Fedora :: Terminate Current Running Program And Cancel Command?
Sep 30, 2010
In Fedora 13 64 bit, Ctrl+C does not terminate the running programing in terminal window but in Unbuntu this shortcut key works. If I hit Ctrl+Z, this makes the running program run in background which is something I definitely dont want. what is the shortcut for terminating a program in terminal window? What is the shortcut key for canceling the command I have typed but not run yet no matter where the cursor is in the command ? Ctrl+U works but only if cursor is at the last character of the command.

I have a script that starts a subshell
Code: #!/bin/sh
local SSPID
clean_exit() {
[Code]....
done so the script waits in the loop for the subshell to finish then does processing and starts over. If I kill the script the subshell is not killed. So I can trap the TERM event and do some cleaning but I need to know the subshell process id.
I'm using busybox so ps does not accept any parameters I cannot source subshell so it can access its parent environment

I have a machine running Fedora 14 and a bunch of movies stored on it as '.iso' images. It is connected to my home theater. I used to use VLC to play these movies and it worked great for a long time. About 4 months ago, about an hour or hour-and-a-half into a movie, the audio suddenly "disappears" and the machine goes CRAZY with almost 100% of the CPU spent writing to the SWAP. At first I thought the machine was locked, but it isn't; it's so doggone busy writing swap. I am unable to get enough cycles to terminate anything. I found the swap activity through System Monitor - it was ABRUPT. Sound stopped, machine became preoccupied with swap.
I have removed/reinstalled VLC, the machine has undergone a couple kernel updates, and I have removed/reinstalled a number of things associated with audio (CD ripper, mpeg stuff, etc.) yet the problem persists. I don't know what happened or when (update-wise). Any body got any ideas? While a solution would be great, I'd also be happy with a couple decent suggestions on what to look for.

I've just installed clean copies of both VirtualBox v4.0.8 and Fedora 15. Now I have followed the instructions here : [url] to install the latest VBox guest additions.
Each time I try I get the following message:
The headers for the current running kernel were not found. If the following module compilation fails then this could be the reason. The missing package can be installed with
yum install kernel-devel-2.6.38.8-32.fc15.i686.PAE.
However, if I run that command I am told there is no such package available. The guest addition installer continues seemingly OK, but after a restart they are not loaded.
I've just moved to Fedora from Ubuntu due to major issues with its new version.

my Fedora 12 does fsck on boot time to time and sometimes it's really annoying having to wait for the check to complete. In Linux Mint pressing <Esc> cancelled the check; however in Fedora this does not work (nor does Ctrl+C nor anything other I've tried). What is the key to cancel the check in Fedora?

I presume there is something in the JWM window manager - or Puppy Linux Lupu 5.01 itself that is conflicting with the normal loading of GMPLAYER....
I would like to know how to troubleshoot, and fix this problem if possible (even a workaround would be great).

Having a little issue with creating a login message banner in RHEL6 that uses two buttons. One for Accept which logs the user in. The second for Cancel which immediately logs the user out. I've modified the /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default file to have the script, posted below, and it worked perfectly fine in RHEL5. But in 6, when you click Cancel, the user is still able to log in. It even states in the system logs that the user cancelled the login. As you can see, I have the script using the 9th field of the user's env to get the PID, and using the kill command to end the process, which should be logging the user out right away if they click the Cancel button. This works in 5 without issue (though I used -f5 in RHEL5, had to move it to -f9 for RHEL6).

I'm trying to get synergy+ to work on Fedora 12 on start up. I'd like to be able to log into Fedora using my keyboard and mouse through synergy+. I've tried adding the line
Code:synergyc <localipaddress> at the end of the /etc/rc.local file but I still can't use my keyboard and mouse to log in. I've also tried adding the lineCode:su <username> -c "synergyc <localipaddress>" to /etc/rc.local but it still doesn't work. Just to clarify, I do have synergy+ working on Fedora but I need to start it after logging in on each reboot by switching my keyboard over to the other computer.

