I have the latest RHEL 5.2 using XEN virtualization. I created several HVM windows w2k3 guests.I see only one CPU for each w2k3 guest. I configured the guest properly using parameter vcpus = 2 When i use xm I see that VCPUs are already allocated but the second one is paused:

I have windows vista 32bit oem that originally came with DELL system when I bought new. On the PC, MS$ sticker has the product key for windows vista.When I reformatted the disk and re-install windows vista natively on the machine for which it was licensed, it got automatically activated and passed MS$ genuine check. But I got into problems when using windows vista as guest os from fedora 13 host os using virtualbox on exactly same machine for which vista is licensed for. I go that MS$ : x -days to automatic activation, activate now link. Clicking on activate now it says invalid product key even I entered correct product key as it is on the PC.
I tried to create new windwos vista guest os 2 ways:
1) using existing native installation of windows vista by using vmware converter to create vmware disk image of the running windows vista and shutting down and log back into fedora 13 used this disk image as the storage in virtualbox and create windows vista guest. It starts up ok except for that activation issue.
2) using the windows vista dvd and using that as the source for new windows vista installation in virtualbox. All fine except got that activation issue.After killing my 2 days just for this I dont know whats next. Does that not make sense that I have a license for using windows vista on this specific pc, I am entitled to install it on that same pc as virtual or native or even both ways ?

My native installation was updated to service pack 2 and I also updated the fresh dvd install of windows vista in virtualbox to service pack 1 and then service pack 2 but still no effect in regard to license activation.Did any one solved the problem in some way regarding this issue for windows vista, I would like to know.
My company's default OS is Windows 7. I convinced my manager so that I could use Fedora 12, since I am mostly familiar with development environment in Fedora. However there are a few things I need in Windows 7, and I want to stop going back and forth in two OS'es in dual boot-up setting.
I've searched online for easy way to use the existing Windows 7 as guest virtual machine. I first tried VMware's Vcenter Converter Standalone in Windows 7, but it failed with some error code, and searching the particular error code didn't turn up any solution. I also tried to use Sun's VirtualBox, but I get segmentation fault error in Fedora. I tried to see if VMware server has a tool, but installation exists with an error, and searching the web for the error code didn't turn up anything either.... I wonder if I am having this much difficulties because I am using x86_64 version of OS'es.
Anyhow, if anyone has done it successfully - using existing Windows 7 as guest virtual machine in x86_64 version of Fedora 12.
I have a local file server running Samba on Fedora 9. It's already configured and serves a few people without any problems. I am now trying to set up a new read-only share with the username 'guest' and the password 'guest'. However, with no success so far! If I log on as 'guest' with the password 'guest' like so:

