SUSE :: Recovery - Update The Boot Loader?

May 28, 2010

I'm running Suse 9 service pack 2. I have the recovery cd in the system and have issued the following command /sbin/mkinitrd -m "reiserfs aacraid mptscsih jbd ext3" -b /tmp/kevin/boot -d /dev/sda2

They system responded with : Root Device: /dev/sda2 (mounted on / as reiserfs) Module List: reiserfs aacraid mptscsih jbd ext3 You may have to update your boot loader configuration QUESTION: How do I update the boot loader from the where I am now?

Note: the reason that I need the bott information is because during maintenance the module reiserfs was left out the kernel file when the a previous mkiniterd command was issued cuasing /dev/sda2 not to mount and the system to go into a kernel panic.

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Get Back Suse Boot Loader

Aug 2, 2011

Now after my experiments with Open Indiana on another partition, I have rewrite my Suse Grub, that was as in / suse partition as in MBR. Suse partition is intact as well as files in /boot/grub, but in MBR is boot loader of Open Indiana as primary. How can I get back Suse boot loader. On Installation media under Rescue system I didn't find any option for re-installation of boot loader.

P. S. Now I can run Suse completely in Gui without any problem, because, I made some changes, in Open Indiana boot loader, but I would like return a Suse Grub.

SUSE :: Add The Windows Partition To The Boot Loader Settings?

Apr 29, 2010

I'm running SuSE 11.2, dual booted with Windows 7. SuSE installed fine, but when I rebooted, it went straight to windows and didn't give me the option of booting into SuSE. I reinstalled SuSE and went into the boot settings in Yast. When I rebooted, neither Windows nor SuSe would boot. I ran a system repair from the SuSE disk, at the boot loader settings, it displays the SuSE Linux partition and the Failsafe Linux recovery partition. I did not format any drives in the system repair. How do I add the Windows partition to the boot loader settings?

SUSE / Novell :: Grub Boot Loader - File Not Found - Error 15

Oct 12, 2010

I am unable to get a knoppix poor mans install to boot using grub and opensuse 11.3. I have tried the same method on another box, same opensuse 11.3 and it boots fine. However, no matter what partition I put the knoppix files in on the problem box, it is the same error. I also have several opensuse kernels listed in the grub menu that were added when the kernel was updated, so the knoppix grub entry is off the screen. I have to down arrow to list the knoppix entry. I read that with this kind of error using ubunto as the host system, that running update-grub will force grub to look for bootable kernels and add it to the menu of boot choices. Does the same fix apply to opensuse 11.3? I have two versions of puppy linux working on this box as a poor mans install, so I am at a loss why it will not see the knoppix kernel. Can it be a problem of too many kernels listed in the menu.lst file? This box is a live update from opensuse 11.0.

SUSE :: Deleted Grub Loader And Partition - Recover Boot To Load Windows 7?

Oct 25, 2010

I let a 'friend' use my laptop over the weekend. Now when I turn it on, it loads the BIOS details, then says no active partition, then no OS cannot be found.

It looks like they have deleted the partition with SuSE with the Grub Loader.

I cannot load up SuSE or Windows 7!

Any ideas on how to recover the boot to load Windows 7?

I have tried using the Windows 7 install disc to repair - but it does not recognise that Windows is installed and wants to do a clean install only.

Is it worth trying to reinstall SuSE and hope it detects Windows on the other partition? (I assume it is still there!)

I cannot get to a command prompt.

Ubuntu :: Use A Windows-based Recovery Partition On A Dual-boot Computer To Overwrite Partition And Remove GRUB Loader?

Mar 9, 2010

is it possible to use a Windows-based recovery partition on a dual-boot computer to overwrite the Ubuntu partition and remove the GRUB loader? For instance, if you booted up your computer, accessed the hidden recovery partition and used it to reset the computer to it's factory default settings, would that effectively remove the Ubuntu partition and the GRUB loader? Would a completely new installation of Windows overwrite/uninstall Ubuntu and GRUB automatically?

Fedora :: F13 Update Broke Boot Loader

Jan 3, 2011

I just ran yum update, which installed about 47 packages. When I try to restart, the Linux boot loader is not being read. Apparently, the old Windows 7 boot loader that came installed on this machine is still somewhat intact on the hard drive, because when it boots, it tries to start Windows. I put in a Red Hat 5 rescue disk...but the rescue disk can't find a Linux file system on my hard drive.

Fedora 13
Dell Latitude E6500
Also...the disk is encrypted.
(Not the swap or /boot)

Installation :: Vista Recovery With Grub Loader?

Mar 8, 2009

I have a laptop which was originally running Windows Vista, I attempted to install Windows XP on via USB since the laptop couldn't boot the install disk (this has turned out to be a bad disk drive. This fell flat on its back and wouldn't even finish the install (although not before formating the Vista install in to oblivion). Although I was extremely careful to leave the Vista recovery intact. So I managed to get Ubuntu 8.10 (XFCE if that makes any difference) installed over USB. I was wondering, Could I use the GRUB louder to boot into the recovery drive? Laptop is a Toshiba Equium L350D

I just deleted the windows vista partition and formatted the hard drive (ext4) and now just use Ubuntu, however, in the grub boot, vista and recovery is still showing up. How can I clean the grub up and delete these entries. I've searched all over the place, googled like crazy and all I can find is how to get rid of grub or reinstall the MBR of vista (etc). One more thing, how can I permanently mount the new empty hard drive in Ubuntu so that I have access to it all the time w/out having to mount it.

