Programming :: Cannot Find Header Files To Use Kmalloc()
Jun 16, 2010
I want to use kmalloc() to allocate contiguous memory on ram. But I can not seem to find the required header file(s) like linux/slab.h. I suppose I do not have the required library and I certainly do not know what and where to look.

I allocated a chunk of memory using kmalloc in a Device Driver. Kmalloc provides a pointer to the allocated memory. This is one of my first few drivers.
I assume that the address returned is a Virtual address. I need to find the physical address of the memory location. I am working on an Intel 64 bit Fedora machine. I used the virt_to_phys() routine present in <asm/io_64.h>. I found that this routine returns an unsigned long value (32 bit) instead of an unsigned long long value (64 bit). Moreover, it seems that it simply returns the address - OFFSET instead of extracting the value in the page tables.
So is there any function / system call in Linux which will allow me to see the actual physical address on the Intel 64 arch.

When is it good to use separate translation units and object files and link them into the main C program, and when is it good to include the header files in the main C program? I don't understand if most people include header files or if most people just link in object files and use their contents in the main program. It's sort of a simple question, but it's confusing to me and that's why I need help with it. I sort of don't understand the difference, or if there's really no difference other than the way the final result is achieved, which way is better or preferred, etc...
For example:
Code:
or:
Code:
Simple explanation of the difference? or which one is preferred or better? I've read a little on the ELF format... so is there no difference in the end result? It's just a matter of preference or necessity, and where the information is to begin with?

I have been a predominant Windows user for a long time but shifted to Ubuntu recently. I was just trying out a few basic C functions when i realized that the "conio.h" header file isn't included in the libraries and therefore i was unable to use the "clrscr()" function.
I downloaded a tarball which contained the necessary library and header files including conio.h. Once extracted, i specified the location and included in the program as " #include "path to the header file" ".
I still didn't call the "clrscr()" function, and it compiled successfully. Next i edited the program to call that function and it gave the following error...
How i can add new libraries in the future?

I have written a simple library and ended up with a .so file. I have a header file from writing the code that describes how to use the functions in the source code I have written. I think this .h files needs to be available to other programs that access this code.
I have seen lots of tutorials on how to copy the .so file to the relevant directories and make links with the version number. What I can't find is where to put the header file so that any programs I write to use my new library can access the header.
Hope this makes sense. For example, I might use <stdio.h> normally, I will need to access <mylibrary.h> once mylibrary.so is loaded (as far as I understand!)
It's weird, I've been using C compilers for embedded processors over ten years now and never given a second thought to how libraries and headers work behind the scenes!

I installed Codeblocks and build some programs, but I have two questions:1. Where are my header files placed, since I don't know where codeblocks is installed. Soemetimes I have to remove header file extension (.h) to be able to compile some source. I use gcc as setting for codeblocks to compile and build programs.2. Plugins for Codeblocks can be installed, but when browse codeblocks's wiki I can't find download links neither developer pages

I found this command that works great finding and replacing a simple string to another in files located in that folder and all sub-folders.
Code: find . -name '*.php' | xargs perl -pi -e 's/OldText/NewText/g'
The problem I have is that I need to replace a more complex string, like this: Old string: /mnt/stor6-wc2-dfw1/627896/982574/ New string: /mnt/stor8-wc2-dfw1/369587/302589/ There I don't know how to do it... since the / is what separates the old from the new strings, and the strings that I want to replace have / in it. Also, I would like to know how to specify under what folder replace the files, for example, I want that it search/replaces all files under /var/www/mysite/htdocs folder.

I want to make g++ find a bunch of header files in a very specific folder, that is not in any path without having to type out the -I command over and over each time I use a new command. any idea to make it automatically look for the headers in that folder. (please don't respond "move them to another folder where it already looks").

I have been asked to write a program to extract the width and height values from .gif, .jpg and .png files. For .gif I was able to find the values in the header records, but it is not so straight forward for the other two formats.
Does anyone know if there is a Linux utility that will do this for me?

I just installed a fresh CentOS 5.2 32bit system. I used "The Perfect Server" server document from Howtoforge and went through those steps and then added Webmin administration console. I then tried to install VMware Workstation 6.5 onto the system. I downloaded the latest VMware bundle, ran it and everything went fine. I then try to run vmware and I get the following messages

I am fairly new to linux but I want to write a function to find any file with only a partial name. I can only use sh shell and busybox applets for this.I could do something like the sad code below...
Code:
TEST_ONE=$(find /path/to/directory -name *$1*)
TEST_TWO=$(find /path/to/directory -name $1*)
TEST_THREE=$(find /path/to/directory -name *$1)
[code]....
fi I just made that up but obviously it is pretty bad I'm sure there is a much better way to do it but I just can't think of a way. I also would like to have the file found even if capital letters are used and the file is all lower case.

I have spent the last hour searching for a solution to this, but I can't get it to work. Here is what I am trying to do:
I have directories for different months in one folder. So for example Code: ../folder/Jan/
../folder/Aug/
etc. Some of the folders have a dot in front of the month as so: Code: ../folder/.Sep/
../folder/.Oct/
[Code].....
I am trying to find all the csv files EXCEPT those in a folder that has a dot. For example I want all the csv files in ../folder/Jan/ but I want none in ../folder/.Oct/.
I also want to exclude all the files in the /Aug/ folder that represent days 10-31.
Here is what I have so far: Code: find /some_path/folder/ ( ! -name "Aug[10-31]*.csv" ! -path "/.*/" -name "*.csv" ) | more This command lists all the .csv files except those in the /Aug/ files. So it just ignores the /Aug/ folder completely but lists every other .csv file.

I have log files that should be parsed and then deleted by a script on a regular basis. Sometimes things don't work for a variety of reasons and the log files sit and sit and are never dealt with. What I need is a small script that can give me the files older than X days and a count of those files.
What I have so far helps me take care of things manually but I need a little automation in my life Here is what I have: I can count all the files in the necessary directories recursively with this: ls -laR | wc -l And I can find all the files that are older than 10 days that haven't been deleted yet by doing this: find /home/mike/logs -type f -mtime +10 But how do I put both of them into a script that will just give me the end number of both?

I tried to update the header files manually in the include folder, because I thought that I needed to have windows.h etc, but now nothing compiles and I get a good 80 errors for even hello world. I have tried removing g++ and all related packages, deleting the header files folder and reinstalling, but it reinstalls the broken files. Any way of restoring the originals without reinstalling ubuntu?

I've installed Fedora 12 (KDE version) on VMware workstation running under Windows 7.
I've been able to configure the VMware tools fine up until this point:
Code:
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? After some searching online I deduced I should install all of the latest updates and kernel-devel.
I then nuked the previous VMware tools install and started over with it again, but alas, no directory I try works (i.e. /usr/src/kernels/, /usr/src/kernels/2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686/ and so forth).

If I put part of the command inside quotes the substitution occurs, but then I get other errors like:
Code:
cat:
No such file or directory
I could just write a small program to do it.
