Is it possible to create threads in BASH? I need a script with will ping a network to find out unused IP. in a for or while loop the pinging process is taking a very long time. I was wondering if it is possible to send multiple ping on the same time so this will speed up the scanning process.

This applies to my 2 opensuse PC's, my Windows PC is fine.I can ping a hostname, say "PC1" but I can not ping PC1.domain.local (even the host PC can not ping it's own FQDN). When I ping just the hostname the ping stats even list the FQDN.Onto the next issue, since all my PC's, have the domain prefix domain.local, my Synology can not. I can ping it's IP and that is it. I can resolve it's name with nmblookup just fine tho and that is what is killing me. How is this not resolving.Even weirder, I can browse to "Synology" in Network Servers under places on the slab.

This included lots of hidden (starting with '.') folders, and in many cases they are config folders for packages which I have not installed on the new machine. They are taking up space, so I would like to delete them, but to go through manually and figure out which ones I need would be very laborious. Is there a way to find, and perhaps delete, config folders for packages that are not installed?

But if I gave ping -I eth1 <IP> then I can ping.
I cannot install any package, so tell me solution which includes not installing any package.
I just installed open Suse 11.3, and I cannot SSH my school. Upon further investigation I could not even ping any machines outside my local area network. Ironically I could nmap machines outside my local area network.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed openSUSE on one of my work system. The network port wasn't working when I was installing, but works fine now (checked in Windows). But for some reason, I am not able to configure the network. I used both Dynamic and Static IPs (both work fine in Windows) but still no go. I am using Yast Control Center for this purpose. I can't even ping the default gateway when I am using custom settings. When I use dynamic settings, it says Unreachable Network.

I was able to establish the network and i have connection to the internet. The suse-machine is rechable by ping from all the other computers in the network. If I'm tryiing to ping the other computers from the suse-machine, nothing happens. The router responds without packet loss, but every other ping occurs in:

I've been searching for some ideas to solve this problem but couldn't find any.
I have 2 10.04 computers and one win 7 and one vista computer: The win computers can see each other and the ubuntu computers, but the ubuntu computers cannot see each other or the win machines. The ubuntu computers connect to the internet fine and can ping each other. I cannot find settings to correct.

When I look at the code, in the portion where the socket is created, I can see that the socket is not binding to any interface:

Now, my question is: Is there any other way to send pings in C by binding to an interface?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI can ping the router, but I cannot ping anything outside of the network. The ping just sits there and eventually times out, no error message. I cannot download updates and it is the only box inside the network having any issues accessing the internet. I am running 10.10 server. I can get a list of packages on the update server, but not download them, it appears to be in an incoming issue. I'm using a motorola Netopia router in bridge mode with a netgear SRXN3205 as a router. Again every other system can download fine. I have tried running on one nic, no help dhcp, static again does nothing. I can pulls host [URL].. and I get

It may be worth noting that I set the box up at home on a dlink router and it worked fine, however I am confused why it is the only system on the network having these issues every other box can ping just fine.

I am a new user to Linux but in the last couple of months gained some Idea about it,I am trying to set up a small network in my office having 3 windows xp PCs, two fedora10 PCsI have an adsl router with 4-port hub connecting to the internet, one switch (say sw1) and one linux PC (say linux1) is connected directly to the router, the three win xp PCs are connected to switch sw1.all the above is working fine, I am able to get connected to Internet In all the systems, and able to network among all the above four.Now I want to make the linux1 as a proxy server for, hence I added another network card into it connected it to another switch sw2, which is connected to another linux pc (say linux2).
I have tried a hundred things, and googled an equal no. and finally posting it here.In order to reduce confusion I have disabled DHCP in all machines, and given static ips insteadNetworkManager was not happy about it, hence to fix my static IP i disabled NetworkManager ('chkconfig NetworkManager off')

I would like to ping all my virtual hosts in virtual machine server with a oneliner. For example like this:

I want to add to shell script but I want type myself -I and eth1 when running the bash file.
The NetworkManager applet on my desktop states that my router is 192.168.2.1 and that my first DNS server is 192.168.2.1, but I cannot ping any hosts on my network using by name. All my other computers are windows so the naming is netbios naming, but I don't know if that makes any difference to DNS. I take it that because the other computers are windows that I need a wins client or something on my Fedora laptop. I would rather not fill out my hosts file because the IP addresses of the windows boxes may change.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a somewhat complicated network setup that I am testing on an internal network. I have the following route setup:
PC Client (192.168.2.100) --> Router (192.168.2.1) --> DSLAM (on our internal network) --> PPPOE Server (192.168.9.1) on Linux Ubuntu 8.04 on interface card eth2.
On the same Linux Ubuntu Machine on interface card eth1 (static IP 192.168.5.100), I have an Asterisk SIP server plugged into it. SIP Server = 192.168.5.101 (static) I need the PC client (192.168.2.100) to register via SIP soft phone to register on the SIP server (192.168.5.101). From the PC client I can ping as far as the eth1 interface (192.168.5.100)...but cannot ping the SIP Server (.101).
From the SIP server (192.156.5.101)...I can ping 192.168.5.100, I can ping 169.254.5.228 (Eth2:avahi), but not sure what that is. I cannot ping the pppoe default gateway (192.168.9.1), which I think you cannot anyway. No firewalls are running. My IPtables I cleaned out totally. I think it might be as simple as a route add, but I really have no clue. Tried building a virtual bridge using brctl LINUX betweeh eth1 and eth2, but that made things worse (could not ping anything after that)

I have ubuntu 10.4 running on both my desktop and laptop. Both machines are connected to the router in wireless mode with Wifi.I can access internet from both machines without any issues, however I cant ping one machine from another. (and vice versa)

I tried editing /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf (I filled in the hostname where it said <hostname>), but no dice.
I also tried editing /etc/network/interfaces (the machine authenticates via DHCP but its network configuration is manually specified -- can't have users messing with NetworkManager):

Finally, I tried joining it to the domain using likewise-open, and while it shows up in Active Directory, I still can't ping it.
I have set up a MythBox on Debian Lenny. I have a wireless connection using a Belkin USB WiFi Device. I am using ndiswrapper, wpa_supplicant, etc. I am using a static ip address. I have internet access without problems. However, if I try to ssh in or even ping my mythbox inside my network there is no connection. I have never had to do anything special to ssh into debian in my network before. I am confused that I have an internet connection but can't get a ping reply.
