Ubuntu :: Korn Shell: Syntax Error On Test A Function With Parameters?
Jan 4, 2011
Some may recall I recently gave up on bash, rather than give up my programming style.Surely I will have reason to return but that's another story. My little issue now:I am debugging a new [Korn] shell script. I have a function that performs a specialized match on a string and I see that I am able to call that function with no problem, with both of it parameters. The function does not do any print or echo command - it uses "return" for a TRUE (0) of FALSE (1), as is the shell exit code convention. Thus, I have the following test:
Code:
if [[ match_except_release ${PATH_DIR[$LC]} bin ]]
then
[code]....

Ive been playing around with Linux a little bit and have started to look into different shell types. I know BASH is the most basic, or that is in most distro. but is there any disadvantages of using a Korn shell instead?

I am trying to modify a script for research purposes and am having difficulty here as I have little prior experience with C-shell scripting.
The script looks as follows (it includes tcl commands like runFEP that you can ignore)
#!/bin/bash
for ((old=1, new=2; old<=4; old++,new++))
a1=${old}%50
a2=${new}%50
do
cat > input${new}.conf <<EOF
${a1}
code....
My question: I keep getting a syntax error when defining my two variables a1 and a2. I essentially need these variables to be
a1 = value of variable old divided by 50
a2 = value of variable new divided by 50

I work for AT&T and our Windows-centric workgroup is being tasked with supporting an app running on RedHat. To help my coworkers, I'm building a Fedora 11 VM that we can play with to familiarize ourselves with the UNIX environment.
Because of corporate network policies in place, my VM can't get access to the Internet.
Since we're AT&T employees, we're naturally using the korn shell on the production system. I'd like to install the korn shell on my VM. However, it doesn't appear to be part of the base fedora repository.
Is the korn shell available for Fedora? If so, how would I copy it to shiny media, mount it on my VM, and install it?

I am a Novell (now defunct) CNE tring to learn Linux and am having a lot of trouble finding out where the WB 6-6 is wrong in the syntax for adding local4... the the syslog-ng config file. In the instructions there are discrepancies between commas and simi-comma, they are both in the statements in no particular order. there is no pattern to them. Here is what the book shows:
filter f_local4debug { level(debug) and facility(local4); };
When I try to input this in the Gnome terminal window to try and find out where it goes wrong I get the following: -bash: syntax error near unexpected token "(" If I can get the correct syntax I belive I can use the info to get past the rest of this portion of the lesson. I am desperate to learn Linux as the only jobs out there for a Novell CNE are migrations to MS, which really sucks, since MS really really sucks.

I am setting up my test / development machine with the following scenario in mind : I boot the machine and then select one of a number ( e.g. 3 ) boot options in Grub ( Normally "OpenSuse", "Safe Mode" etc., but in this case "System Restore Dev.", "System Restore Test" ). The only difference between these options are the settings ( e.g. "vga=378" ) in these cases something like "distro=dev" / "distro=test".
In a script run on the booted system I can extract the value of the "distro" parameter ( in this case "test" ) and use it as input for a command line tool. Meaning that name entered as the value for the "distro" parameter is used for loading a file when the system is up and running. The command line tool then restores the partition with the contents of the file and reboots the system.Now, my problem is this : How to I access the Grub arguments? Code snippets ( in shell scripting or python preferbly ) are more than welcome.

I am exploring the Python 3 standard library and am currently attempting to test the bin function. It converts an integer into a binary string. I believe the module I wrote is flawed somehow. Here's the source code:
Code:
#!/usr/bin/python3.1
#This module tests the bin() function.
import sys
def get_input():
x = input("Enter an integer: ")
def use_bin():
[code]....
As you can see, the binary form given is always 0b10111. I'm no expert on binary code (or hexadecimal notation), but surely 9000 and two would have different results?
EDIT: Added a line in the module to repeat back what integer the user entered, and then the binary form. It would appear that no matter what integer the user enters, Python thinks it's "23".
Example output:
Code:
>>>
Enter an integer: 1
You entered 23
The binary form of this integer is 0b10111
>>>

I am new to bash scripting (not programming in general).
I am writing a bash script that will run a Python script I have written.
I want to be able to do the following:
Pass parameters to the bash script via the cronjob (so I can have two cron jobs) one to be run with parameter 'foobar', and the other 'foo'
switch based on the parameter passed to the bash script (by switching, I mean an if/else based on the paramter passed to the bash script).

I have a Python script that I run which needs to execute under a special environment, so I would run the program like so from my working directory (~/project/src):
python manage.py shell
This opens up an interactive shell for me to start typing my own commands.I have another set of administrative activities that I would like to house in another directory (~/project/admin). The manage.py is really finicky about running from the working directory. So, to make this whole thing work, I made a script which starts off like so:
#!/usr/bin/python ../src/manage.py shell
There are a couple problems with this. The first is that it doesn't work:
/usr/bin/python: can't open file '"/../src/manage.py" shell': [Errno 2] No such file or directory
How do you specify multiple parameters to the interpreter?How do I change the working directory?

I was trying to write a script, but for some reason I can't test two variables using -gt:
a=`expr $currentSize + 0`
b=`expr $fileSize + 0`
[$a -gt $b]
this is what I get:
[22234534: not found
what is the problem? It seems like I can't check if a variable is greater than another but only if a variable is greater than a fixed number. Is that so? By the way the variables $fileSize and $currentSize exist and $a and $b have a value.

I've searched and read lots about trying to get gnome-shell to run in Virtualbox(v4) with no success on my end. Lots of the posts are outdated and are using Virtualbox 3.
So anyone have any tips or hints for testing the Gnome-shell? (I'd prefer to test in with 10.10 in Virtualbox 4, but am open to upgrading to 11.04 if necessary)

Im a bit stuck with a simple script that im practicing with... im trying to get my head around some simple scripting. Basically i want to write a script that will work as below: It will ask the user to enter their userid. If its correct it will say 'Correct' If its the wrong id (But the ID exists in /etc/passwd) then it will say 'incorrect' If its not a valid userid it will say 'doesnt exist'. What i have so far is:
[Code]...
# If the user enters their own userid they will get a comment saying 'correct' $LOGNAME) echo "Correct";;
# If they enter another users ID (That exists in the /etc/passwd), then they get a message to say 'incorrect userid used'. Im not sure what i need to do here to get it to check the /etc/passwd to see if the input exists in there.... im guessing some kind of simple 'if' statement to say ---- "if 'input' exists in /etc/passwd then echo "incorrect userid used"
# If its entered incorrectly and not a valid ID then they will get this comment. Again, im guessing this part would be similar to te above option..... *) echo "not a valid ID";;
Ive managed to work out how the basic Case staements work, but to add a conditional statement based on the input, i just cant figure out. I have tried looking on google, and found some help but it doesnt really explain how i check the input against the /etc/passwd.

I'm trying to do the following. from a php webpage click on a link, that opens a shell/cmd and runs an open ping to the device. so it must actually open a shell (for linux) or cmd (for windows) and run a ping to the specified ip. Currently i'm running an exec command, but for this i need to wait for the result to be fetched and print it out. I want to monitor it in realtime, by just clickingon the button. How to get this working?

I am trying a release of Ubuntu has have run into a problem that does not make much sense. I am receiving the following error: Syntax error on line 20 of /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/portal: Invalid command 'ProxyHTMLEnable', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration
fail! I believe the modules required for this is apt-get install libapache2-mod-proxy-html and it shows under the available modules and it was enabled with a2enmod proxy-html.
The line from the config is ProxyHTMLEnable On. The release is the latest download with updates from, 32bit.
