Security :: How To Configure Guest Account (for Computer Repair)
Jan 26, 2011
I spill my soda on my keyboard and ended up in a 4 day war with my pc.Now my tab, capslock, left shift, and down vol no longer works. I'm going to take it into the shop in the next couple of days to probably replace the keyboard. (If only lenovo kept the easy access keyboards like ibm had on the thinkpads). Something tells me that they will want to log in and test out the keyboard. So I created a guest account with a simple password. I changed my normal user home dir to 770 permissions and changed guest's shell to /bin/rbash. (both found in other posts.) Is there anything else I should do to secure the computer while it is in the shop?[I use su, sudo isn't configured to work (its a dependency so I can't uninstall)]. I have a pretty decent root password.

I am trying to use a guest account in Ubuntu 10.10 however I am unable to stop the guest account from authenticating as a superuser and gaining root permissions dispite removing all permissions from the user-group control panel. The new guest account I created is not part of the admin group. However, with my new guest account I am unable to start a guest session from the panel, AND if I use the guest session from the panel I dont have the problem with the guest session being able to authenticate. How do I prevent super user authentication from an account in this situation? It seems that any account can authenticate and my /etc/sudoers file looks like this:
# /etc/sudoers
#
# This file MUST be edited with the 'visudo' command as root.
#
# See the man page for details on how to write a sudoers file.
#
Defaults env_reset
# Host alias specification
# User alias specification
# Cmnd alias specification
# User privilege specification
root ALL=(ALL) ALL
# Allow members of group sudo to execute any command
# (Note that later entries override this, so you might need to move
# it further down)
%sudo ALL=(ALL) ALL
#
#includedir /etc/sudoers.d
# Members of the admin group may gain root privileges
%admin ALL=(ALL) ALL

I have a local file server running Samba on Fedora 9. It's already configured and serves a few people without any problems. I am now trying to set up a new read-only share with the username 'guest' and the password 'guest'. However, with no success so far! If I log on as 'guest' with the password 'guest' like so:
Code:
su - guest
No problem. Once logged in, if I try:
Code:
smbclient //samba/share
I'm prompted for a password. If I enter 'guest' I get:
Code:
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE
If I enter nothing (null) I get:
Code:
Anonymous login successful
Domain=[RIVER] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.2.8-0.26.fc9]
tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE

Is there any way to access the guest account without having to go through the Gnome Panel? I'm using Cairo-Dock and disabled the Gnome Panels since it just gets in the way, but the only way I know to get access to the guest account is through gnome panel.

I got my laptop repaired (by the manufacturer). Linux would install fine before, but not now, as all I get is a black screen with a blinking cursor. Note, I've only tried KDE versions of software since my laptop came back, so I don't know if that's the problem. I tried linux mint 9 and kubuntu 10.04. And all I get after a while is described above. I also tried some different install options, because I'm able to get to the menu to choose which type of install I want, but the other options led to the same thing, and it would sometimes display a bunch of numbers and then "EH ok" or something. the numbers on the left keep increasing, and eventually I get to the splash screen, where it freezes, and repeats the process.

I like very much the Guest Session feature of Karmic, it comes very handy when someone needs to use your computer. However, it's only available if I'm already logged in, it won't show this option at login screen. Is there any way to make this possible? Also, I once tried the guest session and configured its appearance to my taste. The next time I entered, though, the default desktop reappeared. I know this happens because no setting is permanently stored for this session, so the only solution I can think of is to change the default configuration it is loaded from.

I am posting this in the "Desktop Environments" section on the theory that the VirtualBox is indeed a desktop environment.
Bottom lines first - maybe it will make the whole essay below superfluous. Do I need to use the Windows-7 installation disk to install the "guest" OS into this virtual box? (This is the main question.) I suspect it is, after the prompts I get trying to run my guest OS for the first time. Since I have a dual-boot anyway - with Win-7 as the main OS on the machine - is there any way I can configure Virtualbox to use the existing Win-7 installation as a guest OS, without damaging the Windows partitions?
Now the rest of the story:
I just deleted about 100 lines of torturous details, realizing nobody will want to read through all that. 1. Question 2 is optional - I have a 400GB mounted file system on a huge Seagate drive for my guest "hard drive".

