Red Hat / Fedora :: RHEL6 Login Banner With Cancel Button Not Working
Jan 25, 2011
Having a little issue with creating a login message banner in RHEL6 that uses two buttons. One for Accept which logs the user in. The second for Cancel which immediately logs the user out. I've modified the /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default file to have the script, posted below, and it worked perfectly fine in RHEL5. But in 6, when you click Cancel, the user is still able to log in. It even states in the system logs that the user cancelled the login. As you can see, I have the script using the 9th field of the user's env to get the PID, and using the kill command to end the process, which should be logging the user out right away if they click the Cancel button. This works in 5 without issue (though I used -f5 in RHEL5, had to move it to -f9 for RHEL6).

I'm trying to secure a workstation according to the DISA STIG and updated this machine from f10 to f12 to take care of a lot of kernel and openssl vulnerabilities.
I've gone into the Login Manager by running /usr/bin/kcmshell4 kdm --lang en_US as root, turned off themed greeter to enable the Dialog tab and inserted the login banner in the Greeting field. I checked the Xresources file in both /etc/kde/kdm and /etc/X11/xdm and the xlogin*greeting: field has my banner.
However when I restart the machine I am not prompted by the banner and when I select a user I am not prompted by the banner.
I'm not sure if this could be the issue but I get errors when launching kcmshell4:
Quote:
I have to sudo -s from the user with uid 1003 to root. does this need to be run from real root?

With the new changes to RHEL 6, and it being more inline with Fedora, how do you change the login screen background? I'm talking about the main login screen, not after you have logged in and need to change the desktop background. We use a custom background for machines in our lab, and need to implement this on 6.

I'm using Fedora 12 with LXDE (sudo yum groupinstall LXDE if you want to try it), and while using LXDE rather than GNOME, the power button doesn't do anything. I found a possible solution here: [URL] but I have no /etc/acpi/ folder. Why is that? Package acpid is needed.

My F12 is connected to a Xerox DC432 printer on the network. The problem I'm facing is that banner sheet cannot be disable. The configuration setting on Administration->Printing showed that banner is off by default. "/etc/cups/printers.conf" file also have "JobSheets none none". I had the same problem with F11. Is there any step I'm missing? It doesn't seem to be problem of the printer itself because I could do this on a Windows OS.

my Fedora 12 does fsck on boot time to time and sometimes it's really annoying having to wait for the check to complete. In Linux Mint pressing <Esc> cancelled the check; however in Fedora this does not work (nor does Ctrl+C nor anything other I've tried). What is the key to cancel the check in Fedora?

I followed the sticky about setting up wireless and I have come to an issue where the WLAN switch which is on this computer can be pressed, the light comes on, but no WLAN. When I looked in dmesg, this is what I get:
ipw2100: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Connection
firmware: requesting ipw2100-1.3.fw
eth0: Radio is disabled by RF switch.
When running iwconfig wlan0 heres what I get:
home/j-dub # iwconfig eth0
wlan0 unassociated ESSID off/any Nickname:"ipw2100"
Mode:Managed Channel=0 Access Point: Not-Associated
[code]....
Notice it says that the 'Radio is disabled by switch' in dmesg. I can press that switch until the end of the world comes and it does absolutely nothing but make the WLAN light put on a light show. And it shows the wlan to be unassociated with any clients. So, what are my options to get this Wireless up and working?
Computer/OS info:
Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M7400

In Fedora 13 64 bit, Ctrl+C does not terminate the running programing in terminal window but in Unbuntu this shortcut key works. If I hit Ctrl+Z, this makes the running program run in background which is something I definitely dont want. what is the shortcut for terminating a program in terminal window? What is the shortcut key for canceling the command I have typed but not run yet no matter where the cursor is in the command ? Ctrl+U works but only if cursor is at the last character of the command.

I have lost my ability in KDE Menus to do a shutdown or restart. My only option is to logoff or cancel. This started occurring about 2 weeks ago, possibly 2 KDE workspace updates ago. I have been assuming it would get fixed with an update but so far it has not.
I am running Fedora 10 x86_64, kernel = 2.6.27.7-134.fc10.x86_64, and the KDE version is:
kde-filesystem.noarch 4-20.fc10 installed
kde-settings.noarch 4.1-4.20081031svn.fc10 installed
kde-settings-kdm.noarch 4.1-4.20081031svn.fc10 installed
code....
I have 3 different systems all running the same OS and KDE versions and it is happening on all 3 systems. All systems have the "Offer Shutdown Options" selected in Session Manager. I have even turned this option off, rebooted, and then back on to try to jumpstart it but that did not work.
Additionally, I have tried deleting the contents of the /tmp directory while in single-user mode and also the .kde under my home directory. This made no difference.
Another symptom I am noticing is that any desktop widgets that I create all get moved to the upper left-hand corner of the display whenever I reboot and log back in. Any extra shortcut widgets that I add to the panel are also gone the next time I log in.
Again, these same symptoms are occurring on 3 different machines.
These symptom do not occur after a fresh install of FC 10. It is breaking during one of the yum updates but I have not narrowed it down yet as to which update is causing this to happen.

I am looking to install RHEL 6 over the network. I havent done any kind of installation before, so this is proving to be an uphill task ergoI just registered on this forum.I'll first let you know what i have:1. I have an RHEL 6 image on one machine and on the same machine I also have a DHCP server ( but am not sure if I have a TFTP server as well - anyway to check ?)What I need:
I need to install RHEL 6 on another machine using the image on the earlier mentioned machine. I have come across many links on my searches online which cover the theoritical aspects which mentions the use of "kickstart" file which once transfered to my client-machine has to be run to install RHEL on my client.. But my problem is, I am unable to find any place which gives a sequence of steps or commands to follow which will help me install this... Can you please guide on how i can go about this

I have recently installed RHEL6 BETA on my desktop. the login page is somewhat different from RHEL5.4. I can see 3 option
1) Log into session with smart card authentication
2) Log into session with fingreprint
3) Log into session with username & password.
By default only first option is active. If I press cancel, then only I can get the options for user & other. Then if I am selecting my user account and giving the password, nothing is coming. The screen is just flicking & coming back to original. No authentication failure can be seen.

