, it worked. And then... my computer didn't boot today.I disconnected the new hard drive and it went a little bit further, allowing me to log in as root and remove some lines in /etc/fstab. After that, it booted without any issues.I then remembered that the new drive was /dev/sda and the old drive /dev/sdb. I assume this is the reason for not booting, there is no GRUB on /dev/sda. How do I fix this? Can I simply plug in the cable for the new drive where the cable for the old drive was?

SUSE :: Mounting Remote Directory On Startup On Suse

Oct 7, 2010

So ive got a Suse server up and running. It is connecting to a clearcase server, so i want to mount the remote filesystem as part of startup, as this is generally rebooted when im not around.I would normally add something to /etc/init.d and put the shortcut to it in the appropriate runlevel (in this case 3). Tried that. Didnt work.

Realised the init script needed to have the LBS stuff at the start, so put that in, and used insserv to add the script. I used required-start set to $ALl.This successfully created the init script with S20, and i eneabled it with chkconfig.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Mounting Devices In Suse 11.2?

Dec 13, 2009

I came into this strange behavior related to mounting DVDs and/or CDs in SuSE 11.2 : after inserting a DVD intro the DVD unit, and mounting it through the "device notifier" applet, I find the disk mounted in /media under a folder named after the disk label (as expected) BUT ... the folder is in fact padded with blanks after the name found as label for the disk. For ex.: I have a DVD called DVD_ROCK2 The mounting is made in "/media/DVD_ROCK2 " (the folder created at mounting time in /media has 14 characters (if I counted them correctly) instead of the only 8 from the name of the disk This does affect my application "cdcollect", which crashes when it encounters a mounted disk which contains spaces in it's label.

I tried to adjust cdcollect, by modifying it's dources (trying to "trim" the name readed as disk-label, but with no results; anyway I am not good at C#, and even kinda hate this language, so... I'd prefer a solution coming from Linux's point of view: what changed in the mounting system from Suse 11.1 till now ? what can I do to change this way of mounting the disks ?I cannot state this happens with every single one of my DVDs; the ones wich are mounted this way are generally written in the same PC, in older versions of SuSE (11.0 and 11.1). Unfortunatelly, I had an older written disk (way back on SuSE 9.x) which does not behave this way (it is mounted in a folder with the name created exactly as the label is, without the padded spaces).

SUSE :: Very Slow Computer - HD Dying?

May 3, 2010

If I start it up, and it's fast, it's like that through out. But if I start it up, and it's slow, it is slow like that for a whole time, and doesn't recover. When that happens, I saw the CPU almost 100% all the time. The hard drive light indicator would be on all time time. The top command doesn't indicate any process that use a lot of CPU. It just has a high "wa" percent. My remedy so far is to restart the machine, and hopes it's fast again. Sometimes it does sometimes, it doesn't. It always start up to the login screen very fast.

However, even before logging in, I can see it's slow if the hard drive light is on all the time, and not blinking). Even typing in the password would show a slow echo of the *. This is OpenSuse 11.2, 64 bit. The file system is ext4 (I wonder if it has something to do with this). Does anyone have any pointers on how to troubleshoot this? I may do a re-install. However, if the hard drive is failing, then I'll just back up and wait for the day it stops working.

SUSE :: Put The Same Disk Image On Another Computer With The Same Hardware

Jan 18, 2010

I installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on a computer. I would like to clone the hard drive so that I can put the same disk image on another computer with the same hardware.

I used clonezilla to create the hadr disk image, when I restore the image on another computer, I got errors and failed to boot. I later learned that, I have disk-by-id on /etc/fstab and grub/menu.list. So, I went into the computer that I tried to restored using Knoppix liveCD and manually changed the fstab and menu.list so that it used something like /dev/sda1, /dev/sdd2, and /dev/sda3, instead of /dev/disk/by-id/WD....-part1 (part2/part3). When I re-booted the new computer, it still failed to boot.

So, do I have to go back to the original computer, manually edit fstab and menu.list to /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2 /dev/sda3, then re-create the disk image? Is there anything I have to change so that it does not use disk-by-id any more?

Fedora Installation :: Not Mounting Second Drive?

Jun 18, 2011

I just switched to Fedora (from Ubuntu) and can't seem to get Fedora to automount my old drive (which is my old Ubuntu drive). I tried the following with no luck (in fact, when I did this, it chocked during boot and went into emergency mode:

In /etc/fstab, I entered:

/dev/sdc /media/UBUNTU_DRIVE defaults 0 0

Another odd thing is the UBUNTU_DRIVE directory just disappears after reboot (and I know it was there before rebooting).

I have two additional drives in my tower, and both do show up in gparted, so I'm not sure why they're not getting mounted.

Why can't Fedora auto mount secondary (internal drives) automatically?

What can I do to tell it to auto mount the secondary drives (I have two) automatically?

Quote: "Disk drive for /hdba/sda7 is not ready yet or not present" "Continue to wait, or press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery" If I press S then I have an ALMOST working system. You see: I have an external USB hard drive, shared between XP and Ubuntu with all my files in it, and it won't mount. It's a simpletech and it was working just before the update and it loads, mounts and unmounts perfectly on windows and on another laptop I've got running crunchbang!. -Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
-Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
