Red Hat :: Not Possible To Set Default Paper Sizes?

Aug 31, 2010

The "[SOLVED]" attribute to the How to set defaulter size in RHEL5 thread notwithstanding, the problem really is not solved. I've set my default language to both "C" and to "EN-us" and the problem is that absolutely every single time I print, I have to meander through varying layout print menus to find the "A4" setting and change it to "letter". That, or sacrifice the last two lines on every page because the default size is larger than the actual size. Bad default. It is not unique to Red Hat/CentOS, of course. Same problem exists on Debian and SuSE, too. Why is this such an intractable issue? Why is there not some simple and obvious way to say, "squish all instances of A4 (or "letter") and replace with "letter" (or "A4")!"?

Debian Multimedia :: Can't Make Default Paper Size Stick In Gedit?

Jun 1, 2010

I am using the Gnome desktop in Lenny 5.03The default Gedit paper size is "US Letter", which is almost right for my HP Laserjet 4L, except that about .5 inch at the top and .25 inch at the left margin are cut off.I have defined a "Custom Size" under File -> Page Setup -> Manage Custom Sizes... with margin settings that solve the problem, but this "Custom Size" only remains the default Paper Size for printing until Gedit is closed.Using what appears to be the same gnome dialog from epiphany and evolution, the Papersize settings stick, but not from Gedit. I cannot locate any configuration file to edit, and nothing in the gconf editor seems to apply.

Slackware :: Load The Paper Then Stop And Not Print

Mar 12, 2010

I swore I wouldn't do it again, but I did it anyway and installed 'current,' but I'm using Xfce not KDE. Everything was working very well, until I tried to print this morning. From Okular it would load the paper then stop and not print. From OpenOffice it would load and print, but the output was garbage.

Finally, I moved copies of what needed to be printed to the Xp partition, booted to Xp, and documents printed out just fine. As noted I'm running Slackware64 'current' with the latest versions of Cups and Hplip. The printer is a HP 940c. Hplip reports everything is fine, as does CUPS when running it in a browser (localhost:631).

Hardware :: Wine - Can't Print Properly To Legal Sized Paper

Jul 6, 2011

I'm trying to set up a customer who has two printers attached to their computer one is some sort of okidata color laser printer, which seems to work fine the other one is a brother HL-4040CDN, which prints fine from a Linux based application such as open office.

When i try to print from a program in wine, however, I can't for the life of me get it to print properly to legal sized paper, it doesn't complain about paper size or anything, it simply crops the print size to that of letter sized paper even though I tell it the paper size is Legal.

I have tried setting the default paper size on the printer's firmware settings, I have tried setting the paper size in cups both through the printer preferences applet and the web interface, i have tried telling the program to print to legal paper and the only thing i can affect is which end of the paper it prints to, i have even tried different drivers for CUPS, i'm not sure if the problem is wine, the program, the printer, or how wine talks to the specific printer via cups (the other printer prints fine) i am using ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10.

OpenSUSE Install :: Ideal Partition Sizes

Feb 27, 2011

Usually I prefer to keep my operating system on a small partition (50 gigs or so), with the rest of my system on another partition. Normally, with windows (don't flame me for saying the W word!) a small OS partition makes sense.... this way i can scan for viruses, or defrag quickly-- two non issues with linux openSUSE. (with windows, i never install programs on my C: either; this keeps the OS partition small)One advantage at least on windows, with having a small operating system partition is that it's really easy to backup & restore. If my system gets wiped out, I only lose the OS and if i have to re-install, all my personal files are still there.

Is This Done for Me Already With the Default openSUSE Partition Set-up?I just got a new 1TB Seagate HD, which I'm going to use for development purposes in the openSUSE environment.I'm wondering if I can somehow apply my methodology explained above to openSUSE (or if it even makes sense). Are the default LVM partitions ideal for a clonezilla back-up? (can I just backup my primary partition, on the second partition somewhere in case I really mess up my machine). I've been using openSUSE for just a month now, and I'm really liking it (its my favorite linux OS now).