I installed a Fedora 14 guest on a Fedora 14 host with Virtualbox, then i run these commands on the guest:yum install kernel-devel kernel-headersbut if i try to install the virtualbox-guest additions on the guest, is still complains about that it's unable to find the kernel source directory?Ha anyone succeded installing the guest additions on a guest Fedora 14?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI had a lot of trouble installing Guest Additions within the Fedora 13 Guest on a Linux host. I had to mount the vboxGuestadditions.iso from the Device --> CD/DVD Devices menu. Then I located the appropriate package for my system. In my case it was the AMD64 Linux version.I ran this as administrator in Terminal. I used the "bash" command followed by the package name. This was after CDing the the appropriate directory. The packaged installed, I then rebooted and it worked fine. (Something that would make this easier is to load a script into nautilus that would allow me to open a locatation as administartor at the open window. I'm sure there is something in Fedora to do this but I couldn't find it in a hurry so I used the command line way).
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an Ubuntu guest installed on Virtualbox 4.0.4 running on Windows 7 Home Premium. I have two firewall rules for Vbox which allow any, any inbound for both TCP and UDP and those rules have edge traversal enabled. I have host ports 9080 and 9022 forwarded to 80 and 22 on the guest. The Win7 box is on an Ethernet connection
After some testing, I have a netbook with a Wifi connection and Ubuntu netbook remix which cannot make an ssh connection to the Ubuntu guest.
But, the same netbook can telnet to port 9080 on the Win7 machine's address and successfully connect to a web server running on port 80 of the Ubuntu guest.
In order to check this out, I ran initctl stop ssh on the Ubuntu guest, verified thagt port 22 had no listeners, and ran ssh with /usr/sbin/sshd -d -e. This shows various bits of debug info from the console. Then I ran Putty on the win7 machine to connect to port 9022 on it's own IP address (that it got from DHCP) and made a successful connection to the guest Ubuntu.
The variable that I don't know much about is the landlord's cable router setup, but I can't figure out why that would block packets to 9022 but not packets to 9080.
I have Linux installed on my harddrive, sometimes I run it as the host operating system and sometimes run it as a guest in Windows using VirtualBox. It's a nice ability, I think.
I don't think it's possible with Windows though. Is it because your average distribution includes drivers for everything known to man? Are devices/drivers configured statically in Windows so when somethings changed it breaks?
I am using virtualbox 3.2.4 (virtualbox host only network (NAT)) on Windows XP Host and an ubuntu 10.04 guest. Recently installed vsFTPd on ubuntu guest and I am able to FTP from ubuntu to localhost. But when I try from the windows host I got an unknown connect error. I try with anonymous users enabled too.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 10.10 desktop in a VirtualBox VM on a Windows 2008 host machine. The end goal is join the the Ubuntu VM to a Windows 2008 domain. I've downloaded likewilikewise-open_5.4.0.42111-2ubuntu1.2_i386.deb se-open_5.4.0.42111-2ubuntu1.2_i386.deb to get the joining of the VM to the domain. But from this point forward, I'm completely lost.
1) How do I implement this likewise package?
2) How do I get files from my Windows 2008 host to the Ubuntu guest VM?
The likewise file is burned to a DVD. When I try to read the DVD, I get the "My Disk" icon but only one file gets displayed. In other words, the DVD the likewise file is burned to has a ton of files. Ubuntu doesn't see any of them expect one .exe file. The /etc/fstab had no entry for cdrom, so I put a line in that says
/dev/hdc /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0 rebooted and that didn't do squat. There is no entry /etc/cdrom but there is directory /etc/My Disc. And I suppose that's what gets mounted because I can see one file on that disc. So then I thought, to hell with the DVD drive and I'll just get the Linux guest to see a "shared drive" on the host. I shared out a folder on the host via the Virtualbox "shared folders". But how I get the Ubuntu guest to see this shared folder is as big a mystery to me as is the creation of life.

I am using my mobile Nokia 6600 via bluetooth which unfortunately isnt supported by Ubuntu .
There have been many blogs and threads on the net to fix this issue but none worked for me.
So i tried to use virtual box 3.2.12 in Ubuntu to check whether Windows XP Pro can access net from my cell via bluetooth.
It worked!!!!! But my basic intention to get net in ubuntu was to install some really good softwares in ubuntu Software centre which otherwise require downloading of lot of .deb dependencies manually.

I have a Ubuntu hosting a Windows XP box (using VirtualBox). The Windows XP box is connected to work using Check Point VPN-1. Essentially this enables me to go to my Windows box and do something like ping comp-at-work and it just works.
I would like to access the VPN resources from the Linux host though. The Windows guest is only there because the VPN client isn't working in Linux. If I could somehow ssh from the Linux host right into my computer at work (using remote desktop would also be great), that would save me a lot of round trips between my Linux host and the Windows guest.
I have RHEL running in Virtual Box and my native OS is Win 7. From a purely educational standpoint, I want to be able to access RHEL from Win 7 over SSH. I download putty but don;t know how to make it do what I want. Ideally, I would like to use the linux command prompt at a minimum and preferably access the GUI apps also. IS this possible? I am just trying to explore and expand my linux knowledge.

