Programming :: Shell Script To Automatically Delete Files With The Same Name As The Parent Directory?
Mar 18, 2010
I am facing a problem in Windows due to a virus called Newfolder.exe which creats files with the same name as it's parent directory and an extension .exe and this happens for every directory in the entire hierarchy in the infected pen drive. The antivirus detects them, but is sucking slow. So I thought this is a good opportunity to use the concepts of the all mighty shell script to remove those as they follow the same pattern. Say my complete path is
Code:
/home/pkd/fol1/
The virus would have created an file with complete paths
Quote:
/home/pkd/fol1.exe
If fol1 has two more directories fol11 and fol12 Then there would be two more .exe(virus created) in the following path
Quote:
/home/pkd/fol11/fol11.exe
/home/pkd/fol12/fol12.exe

I have a FAT32 SD card with a file on it, that, viewed in Windows the filename consists of a long string of nonsense. Viewed in my Android phone's Linux terminal, ls -a shows nothing in the directory. When I try to delete the parent directory with rm -rf deleteme, it fails with "Directory not empty". When I try to delete/move in Windows 7, it says the filename would be too long and/or Explorer crashes. Windows disk check doesn't find anything wrong. How can I delete this?

I have a shell script that need to create some files:
1) backup files of user passed in file ( that will be written by this shell ).
2) temp files that the shell will create and later delete/remove.
This shell script will be used from my local dir ( I am not a super or a sysadmin ). Users of this shell will call this script to run on their local files in their respective directories. When my script runs, it errors with the following:
cp: cannot create regular file `./listfile.txt.backup': Permission denied
/home/myUser/tools/myShellScript: line 12: listfile.txt: Permission denied
for the temp I was able to avoid this error by creating the temp file in the /tmp directory. All I want is for this shell script to run, create/modify/backup files in user's local dirs.
The user dir has the following permission:
drwxr-xr-x testDir
the file that needs to be backed-up has:
-rw-r--r-- listfile.txt.

I have 2 external hdd in wich I have all my files.... yesterday, I have copied all the files from hdd2 to hdd1 and I want to eliminate duplicates so I used FSLint to find them, now, I have a txt file that looks like this:
Code: /media/My Book/!!!MIS DOCUMENTOS/Documentos/2 sep2003-jun2009 USB/!TESIS/TESIS/TESIS CVT LABVIEW Y CODEWARRIOR/LabVIEW85RuntimeEngineFull.exe /media/My Book/HDD_Toshiba/Borrable/Pen_Drive_4GB/Tesis/Super CD de la tesis/LabView/LabVIEW85RuntimeEngineFull.exe multiplied by millions of entries...
now I want to make a shell script to delete all the files/entries (read from the log file) that begin with:
Code:
/media/My Book/HDD_Toshiba/**** Since HDD_Toshiba is the folder in hdd1 (MyBook) that contains all the files from hdd2

I am stuck at a issue in shell scripting. I had tried all the possible ways, yet unable to reach a solutions. I am working on a application, which runs on C shell. For this I had created a installation script, which installs my application in the system, it is working fine. Now, the problematic part is that I had set an alias in ".cshrc" file, which invokes my application when any user types it. But for an alias to take effect, I need to re-login into the system, because I have to read ".cshrc" file again, in order to take effect of my alias. However I can use "source ~/.cshrc" file after my installation, so that my aliasing works without logging back again. But Requirement is that, just after installing the application, alias should be available to user, without logging back again and without issuing any extra command.
I had tried one other way is that, I had created a symbolic link in ~/bin directory, which points to my application to be run, but even that require, to issue rehash command in order to modify internal command hash table. So, my overall problem is that changing alias in subshell should be reflected to parent shell, without running any other command (all commands should be run in installation script only). Or, in other way how to rehash parent shell from subshell. The ultimate requirement is that, the command that will run my application, should be available just after executing the installation script, either by aliasing or by rehashing, or by any other means.

I'm able to use the following to remove the target directory and recursively all of its subdirectories and contents. find '/target/directory/' -type d -name '*' -print0 | xargs -0 rm -rf
However, I do not want the target directory to be removed. How can I remove just the files in the target, the subdirectories, and their contents?

I've found several posts discussing how to do this in with the terminal, but none exactly fit what I am trying to do. And since I'm still very new, I was hoping for some help.
I have a parent directory called "Music." The subdirectories all start with "artist", some go further as in "artist/album/cd1". So right now the structure varies in the following ways code...
How can I move all the files (or the file types that I choose) to the parent directory "music"?
(By the way, for any who are interested, this is so that I can use an external hd with a PS3. ("playstation 3"--for anyone who was in my predicament searching the threads)

I have an archive directory that needs to be cleaned up once per quarter. The top level (/data/archive/*) directory names change daily, as well as the subdirectories and the filenames (the application names everything according to date). Also, there are two top level directories, bin and incoming, that we can't touch. I want to write a shell script that loops through the 15 or 20 top level directories and deletes all files and subdirectories older than 3 days (skipping the bin and incoming folders). Can someone get me started on a script? I am kinda new to shell scripting.

The two shell scripts (t1prog and t2prog) are given below they are working fine. The input for the first program is 't1.det' and for second program is 't1.rnaml'. These two input files are in 'dir1' folder. I am executing the shell like 'sh t1prog > t1out' and 'sh t2prog > t2out' from this directory only. Then I am executing a java program 'java RNA'; for this, t1out and t2out are input files used in the program and I am getting the final output on screen.
The input files 't1.det' and 't1.rnaml' are in different folders with same name and with different values. Each folder specifies one gene sequence input files.
In mfold directory there are 5 directors and each directory contains these input files as shown below
cd mfold
dir1 dir2 dir3 dir4 dir5
cd dir1
t1.det t1.rnaml
[Code].....
for inputs in different directories and executing these and redirecting the final ouput after executing 'java RNA' statement to a file is needed.
