Is anyone else using KDE 4.5 and getting hard freezes when changing any of the appearance settings like the desktp background or window decorations? Then when you have to reboot the background is back to what it was before?
View 9 RepliesI installed the new 9.12 cat drivers in the usual way (init 3; rpm -e the old drivers; generate new rpm; rpm -i new drivers; init 5), but instead of starting like I expected, I got a blank screen and what appeared to be a hard lock (keyboard lights don't toggle, Ctrl + Alt + Backspace and Ctrl + Alt + F1 don't do anything).
I switched back to radeonhd, but I'd like to get the proprietary drivers working if possible.

Every once in a while I have noticed in the the morning that the computer is hard locked, meaning what ever was on the screen is still there (or just blank for screen saver), the machine is inaccessible over the network, and there is no kernel panic message in the logs.
This last time around my brother was logged in and he had the screen saver turned off, so I could see the exact time the clock stopped updating, and it read 7:00am. The var/log/messages log lists its last mark at 6:59:29.
A thought came to my mind the other month to check power stability because both my router and my network switch had a history of doing odd things even though I was using a line conditioner. After replacing the line conditioner with an APC Back-UPS XS 1500, both the network switch and the router have been perfectly behaved, but after a few weeks of continuous up time my Ubuntu system hard locked again and I don't know why.
Here are some hardware details:
m/b: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5
CPU: Intel 940
RAM: 12 GB @ 1066 MHz actual (1333 MHz rated, but can't do with banks fully populated.)
RAID: 3ware 9650 SATA-II 8-port w/ battery backup
Video: PNY nVidia 260 GTX core 216 based card with 896 MBs RAM.
P/S: Seasonic S12 650W (80Plus certified)
The Hardware: A 2 month old Asus EeePC 1008HA. 1.66 Ghz Atom, 1 Gb RAM, GMA945 integrated graphics, 160gb HDD. The OS: Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix (also tested regular Ubuntu 9.10 and Kubuntu 9.10 LiveUSBs). The Problem, In short: Ubuntu locks up after 5-30 seconds of logging in. Most of the time the Capslock light starts flashing, indicating a kernel panic. Also happens when booting off a LiveUSB, although using the ACPI=Off option from the LiveCD allows it to run without crashing.
The Problem, Long Version: Up until yesterday afternoon, the netbook had been working fine. I plugged in my 3G USB Modem, and Ubuntu locked up, with the caps lock light flashing, only way to restart was by holding in the power button until the netbook turned off. Unplugged the USB, restarted, plugged it back in again, same thing happened. Didn't use the netbook again for a few hours, but when I next came to use it, the netbook would crash shortly after logging in.
I ran MemTest for 8 hours over-night, and it came up with no errors. Figured it might be a corrupted HDD or install, so I reformatted the hard-drive and tried to re-install UNR 9.10, however the LiveUSB will also freeze shortly after the desktop is displayed. Using the ACPI=Off option let me at least boot in and re-install Ubuntu, however it's still crashing after logging in. Fsck comes up clean. If I use the ACPI=off option in GRUB, the netbook will boot, however it'll be very sluggish and will crash as soon as I try to connect to a network (Wireless, wired or USB 3G).
The clean UNR9.10 install uses the 1.6.31-14 kernel. I've somehow managed to get it sort-of running with a net connection and a terminal at the moment, so I'm running an update to see if that will fix anything, but I'm not too hopeful.If this is a hardware problem, that's fine, since the netbook is still under warranty, but I'd rather exhaust all my software solutions before I send the netbook away.
I've recently had my file system irrecoverably corrupted after a hard lock-up. This has happened to me before, a couple weeks ago, and both times I've had to reinstall. I don't know what is causing the lock-ups (possibly the binary nvidia driver..), but I would like my file system to be intact or at least recoverable next time it happens.What is the "safest" way to mount things?
I'll be using ext3 with data=journal, but I've read that disk write caching combined with a kernel crash or power loss can still screw things up. Supposedly, mounting with barrier=1 helps some, but doesn't work with LVM? Would it be wise to turn off disk write caching completely? I understand there's a performance penalty, but if it helps keep the file system consistent in case of disaster.
I just downloaded OpenOffice 3.2.1 from the openoffice.org weebsite. I followed the instructions precisely and everytime ended up in the same error message - 'error: can't create transaction lock on /var/lib/rpm/.rpm.lock (Permission denied)'. I am using Fedora 13.

I have a HP Pavilion dv4 that is 4 months old. Yesterday it suddenly seemed to restart then once I logged in it turned off. When I tried to turn it on some of the lights came on and the caps lock and num lock started flashing. Since then I have not been able to get it to work correctly.It once seemed to turn on but died again after the login window.I tried to use my live cd but the same thing happened. The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.
The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. The apt-get command gives me back the following....'Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock resource temporarily unavailable' 'unable to lock administration directory /var/lib/dpkg is another process using it?'
I tried the obvious restart but that hasn't worked.

