Red Hat :: Controlling Tool Running On VM Fron Windows?
May 11, 2010
I have a virtual machine with RedHat. It has a command-line tool X that takes an input file + some control parameters, performs some processing and generates some input files. I have a Windows XP/Server 2003 box where an app Y is running. What I need to do is to control X from Y. That is, given an input file, I have to feed this file from Y to X, have X process the file and then Y collect the results. Y would be running either on the host Windows machine using VM Player or on a separate box. Input files might be quite large. I need a solution that would be of production level quality. What would be the best approach to this? I presume I will need to develop some components both on the Windows side and the Linux side that would communicate with each other, send input and output files etc. What would these components be? The VM has a Redhat Enterprise install, so I have access to gcc, but not sure which other development tools.
*Solved* I have been reading the following guide on how to use the VNC programs and a GUI to connect to my main machine from my laptop via my LAN and router:
[URL]
This allows me to control the server remotely, and run applications on the server remotely, with the GUI output being shown on my laptop, which is really neat I had Eclipse + PDT running on my server and had to stop it and start a new instance remotely from the laptop via VNC viewer, as Eclipse said the workspace I wanted to use was already in use.
So starting the VNC server on the main machine does not allow me to access the programs that are already running on the main machine under the native X server. However I can now do PHP debugging remotely using Eclipse + PDT now, and all the PHP source code is on the server machine. That's OK, but I would like to do more than that. I want to be able to connect to the native X server on my main machine, and control all the applications running on the main machine remotely from my laptop, without having to shut them down and restart them again via a VNC viewer.
Is there some sort of remote control program I can use to allow me to connect to the running X server on my main machine from my laptop, and control those applications remotely please, so the desktop layout on the main machine's screen is mirrored on the laptop screen?
I need to run an application on a virtual desktop (let say desktop #2) and control it via another app running on the root desktop (desktop #1). That would include screen capture and mouse movements. So basically I capture the application window from desktop #2, scrape it and then click on buttons via my app on desktop #1. Anyway you got the idea. Now my big question is: is that doable ? and if so what's the best language to do it ?
I've been looking for a way to use my laptop (running Ubuntu) to help service a remote laptop (running Windows XP). I've used TeamViewer and Cisco's VPN Client before, but TeamViewer is Windows only, and I don't want to pay for a Cisco system just to help maintain my friend's computer.
Ideally, I'm looking for something similar to the programs listed above, but I really just want to know if any of you have done this before, and if so, how?
So I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 from fresh. I do dual run with Windows and i like to share the folder with Win, so I need ntfs-config tool to automount the Win-Data partition. Installed ntfs-configuration tool and wont launch, tried through console and got:
Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/ntfs-config", line 102, in <module> main(args, opts) File "/usr/bin/ntfs-config", line 75, in main app = NtfsConfig() File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/NtfsConfig/NtfsConfig.py", line 56, in __init__ os.mkdir(HAL_CONFIG_DIR) OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/etc/hal/fdi/policy'
I just done a brand new install of fed12 and did all the yum updates. Apache seems to start ok and I always liked the http config tool but it won't run on Fedora 12. I downloaded and installed system-config-httpd.noarch 5:1.4.6-1.fc12 and it all went fine but when I try to start it I get the usual box asking for my root password, I type it in and press enter, the box disappears and then....nothing. If I run system-config-httpd in a terminal I get the same box asking for root passowrd but when I enter it I get a long scroll of text which ends with:
line 4: 2137 Aborted (core dumped) /usr/bin/python /usr/share/system-config-httpd/ApacheConf.py
I don't know what causes this. Is there any way to get the http config tool working?
My friend asked me to look at their laptop as it was not booting up. I checked it and found that you could not even boot into safe mode. I have used a windows boot disk to try and sort any issues but this has not worked. The problem is he never made the recovery disks by the manufacturer so I cant reinstall windows. I can access all the files on the hard drive when running Ubuntu. So what I need to know is it possible to run the manufacturers program to make the recovery disks from Ubuntu.
I am running a mentor graphics tool which used java-jre. Every time I try to invoke the tool I get the following error message
From the error message I thought gcc_4.2.0 is not installed in my system. I went to synaptic package manager and installed gcc_4.2, but I still get this error.
I'm using 32 bit ubuntu and from time to time when I boot up every window I open is missing the tool bar up top that contains the minimize, expand and close buttons. usually a reboot or 2 fixes it but it hasn't worked. how do I fix this bug?
every now and then, one of my customers forgets his windows user password, and asks me to reset it. till now i used a small windows app called "Password Renew for NT" from a windows PE bootdisk, but i want to have an alternative that runs on my opensuse 11.4 box, so i can connect the windows hard drive on it and reset the password from suse.
I found and the program "chntpw" in the build service, but it seems on beta status. And most information i found of it is very outdated. Has anyone used it? does it work ok on all modern windows versions (xp, vista and 7)? any other alternatives you can recomend?
I have seen this question, but it's answers are not good enough for me, because I do not have a window manager on my system.
Is there a console tool that can hide windows?
I am using xwininfo to get information about the window. It gives window id, and some additional stuff. This id should be enough to do any operation with the window.
I've been supporting Microsoft OS and Apps since 1992. I hold a BSEET and am one test shy of MCSE. I have my own Computer Support business helping Individuals and Small Business keep their M$ PCs running.