I am new to Linux platform and have installed RHEL 6 on my computer. I have gone through different posts on websites regarding how to mount windows drive on to the Linux file system. Here are few results of my trial where results are slightly overwhelming for a guy like me:
1. Mounting NTFS file system using mount commandAs a su-)
" $mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /media/MyFilesystem"
Output: error: unrecognised file system ntfs
2. I followed step by step instructions of installing Fuse and ntfs-3g_ntfsprogs but had no luck:
while using this command for the installation of for FUSE-0.9(which I guess prepares files for installation) I am getting this error :
" Command use: ./configure --exec-prefix=/; make;make install"
Error: "Checking Kernel source directory.../usr.src/kernels/2.6.32-71.e16.x86_64...Checking Kernel source version.......Not found "
Configure error: cannot determine the version of the Linux kernel source. Please configure the kernel before running this script.
Woooh , as u can see my Linux version is mentioned in that message so can anyone lemme know whether this issue is because of the incompatibility of Fuse with my version of Linux or am I suppose to make some changes in the command itself.

I am using a wireless usb device to connect to my router and the make/model of the device is Edimax 7717Un. Drivers for Linux came with the CD and I tried to follow the Read me .sta but I cannot understand few things.
1 When I tried to compile the code by using $make command the code is getting compiled with some errors which are mentioned below:
_Linux_STA_V2.1.2.0/os/linux/../../os/linux/rt_linux.c:1508: error: 'struct net_device' has no member named 'open'
/root/Desktop/LIN_FILES/2009_0521_RT2870_Linux_STA_V2.1.2.0/os/linux/../../os/linux/rt_linux.c:1509: error: 'struct net_device' has no member named 'stop'
[Code].....
if there is way of installing the driver for my make and model in RHEL 6.0 or is there anything I can do( which I think would be slightly too much for me) in this circumstances. I am attaching README.STA and the MAKE file with this post .

I have a Fedora 12 server that I've been using as a server for the past few months. Everything has been going ok. I built it to be used as a home theater PC as well as a proxy server (for when I need to use public wifi) and file server for my home network, nothing too complicated. I wanted to watch some stuff on the server, and needed to change the graphics to the nvidia proprietary driver. I did it just as I've done it on my desktop and laptop, by adding "rdblacklist=nouveau" to the end of the kernel line in grub, rebooting, and installing the kmod-nvidia from rpmfusion's yum repo. When I did so, it updated my kernel to the latest version, along with some other stuff that I didn't pay much attention to.
Before I rebooted, I changed my default runlevel to 3. When it came back, I couldn't login. None of my userIDs (to include root) were working. I rebooted into single user mode, and tried to reset my passwords ...... no userIDs were recognized, not even root. I checked /etc/passwd, shadow, group, gshadow, nsswitch.conf, all files were there, all had proper permissions (as far as I know) and all seemed intact and contained what they should. None of my pam files look like they were mangled, but it is just not recognizing userIDs. Even when I boot up regularly into level 3, processes like SSH say "error, unrecognized user ssh" or something like that.I've checked everything I could think of, nothing makes sense to me. I was going to try to run yum update, hoping that updating everything would fix it, but I can't get the network working in single user mode, and I can't login on anything highger. I tried attaching the hard drive (it's external) to my desktop, chrooting, and running yum update, but my server is running i686, my desktop is running x86_64. When I tried updating, it tried to install a slew of 64 bit rpms.

I'm migrating my file server from Fedora 9 to Fedora 11 (clean install), and I'm having a horrendous time trying to get key based SSH logins working. I've set it up before, and I can't figure out why it won't work now. I copied my public key into ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2 and set the folder permissions for 700 and the file permissions for 600. Then I restarted sshd. Now unless I remember wrong I thought that's all you have to do. It didn't work. So I rebooted just for good measure. Still didn't work. So I made sure that my client was still sane. I can log into my OpenBSD machine just fine. I compared the sshd_config from OpenBSD to the Fedora one, and the options seem pretty close.
At that point I had nothing to lose and just started messing with the Fedora sshd_config. I also noticed in the config that the commented AuthorizedKeys file had dropped the 2 off the end, so I tried changing that as well. Still nothing. Password based logins work, but I really don't want to go that route. Now I can only think of two possibilities. One, some sshd_config setting is wrong and I don't know what it is. Two, there's some package that's required for key based logins that I accidentally unchecked during the install process. That's about all I can come up with. Here's my sshd_config, I tried to just set everything back to default.
Code:
#Port 22
#AddressFamily any
#ListenAddress 0.0.0.0
#ListenAddress ::
# Disable legacy (protocol version 1) support in the server for new
# installations. In future the default will change to require explicit
# activation of protocol 1
Protocol 2 .....

I think this goes in this subforum, but I'm not sure. I am using Mandriva 2010 KDE 4.3 I have a Toshiba Satellite with 7 "special" buttons: power, home page, media, play/pause, stop, back, next. This is the best pic I could find of them (on top of the keyboard there). I was able to set it so that all of those keys preform their correct functions, except the media key. For some reason whenever I try to set it as a shortcut the key input simply isn't registered. I know that this key used to work under Windows, I guess there is something wrong with the mapping. What can I do to find out where the problem is and fix it?