I am probably in the wrong post / tread/ whatever. But maybe someone can put me on the right track.
I try to configure evolution on my opensuse, for using my outlook account. I tryed a lot, and tryed to understand a lot, but all seems to be very diffucult.
What I completely miss on the internet / documentation / everywhere is what to enter where. I can open in my outlook, the account settings. But names there, are not the same names in evolution.
And what to use, mapi, imapi mapi+ whatever. I have no clue about that.
What I found today, is something about proxy. since I was unable to ping a server host with a very strange name. NLCLUEXA11.connect1.local But I also have somewhere a exchange proxy.
Whith a https://www..... url ?? and an NTLM Authentication, no idea about that.
There is also an web interface, webclient, but that also seems to go wrong.
Is there any simple explanation, or just a simple tutorial, which show the outlook settings, and where to put them in the evolution settings ??

I am not getting very good sound from skype. I wondered if Ekiga was better than skype so I have:
Installed it.
Obtained a sip address.
adjusted the ports on my router as below
set up the user by way of the configuration assistant.
And still I see nothing and hear nil. I am not getting an error message. When I run the test address it immediately reports it is done. I set up the H232 account.
Each of the following port ranges were translated to the same ranges:
TCP 1720-1720
UDP 5000-5100
TCP 30000-30000
What have I left out of the configuration?

I have an encrypted /home partition but would like to set up a guest account for my brother. Obviously, encryption doesn't work so well when you give out the key so what I'd like to do is specify a different, unencrypted location as a home directory for the guest account so he doesn't need access to that partition. Is there a way of doing this?
I've got fedora 10, dual boot with windows, 2 hard drives, 1st is NTFS windows. 2nd is split into a swap, ext3 for the OS, and an encrypted partition for /home.

so, sometimes happen that while I'm on my pc comes my mom and say "can I look a things 10 minutes?", this means that I have to leave my computer in her hands for ten minutes... enough to make something wrong! In ubuntu there is a usefull button "start guest session"..but here in fedora I can't find it...So, I create a new user and I called it "Guest" and I eliminated the password, so they can access also without me... but I have some problem:a) I set the home directory of this guest in /tmp/guest thinking that in this way everytime the home directory will be clean... but this doesn't work...b) is there a way to prevent in all cases this account to autenticate as root? So, if they try to install something it hasn't to show the box "autenticate as root", it has to say only "you can't"

one thing i can't seem to be able to do is give the guest account just these permissions: using firefox (or other browser) and using one file directory and using a text editor. means the guest can browse the net and sefe some infos form that - nothing more. the previous version had something like that, it was really easy for me, a noob, to do it with two or three clicks. if this possibiility exists, what to do. if it's not implemented... maybe it should be. 'cause many people let others use the computer but don't want any complications...

I noticed (the hard way) that enabling a guest session under 9.04 does not lock the source user. I enabled a guest session for someone and came back to find them rooting through my files. By quitting the guest session, it goes back to the source user's desktop without requiring a password. Shouldnt it go to gnome-screensaver automatically? Can this be changed? Is it a bug?
to replicate: log into source user's account use the menu to start a guest session quit the guest session root through files un-opposed.

Is it possible to have two passwords associated with one account, one that is the actual one, and another one, a duress password, that upon entering gives a similar (desktop) environment with "decoy data"?
The idea is to have the bogus password go to an encrypted home drive that looks as if it were the real deal, but it is wiping particular sensitive (encrypted) data that is visible only with the real password in the background, so that the actual data that need to be protected are not compromised. While the person who unlocked the computer tries to find the information on it between all the rubbish files, the real files are securely wiped. The files are very sensitive in nature, so it's better to have then destroyed than have unauthorized people access them, in the event of that happening.
I happen to know that TrueCrypt has a similar option but that requires an entire decoy operating system (and I think that might be a bit conspicuous), but is there a native linux way to do it?

Basically in addition to the first installation account on my system (my account) ive also set up another user alongside my own. Its not a admin account but 'desktop user' account but in the group id section this account comes as '1001'-what does this 1001 mean? Furthermore are there any risks i should know about arising from setting up another account on my pc?

I started up my computer and suddenly, I saw that there was a new user account. I didn't create it and no one else uses my computer (let alone has access to user account creations). It was called dtc. It didn't seem to have any privileges and the only file in its home folder was called Examples. Should I worry that I might have some kind of malware? I deleted the user and the folder (and it came back after a while). It's main group is dtcgrp. The User ID is 1004.
