But now when i log into my gnome session as "normal user" and open a gnome terminal, then trying to launch a graphic application such as gedit or any other application that relys on X, it returns a problem such as:

File downloads would reach some percentage of completion, then B/s would slowly reduce, to zero. Upgrade would halt until manually aborted. Solution was to manually download 5 timezone files and install them in a directory repository. File download did not specify just the timezone file, but also a part of the directory. Could this be part of the problem? example: ./rpm/i586/timezone-2011d-0.2.1.i586.rpm instead of just the file name.System is a Dell 3000 (Pentium 4, 512MB memory).

my gnome searchtool crashes everytime I search something. Runnung gnome-search-tool from terminal I get the following error:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to debug a gtk app on ubuntu that crashes from time to time when I open a dialog. Lately I have found a sequence of actions that always reproduces the bug. And I always get this error: Assertion 'pthread_setspecific(t->key, userdata) == 0' failed at pulsecore/thread-posic.c:200, function pa_tls_set(). Aborting.
So my app seems to crash because an error in pulseaudio, which is strange. I made some google search and apparently, this problem exists with other apps. Then, following a suggestion in a bug report, I opened sound-preferences and disabled windows and buttons sounds. And surprise? No more crash. I know that gtk handles events from windows and buttons and so does pulseaudio. So, could it possibly be a bug in pulseaudio instead of in my app? Does anyone have an idea of what's going on here?

I've tried changing the permissions of the file, with no luck.
So I installed this system with the net install disk. I really don't want to do that again. It said it needed one update shortly after install and I figured that a net install would pretty much be up to date and I would be fine to wait on that for a day or two. Wrong. I used bit torrent for about 20 hours and downloaded ~60 GB's to the external hard drive. After a while while clicked the little update button closed every thing else then hit apply.
Walk off, come back and the computer is completely non-responsive and the monitor is not getting a feed from the tower. Not even any num-lock blinky light action on the key board. I gave it a minute or two to show any kind of life then turned it off. It came back on well enough to get online and post this but, like the title indicates, that package manager appears to be broken in some way. In Debian based systems there is a command that clears this up. Is there an equivalent for this distro?

The above pertains to a fire fox update of some kind. I still have the install disk handy but would rather not wait the 3 hours it takes to download the packages. How I can fix this. I switched from Ubuntu to SUSE because it is supported by online learning soft ware I have access to.

The red updater icon alerted me to about a dozen patches, which started to install, then halted with an error: Download failure from download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.2/repo/non-oss. When I try to update repositories, the same error recurs for that repo and also for .../oss and download.opensuse.org/update/11.2/,
If I attempt to "register for support to get update repository," clicking on Configure Now and Next produces the same three error messages: "Failed to download", one for each repository. The screen then returns to Registration, with another error message "an error occurred while connecting to the server". Clicking on the Detail button show exactly "ERROR:"
This AMD desktop machine with this install of 11.2 has updated many times in the last few weeks. Has something changed? The update servers do respond to a ping, so they are up and apparently I have connectivity.

I do not run my connection through a proxy and my internet works correctly. This is on a laptop I upgraded using zypper from 11.3 to 11.4 (I did the same with a desktop which does not have this issue). zypper refresh successfully refreshes the repositories, and the various Yast repo tools all work correctly. Additionally after I am shown the updates and am prompted for root pw, the packages will no longer show up for a while, each time it tries to look for updates the message comes through but they will show up after a while again. The other issue I have is that it requests my pw multiple times, this also happens on my desktop that actually will update. I get prompted twice, they are immediate and back to back. This one is a little minor annoyance but there should be no reason that it needs to make this request multiple times.
I am trying to create a launcher in Fedora 13 which will run a simple script named proj4a. I run this script from the command line as follows: $ /home/enowak/proj4a >/home/enowak/proj4a_out where proj4a is an executable file in my home directory and the output goes into a file, proj4a_out, in my home directory. Everything works fine.
I created a launcher called Proj4a and in the command field I entered the following: '/home/enowak/proj4a >/home/enowak/proj4a_out' When I click on the launcher it comes back with the following: There was an error launching the application. Details: Failed to execute child process "/home/enowak/proj4a >/home/enowak/proj4a_out" (No such file or directory) I can't for the life of me figure out what is wrong here. I just installed a program and do not know what is causing this error. When I run it from the applications menu I get the following error "Could not launch 'FirstClass Client' :Failed to execute child process "/opt/firstclass/fcc" (No such file or directory)". I opened up a terminal and looked at the location. The file is there. I do not know much at all in this area but do not understand why this error is occurring.

PHP5 was having an issue compiling, (started with trying to compile in OCI8 support, which is the biggest nightmare i've ever dealt with). I finally just ran it with ./configure --prefix and no other options. It installs successfully, but when restarting Apache 2 it fails with krb5int_key_register.PHP was working fine previously before rebuilding to include oracle. First error i included with Oracle was redefinitions from ldap.h within the Oracle/sdk/include directory. I need LDAP support, so i removed the ldap.h files since im using the library from openldap. LDAP was previously working perfectly fine before reconfigure. Tried to load shared module via pecl/pear, but PHP would not init the module even though it was added to php.ini.
I am running F11 and I want to mount an FTP, but when I try to connect to an ftp server using Places -> Connect to Server, or the bookmarks I made I get an error that says 'Failed to execute child process "/usr/lib/firefox-3.5/firefox" (No such file or directory)' and sometimes it mounts anyway, but most the time it doesn't, and it never connects to the folder I asked it to, I just have to open the mount and navigate to it. I figure this happened because Firefox upgraded to 3.5.1 and the folder is now /usr/lib/firefox-3.5.1/firefox, but I don't know how to update this so that it looks in the right location.

"failed to execute child process skype-wrapper" First test out if skype runs from the command line, by running this in a terminal
Code: skype & If it runs, you're good to go: simply right click on the menu, locate your entry for skype and change the command to launch it from skype-wrapper to skype. The reason for this is that in the 2.1 version, skype needed a script called skype-wrapper to set some varibles before start up. Upgrading removes the script, but failed to update the menu entry.
