What is a good Ftp server application (preferably with a GUI interface)? I would like something in which you may set a login password. Also, how would you login to an FTP server which is through a router, as the computer IP address will be assigned now by the router, right? Take Linksys router for example, don't they all assign IP addresses to network computers based on the router IP Address, 192.168.1.100, 192.168.1.200, etc?Since post above, I have installed vsftpd. I cannot figure out, as stated above, how to find the IP address to log into from offsite.
I need to build a 3 node web server cluster to run a php application. Since the app requires users to login (which means a session state is to be maintained), I will be sharing sessions save path, I also need to share the application directory across 3 nodes. I having trouble deciding which cluster file system to select.
I am getting no packages listed in Gnome application manager gpk-application 2.27.2. I have tried 'yum clean all' and get the following error messages.
i have purchased sun server for my visualization project. Request you to help me finding the io for disk .I have put storage(disks) on different location (File Server) and on server (Application) i have configured 4 virtual machines.
How would i monitor the io for file server from the Application server where i have configured 4 virtual machine. one way to mount the file server share on application server and execute
dd if=/dev/zero of=/share/test.out bs=1024 count=1024 to check the read and write Is there any other way of doing this.
I have a web application(java 5, mysql server) installed on Tomcat on Red Hat 5.Part of the functionality is to allow the upload of files to a windows share. I have mounted the share using theAny file I create here from the terminal gets sions."-rwxrwxrwx"The problem is that when the application server creates the file it gets created with the following."-rw-r--r--"How can I get files created from the server to be "-rwxrwxrwx"

I am trying to make an application server that would contain simple ones like edit, openoffice, gimp, so on and so forth. I know how to access these using ssh but what I want is that the application runs on that server as it already does, but to open local files and save them locally.
We are trying to define an appliance for an application server so I would like to know which should be the best file system type for this kind of use, basically our web applications uses libraries of 50 KB and our web apps.creates temp and logs files not bigger than 3 MB.
We recently shifted our applcation and database to LINUX from UNIX.so now application server(weblogic 8.1) is on linux and oracle database 9i is on linux.previously there is a process in application server(which access the Database dor the data) which took only 1 hour to run on UNIX after shifting to LINUX the same process is taking 4 to 5 hours to run.
but when individually ran the queries on the database it is quck than UNIX.our ADMIN tried changing the kernel parameters for the database server, but it is still the same.
I am currently running Ubuntu version 10 as a desktop workstation. I would like to run a Linux O/S as a server, either as a application server or an web server. Can I do this effectively with Unbuntu?
We are trying to define an appliance based on Suse for an application server and Web server Apache, so we would like to know configuration best practices for network and security, is there any paper/doc about best practices?
Im creating a PHP application for my company. The application its going to be used by around 500 people in the network. I've always used Windows Server for my PHP applications, but I want to start using linux. I've heard its faster and more secure.
I want to knwo, what type of computer should I use? Is does linux work better on Intel Xeon or AMD? I need the application to work fast.
Am I going to have any problems with incompatibility if I get a Dell server?
I've used Ubuntu, just to check it out, but I've heard Centos is better for web servers, is that true?
Is it possible to hide cpu cores from an application?
I am running RHEL 5.5 on a Sun 4450 with 24 cores. We use Sybase database. Licensing for Sybase is by core. I would like to restrict Sybase to using 8 of the 24 cores and allow other apps on the system to use the rest of the cores. I want to reserve 8 cores for Sybase use only and Sybase only has access to those 8 cores.
now I have managed my rsyslogd to log the firewall into a separate file I would like to use a script which looks into this file for intruders which for example try to ping, telnet, ssh, rdp etc into my dsl connection. And then use a kind of app or firewall on my ubuntu server to block them.Yes my firewall logs them but does not block them if the policy is enabled, so they have access on through the firewall and the connect to my server but I only want some known IP addresses have access through it and this I cannot program in the firewall so I have to use some extras.Or am I thinking way to far and is there a better solution with IPtables or app?Is it possible to watch tcp connections between the firewall from outside IP addresses and the ubuntu server?
