The last few days I have had to reboot my Ubuntu-workstation when the screen suddenly goes black. After some seconds I get a pop-up with the message:
Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode
There is some buttons that tells me I can do different things (like reconfiguration ) but whatever I do I end up loosing all windows I worked in earlier. And having to reboot to get back full resolution. I have not found any way to reproduce this behavior. It has happened after being logged in for several days and sometimes just after boot and login when I'm starting an xterm and in all time intervals in between the output of:
sudo lshw -C display

Recently upgraded to 10.04 after countless problems w/ Karmic & already problems with Lucid! The screen sometimes suddenly goes black, then goes into low graphics mode, if I let it, thereby changing screen rez & unless I reboot, I am stuck in this mode. If I don't choose temporary low graphics mode, I must reboot. Many others seem to be experiencing the same problem yet have been offered no solution by the developers. So.

If I let my computer sit for about 10 minutes, I lose all the windows I had open (gnome) and i get a message saying I'm running in low graphics mode. I have to restart X in low graphics mode to get it to work. i can't tell the difference, but as an avid writer, I often feel the need to get up and think about whatever I have open in oowriter.

I have been pulling my hair out trying to find out why the Wine System Tray suddenly started appearing in its own little window when running Netmeter, cluttering up the desktop. I searched the web in vain, back many tears, most people saying they couldn't understand it when it happened to them.
Then I realized that the last thing I did was to stop Cairo Dock (the novelty had worn off!) and to move the Gnome Panel to the BOTTOM of the screen in place of Cairo. I suspected this was making the Wine System tray homeless.
So I moved the Gnome panel back to the TOP, restarted Ubuntu, stopped and restarted Netmeter and the Netmeter icon appeared back in the panel where it belonged.
Would I be correct in thinking that Wine System Tray will only stay in the panel if the panel is at the top of the screen?

Where are the graphics stored for window controls? They change with the theme, so they must be part of the theme graphics. Specifically I'm looking for these: In Lucid's Ambiance theme, they're little plus and minus boxes. I prefer the rotating arrows and want to edit the theme to replace them.

Recently i have installed centos 5.3 from a 'CentOS-5.3-i386-bin-DVD.iso' which was downloaded about an year ago.It was conflicting with my graphics card(Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500 integrated graphics subsystem) from the very beginning as i was unable to install it in graphical mode.So i did a text based installation and selected the 'Gnome' mode.But whenever i type 'startx' or Ctrl-alt-F7 ,Linux is unable to open the x-window and show a huge error regarding its inability to detect monitor resolution or graphics card.My hardware's are Intel quad core 2.33Ghz processor,1.96 GB ram,Intel Dg41 rq motherboard and on-board graphics card(X4500).

The problem started with that I got a lot of errors about missing header files included from SDL_mixer.h when I attempted to compile my projects. I looked in the directory of this file, and all header files were missing except SDL_mixer.h Resolved this by compiling and installing the base SDL library package. Programs that got recompiled and were able to play music before suddenly produced no music, but sound effects worked. However, old binaries that were compiled prior to the issue with the missing header files played music fine. What the heck is this? I get no errors, nor warnings; none at compilation, none on execution. The kernel pool (dmesg) is clean. There is also another strange issue, which perhaps has nothing to do with the first issue. x86_1$ ./fire XDM authorization key matches an existing client!Couldn't initialize SDL: Couldn't open X11 display.

Is there, by chance, a fancy name to describe code that must be in a program but will never be executed? In one of my (Haskell) programs, I have some error-handling code that must be in the program to keep the compiler happy (due to the type checking). However I know that, due to the logical structure of the program, it is impossible for the code to be evaluated. I am curious if there is a technical name given to code that must exist but cannot be executed.

If I put
Code:
$r = exec('whoami');
echo $r;
into my php script, it works fine. However, if I put
Code:
$r = exec('myX11application');
echo $r;
it doesn't (to be precise, the script still works, but myX11application is not executed). Of course, scripts are run by user "apache", who doesn't have access to X11 server and doesn't even have DISPLAY variable defined.I installed virtual framebuffer Xvfb, created a small bash script:
Code:
Xvfb :2
export DISPLAY=:2
myX11application
and called it with exec from php, but it still doesn't run since it looks like Xvfb can't start if the normal X server is running (I need that for development purposes). The reported error from Xvfb is
Code:
(EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed (2)
Is there a solution to have php running your X11 applications with normal X server running?

I'm looking for a general pointer, or label for what I am trying to do. Not a specific line of code. I've written a couple of small sh script that gets some user input, then calls several programs to run in the background with the &. My problem is, they all run at the same time. Is there some way to get these jobs to run sequentially rather than consecutively? If yes, what is this process called? I'm thinking there should be a way to line up background jobs in a job queue, similar to how a print queue works, one job at a time. After searching for a couple of hours, I'm thinking there must be a name for this, but I don't know what it is.