I have lost my ability in KDE Menus to do a shutdown or restart. My only option is to logoff or cancel. This started occurring about 2 weeks ago, possibly 2 KDE workspace updates ago. I have been assuming it would get fixed with an update but so far it has not.
I am running Fedora 10 x86_64, kernel = 2.6.27.7-134.fc10.x86_64, and the KDE version is:
kde-filesystem.noarch 4-20.fc10 installed
kde-settings.noarch 4.1-4.20081031svn.fc10 installed
kde-settings-kdm.noarch 4.1-4.20081031svn.fc10 installed
code....
I have 3 different systems all running the same OS and KDE versions and it is happening on all 3 systems. All systems have the "Offer Shutdown Options" selected in Session Manager. I have even turned this option off, rebooted, and then back on to try to jumpstart it but that did not work.
Additionally, I have tried deleting the contents of the /tmp directory while in single-user mode and also the .kde under my home directory. This made no difference.
Another symptom I am noticing is that any desktop widgets that I create all get moved to the upper left-hand corner of the display whenever I reboot and log back in. Any extra shortcut widgets that I add to the panel are also gone the next time I log in.
Again, these same symptoms are occurring on 3 different machines.
These symptom do not occur after a fresh install of FC 10. It is breaking during one of the yum updates but I have not narrowed it down yet as to which update is causing this to happen.

I am trying to execute 3 commands stacked together on a remote server. The purpose of the commands are to get the oldest path name, then the filename of the oldest file in that path, and then the date/time of that file.
The command I am running is: stat -c %y $( find -L $( find -L /home/data -depth -maxdepth 6 -mindepth 6 -type d | sort -f | head -1 ) | grep txt | sort -f | head -1 ) This command works fine if I execute it on the command line of the server. However, when I try to use it in a bash script and execute it from one server on the other server using ssh, the command does not work.
Example:
oldest_file=`ssh -l root $IP "stat -c %y $( find -L $( find -L /home/data -depth -maxdepth 6 -mindepth 6 -type d | sort -f | head -1 ) | grep txt | sort -f | head -1 )"`
I don't know why the command will execute if I run it straight on the server but not through ssh. I broke it down to just the 2 Find commands and saw with verbose turned on that the path from the first (innermost) Find is not being passed to the second Find so it is not returning a filename which inevitably makes the Stat command fail.
Also, if there is an easier way to do what I am trying to accomplish without stacking these 3 commands like this, then I welcome those suggestions as well since I am a Linux newbie.

Actually I suppose to use this "htop" command to get the system utilities like current processor speed ,running programs ,memory usage(ram and swap) to my program. I planned to get it using popen(). I was success popen("top | grep Mem", "r") with top command. But are there a way to take such information using "htop". Or are there any idea of taking current CPU,MEM,Swp usage as well as Tasks and running tasks using htop or other way to C program...

<Edit> Got it fixed. Didn't put the correct res in the xorg.conf file...Sheesh...None the less, this is the moment that I do a little dance around my little space...I got current up and running with only asking this dumb question...Hoo howdy...It's GRRRRRRRRRRRREAT...Now to test to see if everything I had on 12.2 will compile...So far gbdfed is not doing so.../edit>Sorry if this has been posted before, and I will look for it later if no one replies, I'm just bloody burnt out at the moment...Hooked up 122gb hd, and rather than spend the hours reading up on dd, I decided to try 13.0...Lo and behold my 845g didn't work, which I had suspected would have been the prob...So I fuddled around, read, and read, and read some more...Upgraded to current, based on a thread here...Forgot to check lilo for any errors...Hoo boy, what fun...Current changed the drives from hd# to sd#. Had to use my old zenwalk 5.2 disk to chroot in order to fix that. Then something else went wrong. Well, now I know what mkinitrd is good for, . Well, fuddling around some more, installing this intel driver, installing that intel driver until I finally found something that worked...However, I get better frame rate with glxgears than I did on 12.2, but when I move any windows they are a little choppy, plus the little tiny fonts which is rather annoying...Anyway, what else should I look at? Could it be xinarama support which I don't need?

You are advised to unmount them manually.

Is there any sure-fire way to identify whether the current Ubuntu system is running in Live mode or not? I want to distinguish between Live mode and running from installed HD, and do some processing in boot up script. FYI, in grml, the /etc/grml_cd file only exit in Live mode file system; no such file if running from installed HD.

I'm using Slackware current. I've updated my current after about two months from the last update, and since there was a huge number of changes I'm having some problems. In particular, I've forgot (my fault!) to give a "slackpkg install-new" before rebooting, so now I'm getting stuck...
Installpkg now claims a "rev" command, but I cannot figure how to find it, since the Slackware package browser on the website is still broken (when will it be available?!?!). Now, each time I try to install or upgrade a new package, I get this error:
/sbin/upgradepkg: line 41: rev: command not found
/sbin/installpkg: line 59: rev: command not found
Where can I find the package containing "rev"?