I have multiple locations that I have a Serial-to-Ethernet devices. Right now, I have these devices set up as TCP Server (on the device), but would like to change them to TCP Client. My question is, if doing this, what application is used on Linux to act as a TCP Server? The TCP Client will send the data to a IP Address and Port number, and I would like for Linux to accept the connections. I then have another application running that will grab that data. Is this something easy to do
I hope this post is in the right area of the forum.I am searching for the right operating system and application(s) to build a cloud data storage server business like Backblaze.Backblaze uses Debian but uses their own custom application to manage the data, uploads, accounts, encryption, etc... So my real question here is: does anyone have any recommendations for existing application(s) I could use on top of Debian to handle this stuff?
I have installed and setup Postfix.I have tested Postfix by sending and receiving mail with it.I can see the mail has landed in /var/mail.I will have to setup an IMAP server to deliver the mail to my mail client, Thunderbird.I love easy to use software that is very easy to setup. What recommendations do people have for selecting an IMAP server application?
I have written a simple server application (with an HTTP interface). I want to ensure that only calls from the local machine are processed - i.e. I want to prevent outsiders from accessing/using my server.
How may I restrict outsiders (i.e. requests from remote machines)?
I'd like to set up my Linux box so that I can access its GUI applications from an older Mac laptop running OS X 10.5 on the local LAN and away from home (over the internet).I know the traditional way to do this is with an X session (& Mac OS X has an X window client included), but does this offer the best performance, especially over the internet? Would I be better to install some sort of RDP server? I've used VNC in the past, but performance has been pretty slow and ideally I'd like the remote apps to show up seamlessly (more efficient use of screen real estate).
I have installed websphere application server community edition from ubuntu software center. Now whenever i tries to execute the file "startup.sh" (which is the file to start websphere server) i receive following error.
Quote: Neither the JAVA_HOME nor the JRE_HOME environment variable is defined. At least one of these environment variable is needed to run this program. Now i searched web & find out the way to set JAVA_HOME environment variable which is according to my knowledge done by following command.
I've been trying to make a cgi script that starts a program on a server and then shows the program on the servers screen. The cgi script is written in perl. I've been successful in making the program showing up on the screen through ssh by setting $DISPLAY to :0.0, I tried setting it to this in /etc/profile but when the cgi script ran nothing showed up on the screen. I tried having the script running it as a local user with "su - [user] -c [command]", this didn't help either.
In short what I'm trying to accomplish. When I press a button on a web page an slide show is supposed to start on a screen connected to the server.
I have 2 LANs in my network. They are: LAN 1: 192.168.0.0 LAN 2: 192.168.1.0 Both LANs, communicate with each other. And both have an application server. In LAN1, I can access the web server, internal and external. At LAN2, only works on the internal network. The rule that I'm using is as follows: iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -d my_ip --dport 80 -j DNAT --to 192.168.1.254:80
This rule works for LAN1, but not for LAN2. Anyone know what that is can be lockin access?
Recently i am install webalizer in my application server .i am using centos4.1 .i installed successfully.but when i run the command i am getting like this.

I am looking for an equivalent software of Microsoft Exchange server. Right now we are using MS Exchange Server with 40 users. Can I transfer this setup to any equivalent RHEL programs? Is There A Linux Equivalent To Microsoft Exchange?
I have servers where the disk is partitioned into OS and application partitions. The application is rather sloppy with its file handles, and frequently when there is a system crash, its file systems get corrupted. This will cause fsck to halt the boot, requiring me to get on a remote console, enter the root password, and fsck the file systems.
Is there a way to have just the OS partitions get checked and mounted, then check the application systems, only after the OS is loaded, so I can ssh into the system, instead of having to use a bandwidth-hogging remote console?
The app partitions are already at fsck level 2 in /etc/fstab, but this doesn't prevent OS loading from halting. If I set the fsck level to 0, I don't want the application to start if the partitions are unavailable. Should I just leave the fsck level at 0? Or should have the partitions marked "noauto", then have a startup script run fsck and mount the app partitions?
