want to write a shell script to copy database archivelog files sequential from one directory to another directory within a server. I am hereby enclosing the sample archivelog file name. Archive log filename : log_0000118432_1.arc (Here number 0000118432 will be sequentially incremented by 1 for next filename). Here the catch is all Archivelogs must be copied to destination directory. Previously copied files should not be copied.

I want to write a shell script for submitting multiple jobs sequentially. For example,

qsub job1.sh
# when job1.sh is done, run the next one
qsub job2.sh
how to make the shell script know that job1.sh is done and now I can run job2.sh?

- login to db server (I have create ssh-keygen to bypass the login session)
- login sqlplus / as sysdba
- update status set status='END' where status='BEGIN';
- commit;
- quit;

I have a (rather large) database of mp3 track information. I also have several directories of the actual mp3s. I'm trying to write a simple bash script that will check the contents of the directories against what's in the database, and upon finding a file that isn't in the database, do something.
Here's what I have so far:

The trouble I'm having (in the sample directory of "/mnt/music/B/Beatles, The/" the file "Beatles, The - Taxman.mp3" isn't in the database.) is getting it to actually trigger an error when an entry isn't in the database.
Once triggering on a non-entered file is working, any way to get it to traverse the entire /mnt/music hierarchy?

I have 6 scripts that do after-hours tasks: mostly backup related. Is there a way for me to create a "trigger.sh" script that will invoke each of the others, and let them finish before starting the next? That would give me a single place to turn on, shut off or move the order of my scripts.
When I tried this, trigger.sh ran the first script in line and then exited. I don't know how to get back to trigger.sh to start the next process. Yes, I have searched around and tried several things, but this is proving harder (for me) than I thought.

I am trying to rename some files that do not have a pattern in their names to a sequential names. original file names are in the form of REC92837498, REC9837449 and so on. I want to rename them to REC_1, REC_2...etc.

I'm looking for a general pointer, or label for what I am trying to do. Not a specific line of code. I've written a couple of small sh script that gets some user input, then calls several programs to run in the background with the &. My problem is, they all run at the same time. Is there some way to get these jobs to run sequentially rather than consecutively? If yes, what is this process called? I'm thinking there should be a way to line up background jobs in a job queue, similar to how a print queue works, one job at a time. After searching for a couple of hours, I'm thinking there must be a name for this, but I don't know what it is.

I am a novice to the shell script. In my system from db server the log files are enerating with the name log1.txt,log2.txt..... It is capable of keeping 10 files at a time in dir called /db/sis/log1.txt. I want to copy the log1.txt to another directory when ever it generating by attaching the time stamp to it for the back-up purpose. this files will be there for a period of 24 hours. after that the back-up dir should be cleared and it start copying again the fresh file from the same dir.

I've got quite a decent rsync script setup, however I'd like to invoke it whenever there's change to a file. My initial idea was to use find, however this has two major flaws - the first being my particular unix veriant cant understand -print0 which means this doesn't work, the second is that I'm not 100% sure how to put variables into quotation marks so ls can understand the target:

I am trying to create a simple bash script to rsync some folders within a directory stucture. I am using wild cards, in the rsync source directory structure, but my command always fails. I believe it is the way I am using wild cards within my for loop. Here is my command ;

I am trying to write some small script file that will check if a USB stick is connected to my pc or not. I can't seem to get it to work, but I am sure it is a very simple fix.

I am trying to search particular directory which has files with extensions like .html,.mp3,.xml etc I have a list of such files What I am doing in my script is

I have around 100+ files name with some particular extension , this code works fine if the directory name does not have any special character in it like " "(white character) .
It is failing to give the output. IF I run the find command on the console the I am getting the correct file name with location
/home/user1/public_html/mediawiki/config/movie.mp3
/home/user1/public_html/mediawiki/movie.mp3
/home/user1/public_html/mediawiki/pop.mp3
/home/user2/public_html/index test/pop.mp3
/home/user2/public_html/index test/web.xml

If I echo the file name from the script Then output is little missed match when a directory name has special char like " "
/home/user1/public_html/mediawiki/config/movie.mp3
/home/user1/public_html/mediawiki/movie.mp3
/home/user1/public_html/mediawiki/pop.mp3

I am not sure what is wrong with script or my code .. Does shell have un-controlled behavior of manipulating the output of any command.

I am facing a problem in Windows due to a virus called Newfolder.exe which creats files with the same name as it's parent directory and an extension .exe and this happens for every directory in the entire hierarchy in the infected pen drive. The antivirus detects them, but is sucking slow. So I thought this is a good opportunity to use the concepts of the all mighty shell script to remove those as they follow the same pattern. Say my complete path is

The virus would have created an file with complete paths

I downloaded a mouse theme form gnome look and installed it in the themes. But it has not appeared in the pointer themes section in custimation even though it said that it is installed correctly.When I drag the file to install it again it says something along the lines of it cannot copy a directory over a directory.Where can I find where the mouse/pointer theme is located and delete it. I have searched filesystem, google and these forums and not had any luck yet.
