The first parameter is the name of a directory, the second parameter is the name of a directory should be store i.e# ./storeList.sh /etc etcFilesListHow can you refer to the variables that represent the words passed in on the command line?

I have two txt files containing x and y coordinates: xcoord.txt & ycoord.txt. I need to open them; read them line by line to get each coordinate; then each time I need to update Xs and Ys parameters inside another file called "dc.in" with the grabbed values.
Finally each time I need to run two exe files ( dc_2002 and st_vac) and produce corresponding output for each Xs and Ys ( dc.in is an input file for this exe files)

I am trying to figure something out as part of something else I am going to do. I was just wondering the easiest and quickest way to run a loop at the Linux command line which will make x amount of symbolic links when I need them.
I am using Debian 5.
I figure its something as easy as ~# foreach statement, then I just do a loop with the command to make a sym link.

I have added an application launcher to my desktop and it works fine. However, I want to be able to feed parameters to the launcher before I launch the application. So, for instance, if the command is normally "/usr/bin/foo something" I want to be able to add the "something" parameter dynamically after clicking the launcher but before the application launches. Is this possible in Fedora?

with the current Musicbrainz fiasco with Rythmbox and Sound Juicer I am now using RipperX. I like RipperX, but I would like to know if there are any command line parameters or some way of selecting the CD/DVD drive. It appears that RipperX can multi-task which would save me some time.

At the moment I got my md5sum checking working which I write to a text file and see below.
If the md5sum works it will write the output to check2.md5 test.txt: OK
If the md5sum fails it will write test.txt: FAILED
How do I write if statement to check the output whether or not the md5sum failed or not ?

Code: cmd='date | wc'
$cmd If this script is executed, an error is generated. The reason written was that "The execution fails because the pipe is not expanded and is passed to date as an argument".What is meant by expansion of pipe. When we execute date | wc on the command line, it goes fine.then | is not treated as an argument. Why?

I am trying to learn how to pass more than a one-command startup for gnome-terminal.
I will give an example of what I'm trying to do here:
Code:
#! /bin/bash
#
#TODO write this for gnome and xterm
USAGE="
${0##*/} [-x] [-g]

However, running with the -g option to invoke gnome-terminal, I get a "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal" error.
This same error occurs if the gnome-terminal line is changed to
Code:
gnome-terminal -e mcTerm
Is there any way to pass more than one command on to gnome-terminal? I have tried various single and double quoting senarios and in a final attempt, I abstracted to an exported function all to no avail. Perhaps even though gnome-term is better at many things than xterm, xterm trumps it in this instance.

I am trying to write a script (especially C-shell) to execute a fortran code that reads in parameters from keyboard typing. I will have to process this .F code for many times with the parameters the same for all my data files, therefore, I don't have to type in everytime I execute the .F code. But I don't know what is the command in c shell to read in a text files that contains all the parameters I want and can make the shell read in appropriately to feed the .F code.

I'm building a script for my place of employment. The next step in it is checking what the user input was. Determining if they added a part in there or not. The script prompts for a hostname. Hostnames are localhost.localdomain. Now, I want the script to check to see if they put localdomain and if they did, not to add the domain to the /etc/sysconfig/network, but just what they entered. I am using an awk command to print a line from a cvs file.the awk command includes an if statement that filter the output-lets say i want to print all the lines that the price field is greater than 30.i have it working when i put the parameters myself.. but when i try to send them with vars it wont work..i am sending the sign of the if statement - can only be: == , < , >it looks like this:
cat file.csv | awk -v sign=">" -v field="2000" '{if($3 sign field) printf "%-12s%-12s%-12s%-12s
",$1,$2,$3,$4}' FS=,
the bold part is the problem , because when i put the sign parameter myself t works great.. i guess its a chars issue but i cant spot it

I'm troubleshooting a batch of scripts I'm modifying, including an IDL script called by a .csh script. the IDL scripts were provided to me by a coworker and my .csh script is intended to automate a lengthy set of extremely tedious and time consuming processing tasks.
I am currently in the process of debugging, and can't get the IDL to print any messages other than critical failures to the screen. Is there any easy way to redirect the stdout to either a logfile or the screen?
