Fedora :: LaTeX Documents Compiled - Are Different To Those On Mac ?
Jun 18, 2010Today I discovered a strange issue regarding LaTeX. I am currently working on my thesis and sometimes edit it on my laptop with F13 x86_64, and others with my office's Mac (Leopard). Fedora has TexLive installed (default Latex distribution) and I believe the Mac has its default distribution as well.
The problem is that the Mac seems to compile the document better (Latex + Bibtex + Latex + dvips + ps2pdf): page distribution looks better for one thing, space is better used. I notice that images (EPS) are rendered with an extra blank space on the bottom when compiling in Linux (which might be responsible for the page's arrangement).
Is there something I can do to fix this? Some option that perhaps the Mac has as a default but must be specified in Linux?

Dec 19, 2010I was trying to do a school assignment in LaTeX. The assignment involves having the page split into three columns: the first column is for the quote, the second is for a reaction, and the third is for questions. These columns must be able to break in the middle of a row. I was trying to accomplish this using LaTeX.
First, I tried the longtable environment, but that would not allow me to pagebreak in the middle of a row. Then, I tried parcolumns, but for some reason, the second "row" had a huge space between the first two words. Does anyone know of an environment suitable for this kind of work?
General :: Getting Emacs Recognizing .tex As Latex And Even Running Latex-mode?
Jul 5, 2010I am a semi-noob on this and I have problems getting my emacs recognizing .tex as latex and even running latex-mode. Usually when you run latex-mode (M-x : latex-mode) emacs should switch to latex-mode, but nothing happens in my case. The menu bar still show the TeX options, highlighting remains the same etc.
I am running emacs 23.1.1 (x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.10.4), this is on a university system so I don't know much about it.

Ubuntu :: Ability To Scan Multiple Documents Each Day?
Oct 14, 2010My needs require the ability to scan multiple documents each day. Ever since 10.04 my HP J4580 All-in-One scanner operation has progressively become worse. With 10.10 it completely quit working. As is so often the case, the HP J4580 All-in-One works flawlessly in Windows so I know it is strictly a Ubuntu related problem. Do a search of my threads and you will see that I have receive very little help with this issue. that is another problem I have been having.I have reverted back to 9.10 and all my scanning issues are resolved. I have followed several threads offering solutions with no success. I know the issue is with the removal of xsane from Ubuntu. Versions after xsane 0.996 is when the problem surfaced.On my system (desktop) I have been greatly disappointed with the last 2 releases. Firefox has even started having random crashes in 10.10. I tire of spending so much time trying to correct these issues.I will not quit using Ubuntu but I will not be using the latest two releases for a while. 9.10 worked great and I will keep it until support ends. You get what you pay for so I will not blast Canonical or the software developers. I would hope that prior working hardware would not lose functionality with the release of a new OS version.

Jul 7, 2010I am an astronomy student using Ubunut 10.04, and a frequent user of IRAF ( an *nix image processing application geared toward astronomy). IRAF produces, amongst other things, a text document with various values on it (example below).

Now, the information I'm actually interested is the X and Y coordinates down towards the bottom (in this case, 973.505, 271.474).
I have about 800 of these output text files, and I was wondering if there's any sort of script or command that could go through them (presumably reading from a list of file names), and extract the coordinates. Ideally, the output would be a list of coordinates (i.e. X-coordinate, Y-coordinate).

Jun 28, 2009I have some strange behavior in Latex. I have added labels to all of my tables (currently there are 3) and my figure (currently there is only 1). So far I only notice this behavior with tables, though it may happen with figures as well...I will have to add another figure to test that.However, what is happening is that my list of tables is correctly generating the numbers of the tables (which are 3.1, 3.2, and 4.1). In the resulting PDF document, the tables have the correct numbers in the captions as well. The odd thing is that when I attempt to reference them using ef, it is printing the Chapter.Section[.Subsection] number the table is located in instead of the table's number itself.Right now I have two tables inside of Chapter 3 Section 3. They are as follows:

May 19, 2010I have a very, very large log file (360MB) that I'm trying to thin out. As it turns out the majority of this file has entries that aren't necessary so I'm attempting to build a command that will strip these out. The following command works to display only the data that I do not want:

This displays exactly the data I want to delete from the file by displaying the expression and six lines above it and five lines below it. However I'm at a loss as to how to remove this data from the output and display everything else. I looked into the -v option with grep redirecting the output to a new file:

However it doesn't work, the new file is the same size as the old one. What am I doing wrong? Is there a better method of doing this? I'm a bit out of my element since the method I'd normally use can't handle files of this size.

Order of these lines are random... So I cannot delete line #19, for example... And you can see that top four lines I want to delete are pairs. So there might be some clever way to detect the lines, if a line has both "1.9" and "1.11", then delete the line... I am new to perl language. The following is the code I have now... I think I just need to write some code inside the while loop checking if I want to delete the line $dotline before I write to a NEW file.

Nov 13, 2010I have a huge binary log file. There are lets say 4 id's that I want to find in a log file. I know that those 4 id's will be present in the log file and I also know in what order they will be present. I want to find 1st id from the log then 2nd id and then third id and so on..
Simple/inefficient solution is: Loop through the id's and then grep in the log file. Problem with this solution is for each id grep will search from the beginning of the file.
Better/efficient solution would be: Sine I know the order in which id's will be present in the log file. Loop through id's, grep 1st id and then move on to grep 2nd id and so on...this way I can grep all id's in one pass. Is this solution possible ?
I have 500000 + values to find in log files and I have to find efficient solution for it.

I have to read first paragraph of variables and do some processing and then move on until the end of file. Variable names are same in whole file but for each paragraph the value is different. Is that because my file is too big for perl to handle ?
