Fedora Networking :: 14 - Can Set My Box For SSH After Login As Root
Feb 16, 2011
I am running Fedora 14 and can set my box for SSH after I login as root.
My question is I can script this process but how would I enable the root in the script? Also is there any way I can configure this in the OS where when the machine boots up I can log in remote so SSH will always be on.
I am running a Linux box an would like it to act as a server but keep in mind that it wont always be on and I only use it for educational purposes.

I just installed Fedora 12 on a laptop. I changed the default shell on the root account to /bin/tcsh and changed the runlevel to 3 and then rebooted. Now I can't login into the root account: it returns me immediately to the login prompt and I can't see any error message (the screen is cleared).Why is this happening?Can I boot into some sort of safe mode so I can undo my changes to the /etc/inittab and /etc/passwd file?I tried booting with a Live CD with the intention of mounting the filesystem and making the changes, but the new filesystem is a LVM and it won't let me mount it (or I don't know how to mount a Logical Volume).

Just downloaded and installed 14.I have downloaded XAMPP as a user and extracted it to the desktop.Now I need to move it to the opt folder and I cannot do that - insufficient permission. When I try to switch user to root it does not accept the password even though I know I am using the correct pw because I can bring up terminal, do su, enter the pw and get terminal access.How do I log in as root or how do I move the folder to opt as a general user?

Can we log into the gui login screen with root under Fedora 12 because I keep getting an Authentication Failure even when I change the password to a simple password named password? I can login under root in the terminal and when ever it requests the root password in a regular user account.

Well I did something pretty stupid and now I can't log in with my user other than the root user. Basically, I wanted to change my username and so I when to the admin > user & accounts - and selected the account I wanted to change. Anyway I did that and then logged out. Since then all I get when I reseted is a spinning mouse ball and a black screen. I can get into the shell prompt - but I'm not sure how I'd go about fixing this issue I created. At the moment I'm logged in the shell with root, and if I type 'id' I can see my old username, but I think the links behind it are broken.

After upgrading from FC10 to FC12 here I notice I cannot login to the GUO console locally as root, yet this worked with FC10. Attached is my /etc/gdm/custom.conf settings and I've got the login for root set true whih is where it was and working prior to the upgrade.. Also I don't see the shutdown/restart options as before either:
[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=false
AutomaticLogin=
TimedLoginEnable=false
TimedLogin=

I've recently upgraded my hardware. Now, the system boots perfectly fine, but I can't login to the tty as root or any other user. Infact yes, I can login, but as soon as it shows Last Login, it exits and then I'm back to a login prompt. I've successfully booted into single user mode, and changed all the passwords, but still it fails. X doesn't start, although I think it's due to the old xorg.conf having the wrong driver.

After upgrading FEdora 13, user ravi was added. Then after few days neel was added. Both of the users were already existing. So when attempting login to neel, we found that every file is owned by ravi. So we did$chown -R neel:neel But after that problem started and when we rebooted the machin, there were no list of users on login screen. (then I connected to that comp remotely, it worked, but somehow I was not able to switch to root) It says incorrect password (though I new it very well). So I went to maintenance mode and changed the root password, and rebooted. Still problem persists.Now I am not able to login as root (from anywhere, login screen , terminal, remote)No list of usernames on login screen ( but i can choose, other and type login-password)

How to auto-login as root? Our target runlevel is 3. Since Fedora 15 use systemd, it seems that all the tricks I did before with initd are deprecated now. I know it sounds inconsiderate to auto-login as root, but I'm setting up Fedora 15 in a closing environment where convenience tops safety.

I have just upgraded my laptop from F8 to F10, and I am unable to login to the system as root user.At login, it provides 2 options, one is the user I created and another called 'other'.On selecting 'other' and providing uid/passwd as 'root/<rootpassword>, it says "Unable to Authenticate User"!!However, when I tried to access my windows partition, it happily accepted the root password

I have installed Fedora 10 on VmWare. I created another user besides root. I am able to login to that user using GNome login and i can switch to root using "su" command and perform the additional tasks.
Now, for one lab assignment, i need to login as root using GUI. But whenever i am trying to do, I am unable to do that. Is there some additional things that i have to do to login as root from GUI?

In my company, they provide linux machines which has a 4 yr old Gentoo linux. Also the OS is loaded through Yukon PXE/netboot environment, and the users directory is mounted from an network location. Also they dont provide root access in these machines.
I would love to use the latest Ubuntu in this machine. Please let me know if it is possible to configure a ubuntu/xubuntu in this machine. I need to be able to login with my corporate user_id/passwd, because many of the tools use this for authentication. so just doing a ubuntu installation in this machine and mounting the n/w location would not help.