I have Googled this one to death but found nothing. This problem existed in Xubuntu 9.10 and now still exists in Xubuntu 10.04. The keyboard I use is a Logitech Elite Keyboard. I would love to be able to use the Caps Lock and Num Lock without the worry that I am disabling the media controls
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just burned the latest CD using infraRecorder, as per the instructions on this site, however when I boot from this CD, it spends about 5 minutes moving the red balls across my screen, then all of the sudden it just freezes, and my caps and scroll lock lights start to blink. I've had a look in the forums already but there's nothing about this happening on Boot of the live CD.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm wondering why the num lock doesn't work in Ubuntu anymore? When you press the "num lock" key, you're supposed to be able to input the numbers along with + - * / and decimal point. When I press num lock and try typing numbers, nothing happens.
I've done a google search and this is a well known problem that nobody has fixed. In Windows it's never a problem.
Seems such a shame that the great Ubuntu and Linux are so good for stability and speed, but can't get a simple num lock working.

Doesn't matter what application I am using this thing locks up tighter than a prison cell. I can't seem to do anything but reboot at that point. 11.2 never had this problem on this computer. I'm running a nvidia gt 220 card without the nvidia driver. Could this be the problem? I really don't know what to do about it. I was running the default kernel, but switched to the pae kernel as I have 4 gig of memory. Still locks up.
Probably should have stuck with 11.2 for a while longer, but at this point I would like to get 11.3 working. If not I will just go back to 11.2.

However, I can't seem to find a way to do this in 11.2. View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been experiencing a strange problem with Plasma locking up. Running system monitor it shows the KDE4 process using 20% CPU time, and Plasma around 10-15%. This seems way too much since on my six year old Laptop the cpu load of both processes is barely noticeable. My Laptop is an old single core 3000+ AMD Athlon 64, while my Desktop has a Quad core Xeon 2.33Ghz chip, so the fact that the KDE4/Plasma system load is many times higher than on the Laptop, indicates something is wrong.
I'm not sure what else to look for troubleshooting wise, any suggestions? *Actually, thinking about it, the KDE4 process is timing out one CPU core, which indicates to me something is really not right.
In KDE 4.5.2 I can't find where to lock up NUMLOCK. How do you do to have numlock on all the time? I have /etc/sysconfig/hardware/keyboard/kbd-numlock already on yes. If I try to change it I have an error : kbd service is not started.

When I execute the command below, does mysqldump lock all tables while the backup is in process? I want to make sure this is the appropriate type of backup command for MyISAM database.

I had to force kill the yast, however, it didn't had chance to unlock the files it lockes while it workes. I know there is a way to manully unlock them, but don't know how to do it

This sets up all my password requirements and this works. Now I need to crack getting the account to lockout after three failed attempts. Let me know what files you need to see in the pam.d directory and I'll paste them in.

When I left the machine the screen saver kicked in and wouldn't let meback on with my password I chose during installation (and the only password I chose!) Re-booting the machine sorted the problem...until next time! I have now disabled the lock out for the screen saver so things ought to work now, but why did it do this? New with openSuse!
View 9 Replies View RelatedI remember this was discussed some time ago but I cannot find the thread any more. I was just wondering if others are still seeing the same problem . I've had this all through 4.4.3 and now with 4.4.4. For some reason if only the logout or lock button is selected and placed on the far right of the panel then part of the button is chopped off. This only happens with the panel locked. If both buttons are selected then they display correctly. I also notice that when only one button is selected that it's size is slightly smaller than when both are selected. Also it only seems to be the logout/lock widget that has this problem.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAt times, the disk I/O will go through the roof and cause the system to slow to a crawl. X becomes really slow and can go completely unresponsive, dropping all keyboard input, preventing me from restarting X. Sometimes I will switch to a virtual terminal to log in and run iotop to check what is using all the I/O, but it will be so I/O bound that the login times out. Sometimes I do manage to get in and can run iotop and then it is a matter of waiting 10 minutes or so for python to load up. Usually by this time, whatever was causing the slowdown has finished and so I don't even know what the problem is. Other times it never recovers (I once left it over night, since it was at the end of my work day and just went home)
This is my work computer so it is very inconvenient to have to wait for this I/O blockage or lose all my work rebooting. I thought it was due to swapping, so I disabled swap, but that hasn't helped. I'm running the cfq I/O scheduler, but I've tried both deadline and noop.
Also, is there a way to disable the login timeout so I can at least get logged in to the box from the console when this happens?
On my windows console, i have installed sun virtualbox. I only have 768MB ram and so i downloaded a trial version of eboostr. I thought it would work, but when i tried an install of 11.2, also, i tried a debian install, it did the same thing, it froze up in the middle of the install with the error Code: unable to allocate and lock memory. I guess that eboostr doesn't work, but is there a way to use a flash drive as ram in virtual box?
