General :: Shell Scripting: Parse Parameters From Command Line?
Mar 12, 2010
myscript [-a a-arg] [-c c-arg] [-b] [-e] somedirectory
Given that I want my shell script be invoked at the command line using the above parameters - where [these brackets] denote that they are optional - what is the best method to parse them?

I am a bit confused with the first line while writing a shell script , if someone can please explain me the meaning of the first line " #!/bin/bash "the confusion for me is the # at the beginning , in shell scripting # means a comment. but in this case it loads the shell which the script must use, instead of commenting the line how is this possible. where is this defined , any particular file.

I've written a script to parse a file and print each line that ends with matching pattern, if the next line is blank. The pattern lines are the result of md5sum $i|sed 's/path///g' so that only md5 and filename appear. Here's what I'm using.
Quote:
for fline in `sed -n '/.*.ext$/p' file1`
do
if [ "`sed -n -e '/'"$fline"'/ {n; p;}' file1`" == "" ]
then
echo ""$fline" has no info" >>file2
fi
done
[Code]....

I have added an application launcher to my desktop and it works fine. However, I want to be able to feed parameters to the launcher before I launch the application. So, for instance, if the command is normally "/usr/bin/foo something" I want to be able to add the "something" parameter dynamically after clicking the launcher but before the application launches. Is this possible in Fedora?

with the current Musicbrainz fiasco with Rythmbox and Sound Juicer I am now using RipperX. I like RipperX, but I would like to know if there are any command line parameters or some way of selecting the CD/DVD drive. It appears that RipperX can multi-task which would save me some time.

We have two paths. First one is directory, second either dir or file.
/a/b/c and /a/d/e.txt
Relative path from first path to second will be: ../../d/e.txt
How to get it in linux terminal?
PS: For those who ask "what is use case?" - creating lots of relative symlinks (just as an example)

I am trying to write a script that takes an input file ($FileName) and an intermediate file ($FileName.info) and removes lines from $FileName if the value in $2 of $FileName.info is <75.
I can't figure out how to feed only one line of the .info file to the if statement at a time so that it will perceive it as an integer instead of a list.
The error I am getting now is ./script.sh: line 6: [: : integer expression expected
Sample input $FileName

I am new to bash scripting (not programming in general).
I am writing a bash script that will run a Python script I have written.
I want to be able to do the following:
Pass parameters to the bash script via the cronjob (so I can have two cron jobs) one to be run with parameter 'foobar', and the other 'foo'
switch based on the parameter passed to the bash script (by switching, I mean an if/else based on the paramter passed to the bash script).

I have a Python script that I run which needs to execute under a special environment, so I would run the program like so from my working directory (~/project/src):
python manage.py shell
This opens up an interactive shell for me to start typing my own commands.I have another set of administrative activities that I would like to house in another directory (~/project/admin). The manage.py is really finicky about running from the working directory. So, to make this whole thing work, I made a script which starts off like so:
#!/usr/bin/python ../src/manage.py shell
There are a couple problems with this. The first is that it doesn't work:
/usr/bin/python: can't open file '"/../src/manage.py" shell': [Errno 2] No such file or directory
How do you specify multiple parameters to the interpreter? How do I change the working directory?

I am trying to learn more about global expressions and how it is needed in changing stuff in vi and in shell scipting in general. My question is basic:
How can I add a " # " pound sign at the beginning of every line in a file. So if I want to remark out every line in a file, what would be the global expression for that? Is there a global expression cheat sheet?
