Jun 17, 2011Well I did something pretty stupid and now I can't log in with my user other than the root user. Basically, I wanted to change my username and so I when to the admin > user & accounts - and selected the account I wanted to change. Anyway I did that and then logged out. Since then all I get when I reseted is a spinning mouse ball and a black screen. I can get into the shell prompt - but I'm not sure how I'd go about fixing this issue I created. At the moment I'm logged in the shell with root, and if I type 'id' I can see my old username, but I think the links behind it are broken.

Dec 18, 2009I've recently upgraded my hardware. Now, the system boots perfectly fine, but I can't login to the tty as root or any other user. Infact yes, I can login, but as soon as it shows Last Login, it exits and then I'm back to a login prompt. I've successfully booted into single user mode, and changed all the passwords, but still it fails. X doesn't start, although I think it's due to the old xorg.conf having the wrong driver.

Jul 6, 2010After upgrading FEdora 13, user ravi was added. Then after few days neel was added. Both of the users were already existing. So when attempting login to neel, we found that every file is owned by ravi. So we did$chown -R neel:neel But after that problem started and when we rebooted the machin, there were no list of users on login screen. (then I connected to that comp remotely, it worked, but somehow I was not able to switch to root) It says incorrect password (though I new it very well). So I went to maintenance mode and changed the root password, and rebooted. Still problem persists.Now I am not able to login as root (from anywhere, login screen , terminal, remote)No list of usernames on login screen ( but i can choose, other and type login-password)

Jun 29, 2010 my linux system doesn't have X only console login possible. i would like to deny all user to login from any sources, local machine, remote console (putty, winscp) etc. except root.
i've found something about /etc/security/access.conf and i've put:
+ : root : ALL
- : ALL : ALL
but still users other then root are able to login (via putty for example).

Normally there's something in sshd_config that can be switched to true or yes to allow root login but I can't see it in fedora 12.I can login via root at a terminal no problem, just not via ssh, I get access denied every time. Dec 22, 2010I've tried to ssh in as the root user w/o a password (RSA keys) but I've had no luck as the root user. I've tried the exact same commands with Debian 5 and Centos 5.5, without a problem. Fedora 13 and 14 won't work! I can only log in w/o a password as a normal user, never as the root user! It always asks for the password if I try as root. I've even tried copying Debian's and Centos's sshd_config file and restarting sshd, but it still won't work.

Fedora Security :: Log Files Empty - System Does Not Allow Root To Login ?
Feb 2, 2010For a month or so now, I have been enabling ssh and opening port 22. I cron'ed the start and stop commands to leave them open only a few hours a day. After a bit, I checked my logs to find that some IP or another was attempting to brute force my root account.
I took little real threat by the offense.
(1) my system does not allow root to login and
(2) it would cut them off sooner than later when my system issued the stop command.

Today I log in to find that all of my log files, as viewed from the gnome log file viewer, were empty of entries from about noon yesterday and prior.
Though I haven't noticed anything at all out of the ordinary with my system, I would like to get more opinions on the matter. Would there be any conceivable way that this was an automatic system routine, a clean up action of something? Additionally, if I was indeed the victim of a hack, what can I do to further protect my system (keeping in mind that I do want to access my system via ssh from time to time)?

Sep 25, 2009I am a new Linux user and have a question about the administrative authentication. When I am logged in as a user and I need to do something that requires root privileges the little password window comes up and I enter the root password. My question is how long are the root privileges granted for?I noticed that a few minutes after finishing checking out the firewall configuration tool and closing the window that I was still able to re-enter the fire wall tool and other administrative tools. How do I log out of the root privileges without logging out and then back into my account?

SSH from PuTTY works fine for all users. The error I get actually says that the username or password is incorrect - checked using SSH and it is fine.

Dec 14, 2010I'm seeing really bad user login format under a standard installation and am wondering why ubuntu does this as default. I have noticed that the graphical login for gnome sizes itself to accommodate a user's exact password length. This indicates to me that somewhere on the unencrypted part of a standard installation with user encryption contains at least some indication of the content of the password length which seems a security flaw even if not a complete hole, it majorly reduces the number of attempts a cracker would have to cycle through.
And that's assuming that *only* the length is contained. Furthermore it seems that it would be MUCH better to simply display the number of characters entered into the pw field and allowing the gui to expand itself from an fixed size as the field is filled out so the the user still receives visual feedback for entering characters. Either a simple character count display should be entered into the field or a 10 dot to new line so that one can visually quickly count the number enter by multiplying from a 10base graphical observation.

But when I login that way, I can't use some commands like "service". I can access all the files, I can even change the sshd_config file but some commands say "not found". I want full permissions for all computers in my house, without having to get up and go to the other room and change permissions for the file, folder, drive, directory, computer, etc., then go back to the other room again.
I just created a partition, as THIS user, THIS machine, rebooted, and cannot create a folder on the partition I just created. UGH. No more of this stuff... I guess at the very least, I'll still have to log onto each machine for this?

Aug 9, 2010I've recently installed 64bit version of ubuntu 9.10 but the GDMsetup doesn't seem to be working as it was in 9.04 i mean to say when you type gdmsetup at console the login window pops up where i can check the check-box "Allow local administrator log in" under security tab. to enable login as root. since it is not working i've to type password every time when i install a package or create a folder in root directory or mount a drive which is quite irritating how can i login as root in gui mode etc... also is there some syntax which i can put into /etc/gdm/custom.conf so i can log in as root....

Feb 8, 2010I cannot see what the problem is here. I have installed MySQL 5.1.36 via YaST on my openSUSE 11.2 (32-bit) system.I can log in as root.
