View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to create a simple bash script to rsync some folders within a directory stucture. I am using wild cards, in the rsync source directory structure, but my command always fails. I believe it is the way I am using wild cards within my for loop. Here is my command ;
Code:
for seq in `cat test.txt` ; do rsync -nvP /folder/folder/folder/folder/folder/**/$seq /folder/folder/folder/ ; done This always fails, where if I do a ls to the destination, to test the path, it always works.
I have a directory and sub-directories (4 or 5 depths). There are several type with extension in them (*.mp3, *.wma, *.jpg, etc). I would like to copy the whole directory to another location recursively but only *.mp3 files.

want to write a shell script to copy database archivelog files sequential from one directory to another directory within a server. I am hereby enclosing the sample archivelog file name. Archive log filename : log_0000118432_1.arc (Here number 0000118432 will be sequentially incremented by 1 for next filename). Here the catch is all Archivelogs must be copied to destination directory. Previously copied files should not be copied.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWe have documents on multiple workstations and want to collate them into a single repository to provide text search and download. So far we have implemented rsync to copy files from each workstation under a directory for each workstation on a server (incidentally providing a backup) and have set up text search using Xapian with Omega; users access it via a web browser. Still to do is to set up a system to copy files from each workstation's area on the server to the repository.
Many files are duplicated. In these cases we want to preserve the names but keep a single copy of the file;hard links can be used for that. For each file to be copied from a workstation's area into the collated area we need to check whether it is a duplicate (file size and, if same, MD5 sum) and if so, create a hard link to the original rather than create a copy.A system to detect and replace duplicates in the collated area has been written using ruby and postgresql but the developer cannot commit to continuing this work. It does mean we have a postgresql database populated with "fingerprints" of files in the collated area.My first priority is to get the system working; in the longer term whatever is developed must be maintainable; I do not yet know which language skills are available locally.
I am fluent in bash and competent with awk. Ruby looks nice but I have started to learn python and do think it prudent to learn both at the same time. Python's postgresql capabilities are not settled but may be fine for the simple usage required. What to do? A bash solution would run very slowly but could be developed quickly. Language knowledge aside, I have found it difficult to install ruby on the server (CentOS 5.5;installed rvm but "gem" still not installed; seems a very complex system with its own package management).
I downloaded a mouse theme form gnome look and installed it in the themes. But it has not appeared in the pointer themes section in custimation even though it said that it is installed correctly. When I drag the file to install it again it says something along the lines of it cannot copy a directory over a directory.Where can I find where the mouse/pointer theme is located and delete it. I have searched filesystem, google and these forums and not had any luck yet.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am using my media server as my podcast collector. I am in the process of learning the ins and outs of NFS so i can mount a NFS directory and transfer my podcasts from server to player. For now i am using scp to transfer podcasts from server to desktop then to player. The problem is the path to the directory of one of the podcasts is /home/user/gpodder-downloads/The BILL&TIMMY Show Podcast.
whenever i try and run my scp command it fails because it thinks that TIMMY is a script i want to run in the background. I have tried to back-slash escape the character, i've tried single quoting and double quoting the character and i still get the same problem. as it sits now i have to move all podcasts to another directory and then transfer them to my desktop...but i would like to transfer the podcasts without un-necessary steps.
I want to do the following.
1. have a directory full of subdirectory
2. Pick the first file from every sub and copy that to the main directory and also rename that file to the same name as the subdirectory's name
3. need to work in commandline best is a simple script.
Is it possible to copy files from directory of one user to directory of another user in linux?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI moved to Mac OS X recently and bumped into the "feature" of Mac where copying files from an external drive resets the file modification/update date/timestamp to the current date (which Windows does not), causing a disaster for my 10+ years of backup work files where date is important. So, before I learned how to avoid that (e.g. using the -p "preserve" flag in the "cp" copy command) I have in the meantime added to my new Mac hard drive many more files as well as updating existing old files.
I have a backup external hard drive with all my old data and proper modification dates. I have a Mac hard drive with reset modification file dates (a single or two particular days). The Mac hard drive has all the "true" and "current" file contents with files modified and added. I need to Copy all the original files from the external harddrive, preserving file metadata (really only modified date), but ONLY overriding the new internal Mac hard drive IF
The file contents (md5 or whatever) is the same or The file was updated after the day (which of course I can see on all files) on which the original disasterous cope was performed (implying the file is new or modified) Ensure the copy leaves all the new and modified files completely intact on the Mac internal hard drive. "No prompting/stopping of the copy of any kind (i.e., not verbose) is required but is o.k". "Recursive copy - obviously I would like to copy all* files folders and subfolders found in export".
I would like to copy the contents of a directory into another. I don't want to copy the directory and all files and directories under it, but just the contents of the directory just as if it were a regular file. Doing cp -r target dest copies the directory and the entire hierarchy rooted in it. I get error if I do not include the -r option. (I am calling cp from within a C program.)

View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to copy a directory (retaining the permissions and owners) without copying the contents of the directory?
If there is no such thing... then I need a way to determine if a target path is a file or a directory, and if it is a directory I need to make a new directory elsewhere that has the same name, owner and permissions.
Basically, I'm trying write a script to copy 200 GB of files over a network to a new server, and I'd like to do it by generating a list with the find command. That way, I can migrate large chunks of the files over the course of a week, and on the day of the migration generate a new list of files that changed in the last week and then copy just the chagned files over minimizing the down time. However, the list will contain directories that I can't just use the 'cp' command on because it will copy all the contents of the directory.
I installed a new music application. It reads covers.jpg as the cover of the album, however, my covers files where named album. I dont want to rename, I want to make a copy of album.jpg and if possible as well rename it to covers.jpg. The file has to be in the same folder that it currently is. I have looked around to see how I can do this but have not been able to.

The directories names are dir1, dir2, dir3 and dir4 and i want only the files from these directories to a single directory called mainDir.
Is there a way to copy a directory without copying the contents, but preserving ownership, timestamp etc of that directory?
I've looked at the cp man page, but I don't think it supports it. I'm thinking one would have to write a script to gather the info, and then mkdir, chown and touch. Does this seam right?
