Programming :: SDL Static Library - Shared Library ?
Apr 7, 2009I'm reading about shared, static, and dynamic libraries. What is SDL? Is it static, shared, or dynamic?
I always thought a library would be a lot of .h and .cpp files compiled separately into .o files and then if you compiled your own program you could use the -l parameter to link the library and it was all compiled together. Now I'm not so sure.
I don't even see any SDL .cpp files in my system anywhere. All I have are lots of SDL .h files in /usr/include/SDL and I don't really understand the code in them.
I'm making a wild guess here: SDL is a shared library. SDL itself is NOT compiled into my program, therefore SDL must be on any system my program tries to run on. When I compile and link SDL all it needs is the header files to know what SDL function and objects it can use. And then on every system it uses an already compiled SDL shared library thingy somewhere.
So... where is that part of SDL? All I can find are header files.
I'm thinking the advantage of shared libraries is that someone could say update SDL on their own system and take advantage of the new features without having to download new executables with the new version of SDL compiled into them for every program that uses SDL.
So if I'm making an editor and a game engine and they both use a lot of the same .cpp and .h files that I wrote and I'm tired of updating one and then the other and I need to turn them into a library, then a shared library might be kind of a silly solution. I could just make a static library. Right? Because it's not SDL. Nobody else is ever going to use this library.

CentOS 5 :: Move System And File Structure To New Box
Feb 7, 2011I am new to Linux and not sure how to explain what I want to do, but I will give it a try. I have a system running CentOS 5.x on a system the is dying. Is there an easy way to migrate the system over to a brand new system that I recently purchased? I only have / and swap partitions, so nothing fancy; however, I have read that Linux is nothing like Windows when it comes to applications, and I could simply drag and drop files on the new server; however, I suspect that there is more involved than that. I hope I can just move the files over, and the system will boot; however, I am worried about new hardware on the new system. I am looking for recommendations to this issue. I am not sure if I have described it correctly; however, just point anything out that I need to change.

Oct 1, 2010I have a mxn matric (which is my simplified way of saying it is RAM with bytes on it) Some of the locations on this metric is filled with some data and some places are empty. The mxn are very big numbers in size. I am trying to make a program so that if a system call wants to write some thing on empty locations on this mxn metric it should be able to do so without any problem. The thing which I want to understand or logic of a data structure is what data structure do you people feel should I be maintaining so that I can allocate the requested space immediately from the above mxn matric when some system call requests for some (k) number of locations from above metrics.
The logic initially I thought was to maintain a hashtable
1bytes requested----------> location 1,location 2,location 3.........location n
2bytes requested----------> location 1,location 2,location 3.........location n
3bytes requested----------> location 1,location 2,location 3.........location n

but the problem with above logic is size of the pointers where I will be writing this problem is unsigned 64 byte.So to know location of one free byte if I am maintaining one pointer of type u64 this is not a feasible solution.

For this I started writing a program.The first entry point is to define a graph. I took a pen and paper and made a graph. Now to be able to code this in C.I defined a structure but I am finding problem in defining this structure. Programming :: Structure Pointing To Character Array
Aug 9, 2010I am currently writing a program using raw sockets. This program is used to send out ARP reply frames. The problem that I have is that I do not seem to be able to fill out a structure that is pointing to part of a character array.

Whilst I can fill out the variables of eth, I cannot fill out the variables of arp. If I fill them out and then send the contents of the array using send to, only the first structure (the ethernet header) is sent out. The rest of the data appears to be the original junk data in the array. I have checked the address of the structure pointer and it is pointing to the right place in the array. If I write a raw sockets program that uses an IP header struct and TCP header struct I can point these into the array and write to both of them without any issues.
The difference here is that the call to socket is different:

Debian :: Moved Whole Root Structure - System Inaccessible?
Aug 14, 2011I was looking for some way to make 'watch folder' and I found and installed inotify and incron. Explanations were perfect and everything seemed great. So I made test script and it worked as expected.
Now, bash script that was evoked by event by incron consisted this terrible line:

mv * /some/folder/
...
which I expected to be run from watched folder, but instead it is run on holy root /
Rest is tragedy: everything was moved to this folder and I can't access any command. Terminal was opened but it did not accept commands. I cd to '/some/folder/bin' then tried to execute command but no luck. I tried also Ctrl+Alt+F1 - same.
What can I do except reboot. Now what? Grub rescue failure prompt. I went in BIOS to make it boot from separate SATA HD with Windows 7, but it somehow isn't listed there. I can't think why. I tried from this Live CD to move folders to correct location, but it's Permission denied
[edit] Re-reading now, in terminal command 'cd' (change directory) was working, but sure not ls, mv and others. Maybe I could have done something, but probably not, network connection was lost, music stopped playing everything was vanishing...

Nov 15, 2010Options:A double linked list with fixed size character arrays. New nodes will be added when previous ones get filled. Dynamic arrays using realloc(). Linked list has the disadvantage of not having an O(1) search like an array but I think using realloc() will be more dangerous since it moves the whole block to a new location and if the new location is not big enough to hold the whole block, realloc fails !! this case will not occur with the linked list since its nodes are scattered.

Jan 25, 2010How can I disable structure alignment feature of gcc using command-line options ?I recently migrated to 64-bit OS, and doubt that I might be experiencing a structure alignment problem due to the new 64-bit architecture.I checked the sizes of the same C-style struct in both x86 and x86_64, and found out that they appear to be different by 20 bytes.I am not sure if this is due to structure alignment or the differences in data type lengths between two platforms.Hence, I will first disable the structure alignment feature, and then check the struct sizes again.

General :: Recommended Directory Structure For Application System Development?
Apr 27, 2010I have to set up my development environment under OEL 5.4. The internal directory structure is more or less fixed, the question is where to put the whole application tree in standard FHS for the development phase.For production, the system will be deployed on a server where data is kept with an Oracle 11g database. Development goes with JDeveloper which has its own internal application/project directory structure; however, I whould like to be independent from this. Unfortunately, by carefully studying the web for FHS, if I will adhere to it I only find ready-made packages to put under /opt, for example. No development aspects are mentioned. make some proposal, possibly with respect to best practices.

The issue which I am having is that, when it does the search for the correct row to be inputted into valuecheck, it will input the value as written in the database, which is in Uppercase. For this case, if I type in stupid for $Title and jerlyn for $Author, it searches the correct row, but the awk will print "STUPID" into the variable as that is what is written in the database. So how can I make my if statement case insensitive? Currently it reads like this:

if the address of stWndClass is 403000h, WHY it would be compile as mov eax,[esi+403004] and the first one would be mov eax,[esi+4]? I know how to get the values 403004h and 4,but do not know why.