I'm also sick of Microsoft. I'm tired of their manipulations, deceptions, and failure to produce Software that serves the needs me and my customers. I've been watching Open Source for 3 years hoping for an Alternative I could recommend to my customers. I'm very excited about Ubuntu 9.10.
There is just one thing missing. I think it can be done, but I need the help of the experienced Users here. What I'd like to do is copy the existing "C:Documents and Settings" folder to a USB Drive, Install Ubuntu using the entire disk (blow Windows away), and finally point the (excellent) Windows Migration Tool in Ubuntu to those Profiles and have it Import them just like it does in a Parallel Install.
I found this:
Code: 1.) Fire up live CD
2.) Open up a terminal
3.) sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list and remove all comments (#) in front of the repositories, and save the file.
4.) sudo apt-get ntfs-3g
5.) mkdir /mnt/win
6.) ntfsmount /dev/<disk and partition number here> /mnt/win
7.) mkdir /mnt/win/users
8.) mv /mnt/win/Documents and Settings/<userprofile here> /mnt/win/users/
9.) umount /mnt/win
10.) start ubiquity from the commandline wih the new-partitioner switch like this: ubiquity --new-partitioner
11.) after the setup is done do NOT reboot
12.) mount the disk in step 6 again and move the profiles from step 8 back to the Documents and Settings folder. Else Windows might throw a tantrum not finding profiles.
But it fails at the sudo apt-get ntfs-3g command. I guess that's because this was written for a version that's several years old. update the Process for v9.10?
When pressing Alt+Tab to switch between applications, I notice that it's actually all open windows that are presented, including tool windows in Gimp. Is there a way I could configure this so only document windows are presented, or better still, only applications like on Mac OS X? Or a third party solution?
It is a sad day indeed, but I need to run a developer's tool that only runs on Windows, and it interfaces with a USB device that doesn't do well through any VMs I've tried. I've resorted to installing XP.
Now, I'm wondering if there will be any problems I'll face installing XP after Ubuntu 10.04 has already been installed? I suspect so, but it's been a while since I dual booted, and I've never worked with Grub2,
I am new to the linux world. i have just started using ubuntu 9.04.though i have installed golden dictionary ,i wanted to ask is there any other tool is also available which may work offline too as we have Cambridge advanced learner's dictionary available in windows?
I just used the repair tool (automatic) after doing a clean install of Suse and my Windows directory has disappeared altogether. Any chance of getting it back?

I have a friend that tried to change her user password on Windows, and now can't log in to her account. Of course it's the only user account on the computer. Are there system recovery tools on any Linux liveCDs that could change the passwords of Windows user account?
I need to write a batch file for windows that automatically starts the cygwin tool in windows and executes the unix scripts.Previously we had these scripts in unix server. Now we need to migrate them to Windows server. For this reason we are using cygwin tool that allows the scripts to be executed on Windows server. We had written a batch file that starts the cygwin tool, but we were not able to execute the unix scripts. How can we write a batch file such that it executes all the unix scripts in cygwin.
I installed Lucid Lynx a week ago and I have a problem with the notifications. The notifications that appear on the screen stay for a long time, about 10 seconds. How to control these notifications so that I can reduce the time?
I want to pick up an obviously unsolved problem. I have a Samsung Q210 Seven Notebook and recently installed Kubuntu. Everything works fine, as long as I put on my sunglasses when working with the notebook in the evening. Triggering the hotkeys shows an icon with a percentage counter that increases or decreases, depending on which function key I use. Although this looks really nifty, it gets boring after utilizing a few times. And, as you might already think, the brightness doesn't change here...
I found a hint telling to adjust the /etc/default/grub: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset acpi_backlight=vendor"
The only effect this has is that the nice percentage lowering/raising minigame doesn't work anymore
Also, nothing from the suggestions from the previous post work. This is really bad, since that way not only the user's eyes suffer, but also the energy consumption of the display is maximized.
I just recently did a clean install of 10.10. My controller works fine for games no issues there. I haven't done any sort of configuring in order to make my Logitech cordless rubmble pad 2 controller work as a mouse yet it is. It just started this morning when I booted up. I have found many threads on how to make your controller/joystick work as a mouse. But I have yet to find one on how to get it to quit doing so. Or at least how to toggle it on and off which would be better in my case as Ive found in the past 30 min that I like scrolling with the analog stick much better than pgup/dn or the mouse wheel. The main issue is that I have a 4/yo here that plays games all the time and he keeps opening random things when he plays. I also am looking into how to get virtual box to let windows xp detect my controller but I will post that later after I have done more research if I can't figure it out.
Gnome, 10.10 (likely not to upgrade to 11.04), HP-dv7t laptop, intel i7 processor. In my ongoing attempt to create a completely mouseless computing experience (and hopefully, one where I never have to leave the home row) I am currently trying to find a way to control the onscreen cursor with my keyboard.
I have found various solutions, but most of them have problems. The accessibility feature that comes with Ubuntu is (for some reason) not installed on my computer and I can't find the package, but other people who have tried the same thing have said that it is not worth the effort anyway, given that it has nonexistent customization.
This shift-numlock function doesn't work at all. Got info from this thread: ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=926105. Gizmod is incredibly complex and doesn't seem to work all that well with my 64 bit hardware. I worked with it for a few hours. But, anyway, do you have any advice that has not already been posted in the other thread?
After implementing a new protocol on ns2 , I need now to integrate infomation about nodes energy .So I am going to implement a new c++ code to define the model of energy consumption in every node .have you any exemples to help me getting started .
