OpenSUSE :: Package Updates - Repository Priorities And Vendor Change
Jul 19, 2010I read a few threads about updating packages in opensuse 11.3, and about switching to a repository, but I still don't understand a few things. On earlier versions of opensuse I was used to set the repository priorities in an order that was convenient for me, and when I did an update, the vendor changed if needed.
Now, vendor change is not allowed by default, and I don't understand the right way to handle repositories, and updates. I found out that in Software Managment there is an option to allow vendor change, but I'm not sure that's the right way.

When I tried to turn it on some of the lights came on and the caps lock and num lock started flashing. Since then I have not been able to get it to work correctly.It once seemed to turn on but died again after the login window.I tried to use my live cd but the same thing happened. It started loading once, but then shut down again. Every other time it stayed dead minus the lights

Jun 12, 2011I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on an old Sony Vaio laptop. I was following some of the steps here..[url]
The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.
The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. The apt-get command gives me back the following....'Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock resource temporarily unavailable' 'unable to lock administration directory /var/lib/dpkg is another process using it?'
I tried the obvious restart but that hasn't worked.

I have Googled this one to death but found nothing. This problem existed in Xubuntu 9.10 and now still exists in Xubuntu 10.04. The keyboard I use is a Logitech Elite Keyboard. I would love to be able to use the Caps Lock and Num Lock without the worry that I am disabling the media controls

May 27, 2010I have just burned the latest CD using infraRecorder, as per the instructions on this site, however when I boot from this CD, it spends about 5 minutes moving the red balls across my screen, then all of the sudden it just freezes, and my caps and scroll lock lights start to blink. I've had a look in the forums already but there's nothing about this happening on Boot of the live CD.

Jun 23, 2010I'm wondering why the num lock doesn't work in Ubuntu anymore? When you press the "num lock" key, you're supposed to be able to input the numbers along with + - * / and decimal point. When I press num lock and try typing numbers, nothing happens.
I've done a google search and this is a well known problem that nobody has fixed. In Windows it's never a problem.
Seems such a shame that the great Ubuntu and Linux are so good for stability and speed, but can't get a simple num lock working.

This update broke a software tool from Xilinx (FPGA compiler). I rolled back all of the above, to 2.5-58.el5_6.3, and the tool works OK. I get:

Jun 18, 2014I want to disable mounting usb storage devices except some devices based on its vendor id. I tried by adding below udev rule in debian wheezy

Apr 22, 2010This is for the Linksys AE1000. This may work for other USB wireless network adapters, but I don't know for sure. Here is the original information ( Ubuntu's Forums ) about a very similar card. It clarifies that you need the 'rt3572sta', and some modifications are required to the source from ralink's website to include your Vendor and Product Id. Then modify a few files, and away you go. Step 1) Retrieve your Vendor and Product Id. Easiest way is doing 'sudo tail -f /var/log/messages' and then plugging in your USB device.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Elgato / Lsusb Shows The Device But Don't Get A Vendor Name?
Jan 3, 2010I'm really trying to get the Elgato Eye TV Diversity working with Ubuntu (I'm trying it on both Karmic and Hardy)
The problem is, lsusb shows the device but I don't get a vendor name, just an ID.
dmesg shows a usb device being detected, but not that it's a TV tuner.

Sep 30, 2010I am trying to install a vendor provided driver in Fedora 9 kernel 2.6.27.25-78.2.56.fc9.x86_64. Apparently the vendor stopped officially supporting Linux a number of years ago, so there were a few things I needed to change in the source code to get it to compile, now I'm trying to install it. Make runs successfully, but when I try to "make install" this happens:

I've tried finding a solution via Google but it seems that the majority of people solved this problem using sudo, but I'm using su already and this still happens. I've also gone into make menuconfig and modules are enabled. I have access to the makefile and all the source code, so if something needs to be done there I can do it. If anyone has any ideas, please don't leave out any details; I'm a complete newbie when it comes to Linux
OpenSUSE :: 11.3 Kde Constant Lock Ups?
Jul 18, 2010Doesn't matter what application I am using this thing locks up tighter than a prison cell. I can't seem to do anything but reboot at that point. 11.2 never had this problem on this computer. I'm running a nvidia gt 220 card without the nvidia driver. Could this be the problem? I really don't know what to do about it. I was running the default kernel, but switched to the pae kernel as I have 4 gig of memory. Still locks up.
Probably should have stuck with 11.2 for a while longer, but at this point I would like to get 11.3 working. If not I will just go back to 11.2.

Nov 13, 2009Possibly a silly question, but here goes...In 11.1 and below I set a key shortcut to lock the screen when I push Meta+L. However, I can't seem to find a way to do this in 11.2. I tried the following:* I looked in the keyboard shortcuts settings page and didn't see an option for screen locking* I tried right-clicking on the screen lock button on the panel and setting the shortcut, but that doesn't seem to have taken effect* I googled and searched this forum, but no luckThe default key combo seems to be Ctrl + Alt + L, which works, but I have years of muscle memory for pressing Meta + L, so I'd like to preserve that if possible

Mar 7, 2010I've been experiencing a strange problem with Plasma locking up. Running system monitor it shows the KDE4 process using 20% CPU time, and Plasma around 10-15%. This seems way too much since on my six year old Laptop the cpu load of both processes is barely noticeable. My Laptop is an old single core 3000+ AMD Athlon 64, while my Desktop has a Quad core Xeon 2.33Ghz chip, so the fact that the KDE4/Plasma system load is many times higher than on the Laptop, indicates something is wrong.
I'm not sure what else to look for troubleshooting wise, any suggestions? *Actually, thinking about it, the KDE4 process is timing out one CPU core, which indicates to me something is really not right.