SUSE :: USB Installation Recovery - Restore System From Initial Menu

Mar 10, 2010

I have an installation from USB/DVD issue.

Setup:
1. Desktop running WinXP
2. Lenovo S10e netbook running Win7RC1 (just expired.) no DVD drive.
3. 1 DVD by Novell and Lenovo with "SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 (For recovery select Restore System from the initial Menu.) November 2008"
4. 4GB USB drive. Laptop can boot from it.

Problem:
Need to install the system to the Laptop using the USB drive. Doesn't install.
What I did:
Mostly followed the guide at "Installation without CD - openSUSE.htm" my USB drive is G:

used the HP USB Disk storage format tool to make my USB bootable.
Copied all files from the dvd to the usb drive
Moved G: ooti386loader* to G:
Deleted E: isolinux.bin
Renamed E: isolinux.cfg to E: syslinux.cfg
Downloaded syslinux-3.85.zip from [kernel.org]
Extract syslinux-3.85.zip to c: syslinux
CD'ed to c: syslinuxwin32 directory in a cmd prompt
Ran syslinux -ma E: .....

Result:
Runs all the way through, gets to a windowed program called ">>> Linuxrc v3.0.20 (Kernel 2.6.22.5-31-default) <<<" Code: could not find the openSUSE Repository. Activating manual setup program

Main Menu: Settings, System Information, Kernel Modules (Hardware Drivers), Start installation or System, Verify Installation CD-ROM/DVD, Eject CD, Exit or Reboot, Power off Cant find anything on the usb drive (obviously?) so what do I do now?

This is where I'm at and quite stuck... not sure what other flags there are to use, what I have to move around or rename.

SUSE :: How To Update SUSE 10 Sp2 Without Corrupting Files

Jun 16, 2009

I have a SUSE 10 sp2 server that I am using for hosting VMware and virtual machines. I have installed the basic host machine with only file server enabled (no dns, dhcp, print services or anything else). This is the fifth time I have had to reinstall because after I applied all the updates the system downloaded, it would not boot with a cd/dvdrom mounted. I tried everything I knew hot to do, which I admit isn't much (edited the fstab, tried to mount through command line) but nothing brought it back.

this all started because I had the entire machine loaded with VMware, two virtual machines, and all was well until I decided to update the OES2 sp1 virtual machines. All manor of issues cropped up like corn in the summer. So I reloaded after a week because I couldn't fix the problems and decided in my limited knowledge the updates probably caused the issues, and there was no undoing the updates. I assume (dangerous as that may be) that I applied too many updates to my bare system, but I would like a more experienced opinion.

Fedora :: Cannot Run F11 After Update - Grub Loader

Dec 8, 2009

I'm relatively new to linux. I got fedora 11 working as a dual boot on my computer a few months back. I accepted all Fedora updates yesterday. Powered down my computer at the end of the day, and today it won't run fedora. It gets into the grub loader and there is an extra kernel (Fedora 2.6.30.9-99.fc11.i586, Fedora 2.6.30.9-96.fc11.i586, Fedora 2.6.30.9-167.fc11.i586, Windows). Clicking on any of the kernels to load linux starts it up, the bar at the bottom of the screen goes from blue to white and fedora 11 lights up, but then the screen goes blank and I am never given the option to login. If I select the windows loader, I am able to get into windows. I have pressed escape or removed the quiet line in the loader, but haven't seen any errors on loading.

Fedora Installation :: Multi Boot System - Set Up The Boot Loader ?

Mar 18, 2010

I'm trying to install Fedora onto a computer that has Windows XP on the first of two SATA drives. Windows 7 is on the second drive.

I installed Fedora no problems on a 14 gig free space I created on the first drive and told it where and what my other OS's were. Fine so far. I didn't tell it to overwrite the MBR on the XP (first) drive. I took the second option which I "think" put the boot loader on the fedora partition.

All good - till I rebooted and I just saw my Windows 7 loader with my options for XP and Windows 7 but no Fedora.

So, if I overwrite the MBR on the first drive, will that mean I can't access my Windows 7 installation?

How SHOULD I set up the boot loader?

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Boot 10.04 Via Windows XP Boot Loader

Jul 28, 2010

I have 2 HDDs:

HDD 1 (sda) with Windows XP installed on sda1 and four more partions.

HDD 2 (sdb) with three NTFS-Partitions (sdb1, 5 and 6) and Ubuntu 10.04 (sdb7) + Swap-Partition (sdb8).

I would like to boot Ubuntu using the Windows XP boot loader, i.e., having an entry there to choose Ubuntu and start my installation of Ubuntu 10.04. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 on sdb7 and told the installer to install the grub2 boot loader to /dev/sdb (should it have been /dev/sdb7?). When using the boot selection option of my bios and choosing the second HDD Ubuntu starts without problems.

I used dd if=/dev/sdb of=bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1 to copy the mbr of my second HDD and copied the file bootsect.lnx to my c: drive. Then added C:ootsect.lnk = "Ubuntu Linux" to my Windows boot.ini. When rebooting my computer I get the option "Ubuntu Linux" in the XP boot loader. Choosing it I come to a black screen with a blinking white cursor. All I want to do is not use Grub 2 as my primary boot loader but instead leave my WinXP installation untouched and start Ubuntu from within WinXP boot loader. This has been working just fine with my old Ubuntu installation.

I'm a Windows guy (have to be, I'm a gamer), so my knowledge of Ubuntu is limited to whatever I can do in the GUI. The command line is beyond me at the moment ('cause it ain't DOS). More so because I have an identical installation to his system (I built both), and I'm wondering if this is about to happen to me too.