Though, I mainly use Linux for development activities and I don't want to move them to Windows. For this reason I decided to use a Windows guest on VirtualBox for internet access and the Linux host for the other stuffs, but I'd greatly prefer to use Linux for everything (internet too) and Windows only as internet gateway.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWe had an old Windows XP server running a Filemaker database on a 2.6 GHz Intel CPU, but that server died. It's been replaced by a box with two 2.4 GHz Xeon CPUs and 5 GB of RAM that's running Ubuntu 11.04 natively, and Windows is running as a VirtualBox guest. 2GB of RAM has been dedicated to the Windows guest.Of course, these old Xeon CPUs don't have the VT-x extensions, so I wouldn't expect to be able to add CPUs to the VirtualBox guest, but the Filemaker database is running at least 2-3x slower than it did on the old server. I would expect that utilizing one 2.4GHz CPU out of four available shouldn't result in such an astounding difference.
I would also like to be able to continue using this setup, since it would also mean we'd be able to remove our Linux server from the rack, which is running on even slower hardware (not that the system requirements are high for its job though).So my question is: Why is this so slow? Is there anything I can do to change the situation? Or should I just give up now and find more suitable hardware?I understand that the "new" machine should be about 1% slower in theory, so please don't tell me this "should" be fine. I need more concrete answers (as in, "I've tried this before and you should do X") since in the real world, it appears to be about 50% slower. I'm about to blame "virtual" CPUs to multithreading on single core processors, and possibly the difference in CPU architecture between Xeon and Pentium 4 CPUs.
I am new to linux, it was nice to work with linux on virtual machine, but suddenly yesterday when I try to connect using putty from my windowsxp machine its showing network connection error. I dont know what happened. In linux machine ifconfig shows only 127.0.0.1, could not trace problem, guide me to trace the problem.
Previously it used to give 192.168.1.2/192.168.1.3 it used to vary every boot. FTP also stopped working. I am clueless. My system setup:

1 - Set up a Virtual Machine and install OpenSUSE 11.2
2 - Create a shared folder on host (HostFolder)
3 - Setup the shared folder in Virtualbox Via the Virtual Machine details or via Devices > Shared Folders...
4 - Install dependencies for running the Virtualbox installer You need to install the right development kernelpackage for your machinetype (use 'zypper search -i kernel' to see what's installed) sudo zypper make gcc kernel-source kernel-hosttype/default-devel
5 - Run the Virtual Machine and go to Devices > Guest Additions This mounts an iso image in your OpenSUSE guest.
6 - Open a root terminal and run
cd /usr/src/linux
make oldconfig && make prepare && make scripts && make dep
cp ../linux-obj/$HOSTTYPE/default/Module.symvers .
make prepare

9 - Test with sudo mount -t vboxsf HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder It works? Great! Let's set up the system so it automounts for your regular useraccount instead of root-only access.
10 - Add this line to /etc/fstab HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder vboxsf defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0
11 - It works for me but if it still doesn't automount after a reboot; sudo mount -a

VMWare reports that usbmuxd running on the host machine (opensuse) must first release the usb port so that vmware can open it in the guest (XP) vm. VMWare knows that I have physically connected an ipad and when I click "Connect" reports the error and then displays the port as "Connected" although according to ITunes diagnostics there is no such connection. I have the same problem connecting a usb flash drive to the guest vm. Is there a way I can manually disconnect the port from the opensuse host?

The problem only happens after I close terminal. The individual program or software works fine. But as long as I use terminal, and close it, then the desktop environment freeze.
Is there anyone encountering the same problem, and how can I resolve it ?

I have annoying problem. My setup is the following: debian Linux, 64 bits, VMWare workstation 7 host, with Windows XP running as guest. From Firefox, or Internet Explorer, I am unable to access few sites, for example nvidia.com, osdir. Basically get connection timed out, on the other hand ping works to those sites. Moreover, Slashdot loads very very slow and sometimes gets horrible text-only version.

I suspect it has something to do with routing on Linux, I recall having similar problem long time ago, which was fixed by setting something in /proc.
I tried setting MTU and TCP window size on Windows lower, but did not help
I'm looking for virtual machine software that supports dual monitors on a Linux guest with a Windows 7 host.VirtualBox supports dual monitors only for Windows guests. VMware Player was extremely slow, so I gave up. I'm not sure it supports dual monitors, anyway. Can anyone recommend a product for what I want to do?

I read in these two links: here and here that it's possible to do this using Samba, but I am a little bit lost and need more information on how to proceed.
So far, I managed to set up two network adapters (one NAT and one host-only) and to install Samba on the Linux guest, but I have the following questions now: What do I need to type in samba.conf to share a folder from the Linux guest? (the tutorial provided in one of the links above only explains how to share home directories) Are there any Samba commands that I need to run on the guest to enable sharing? How do I make sure that these folders are only available to the host OS and not on the Internet? Once the Linux guest is setup, how do I access each of the individual shared folders from the Windows host? I read that I need to mount a drive on Windows to do this, but do I use Samba logins, or Linux logins, also do I use localhost? or do I need to set up an IP for this?
