Programming :: Access Grub Parameters Using Shell Scripts?
Apr 12, 2010
I am setting up my test / development machine with the following scenario in mind : I boot the machine and then select one of a number ( e.g. 3 ) boot options in Grub ( Normally "OpenSuse", "Safe Mode" etc., but in this case "System Restore Dev.", "System Restore Test" ). The only difference between these options are the settings ( e.g. "vga=378" ) in these cases something like "distro=dev" / "distro=test".
In a script run on the booted system I can extract the value of the "distro" parameter ( in this case "test" ) and use it as input for a command line tool. Meaning that name entered as the value for the "distro" parameter is used for loading a file when the system is up and running. The command line tool then restores the partition with the contents of the file and reboots the system.Now, my problem is this : How to I access the Grub arguments? Code snippets ( in shell scripting or python preferbly ) are more than welcome.

myscript [-a a-arg] [-c c-arg] [-b] [-e] somedirectory
Given that I want my shell script be invoked at the command line using the above parameters - where [these brackets] denote that they are optional - what is the best method to parse them?

I am new to bash scripting (not programming in general).
I am writing a bash script that will run a Python script I have written.
I want to be able to do the following:
Pass parameters to the bash script via the cronjob (so I can have two cron jobs) one to be run with parameter 'foobar', and the other 'foo'
switch based on the parameter passed to the bash script (by switching, I mean an if/else based on the paramter passed to the bash script).

I have a Python script that I run which needs to execute under a special environment, so I would run the program like so from my working directory (~/project/src):
python manage.py shell
This opens up an interactive shell for me to start typing my own commands.I have another set of administrative activities that I would like to house in another directory (~/project/admin). The manage.py is really finicky about running from the working directory. So, to make this whole thing work, I made a script which starts off like so:
#!/usr/bin/python ../src/manage.py shell
There are a couple problems with this. The first is that it doesn't work:
/usr/bin/python: can't open file '"/../src/manage.py" shell': [Errno 2] No such file or directory
How do you specify multiple parameters to the interpreter?How do I change the working directory?

Some may recall I recently gave up on bash, rather than give up my programming style.Surely I will have reason to return but that's another story. My little issue now:I am debugging a new [Korn] shell script. I have a function that performs a specialized match on a string and I see that I am able to call that function with no problem, with both of it parameters. The function does not do any print or echo command - it uses "return" for a TRUE (0) of FALSE (1), as is the shell exit code convention. Thus, I have the following test:
Code:
if [[ match_except_release ${PATH_DIR[$LC]} bin ]]
then
[code]....

We're using 10.10-server. We are trying to make grub boot changes permanent. I've already looked at thread [URL]. We updated /etc/default/grub, and update-grub propagates those changes into /boot/grub/grub.cfg, but not into menu.lst. It appears to use menu.lst as the source at boot, so our change doesn't show up as a linux parm.

Old Toshiba laptop model A30 -- tried various installs 8.04/9.04/9.10. They all hung trying to boot the install disks after the initial few screens. Finally, I got 9.10 to install, dual booting XP and 9.10 by choosing F6 from the initial menu, and putting an X beside:
ACPI=off
noapic
nolapc
edd=on
nodmaid
and then hitting escape.But, after the install, I couldn't boot 9.10 from grub as it hangs after about 30 seconds of trying. The live CD would not work without the above parameters being set as described above, but does work with them set! I need those same parameters passed to grub at 9.10 boot time, but I can't figure out how to do that. I've had many successful installs of Ubuntu across a number of desktops and laptops, but I never had to deal with the guts of grub before. It all just worked.

Specifically I'm trying to run xmacro from within a c program. If I were to run it from the terminal I would do it along the lines of Code: xmacroplay :0.0 < script_file.txt, but I want to run it from my c program. I'm fine with my c program running it from the terminal if that's possible and easier but I'm guessing there must be a better way.

I pass two parameters in a URL, s and q. I recently ran into the problem that the & in the value(aerial&satelitecity)causes a bit of trouble so I need to replace it. After some research I found that it needs to be replaced by %26. I've tried the standard PHP functions htmlspecialchars and htmlentities, but they translate to & Is there another function that I haven't found yet or must I write my own?

I have a bash script where I am replacing a date with a variable
Code:
variable="date"
sed -r "s/([0-9][0-9])/([0-9][0-9])/([0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9])/$variable/g" /path/to/file.txt
I have googled but cant find any info on what the -r, or sometimes I have seen -i and -e, after the "sed" I googled "sed parameters"
r appears to output the replaced date, but not change the original file. Usually using -i will change an original file for me. Does anyone know what the -i, -e, -r are about? A link to an explanation would be good, as I have been unable to find one in my searches.

I get no print to stdout on screen from the C code.Does bash somehow block or mask it?I get print from bash. I get this error in the non-test bash script like: let "rdval = $rdstr"syntax error: operand expected (error token is " ")The let command prints rdval= but I presume this is due to the printf test statements getting in the way.I am getting no compile errors. Why does the C code not print the values specified?

I've searched online and found many examples using getopts, but nothing that clearly explains it use, nor any examples of what I'm trying to do. I have a script named "process". It can take from 0 to 3 different options. I'd like to be able to handle these options regardless of the order that they are entered.
Syntax:
process [-v] [-d #] [-h|-?] [string]
-v = verbose mode on
-d # = how deep to do the process, expecting a number parameter
-h or -? = show command usage
string = only process lines containing the specified string

A failed upgrade, from disk images, of Fedora 10 to 11 resulted in no GRUB bootloader main menu appearing on bootup (no WIN, no LINUX choices from which to boot). I am booted directly into the GRUB command shell...so, no WIN, no LINUX, nothing. And my understanding of GRUB shell commands is very low.I have 2 hard disks, WIN on the first, LINUX on the second. I believe GRUB Bootloader is on the first disk.Sadly, I have no external install media.An old grub.conf hardcopy indicates that root =/dev/sdb2, root (hd1,0), kernel /vmlinuz....olderversion...(relative to /boot),initrd /initrd...olderversion... (relative to boot). and WINDOWS on (hd0,1), with chainloader +1
I need to somehow get past this grub shell, and re-install/re-instate the grub bootloader, so it can boot normally.What grub command(s) must I use? I've played around with the commands, but with no success.I worry that if I can't resolve this, the whole machine may be useless.

I started another thread about this to get help booting into openSUSE after Fedora rewrote my bootloader and deleted all other entries. I managed to fix it but I never did find out why the following commands caused my system to boot to the grub shell instead of the grub menu.
Code:
grub
root (hd0,3)
setup (hd0)
quit
reboot
Can anyone explain to me why these commands caused my system to boot directly to a grub shell? It's as if there were no /boot/grub/menu.lst files for it to use, but after I got everything back to normal, the files were still there.
If it helps, this is how the drive was setup before and now, except Fedora was on /dev/sda4 and has since been deleted.
Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 262 2104483+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda2 263 13316 104856255 83 Linux
/dev/sda3 * 13317 14621 10482412+ 83 Linux

Is there some type of functional way to read things in the Python shell interpreter similar to less or more in the bash (and other) command line shells?
Example:
Code:
>>> import subprocess
>>> help(subprocess)
...
[pages of stuff to read]
...
I'm hoping so as I hate scrolling and love how less works with simple keystrokes for page-up/page-down/searching etc.
