I use an internet connection with a proxy. I have set the proxy in Firefox and systemsettings so now I can browse the web and I can ping Google from Console. But when I start Software Management, it says "Cannot access installation media". Whats wrong?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI did a fresh installation of openSUSE 11.1 i586. Everything worked fine. Then I used YaST2 Software Management to add a package. Worked fine. Then I did the Online Update to get the Installation up to date. Worked fine so far. I had to restart the Machine because of the Kernel Bugfix Update. Since then, the YaST2 Software Management is not working any more.
When I do start it, it starts the software manager, shows the "Search Phrase" and so on but when I enter a word and press "RETURN" the software manager immediately closes and takes me back to the YaST2 start screen. No messages, no warnings, nothing. With zypper I am able to install software but no longer within YaST2.
When I change the "Put display to sleep when in active for" it seems to make no difference. The screen goes to sleep when it wants. Some times in the middle of watching a dvd (after about 10 mins when it is set to 1 hour).Could this be done by terminal, perhaps there is a problem between entering in the GUI and actually telling the machine.

If I'm away from my computer for only a few moments, the screen is on dim when I return and I have to log on again. On the same PC (as transmission-daemon) I tried http://127.0.0.1:9091/ but is not working. Why is not working out of the box ?
Whatever settings I use in the power manager, (Ubuntu default Gnome Power Manager) nothing appears to change. Screen brightness does not change when moving the slider, but is reduced after 5 or 10 minutes (haven't timed it. Probably whatever is default) of inactivity, even though the reduce screen brightness checkbox is unchecked. The latter is pretty annoying when watching online TV streams, especially since the video also exits full screen mode when the screen brightness is reduced.
The weird thing is, as the title implies, that when booting in recovery mode with FailsafeX the power settings seems to work. At least the screen brightness varies as the slider is moved I should probably mention that it is possible even in normal mode to adjust the screen brightness by using the buttons for adjusting screen brightness on my laptop (Fn + arrow up/down)
Everytime I restart my PC and the login, Before the login window goes away a window pops up saying "Power Management has stopped working" If I click cancel nothing happens, if I click Logout Anyway then the window goes away and I continue to login. Whats up with that? I am using a Desktop.

I have been using 11.2 for a few days now and have noticed a few things that are different from 11.0 and was wondering if there is anything I can do to change them to my liking.When I want to install software thru Yast>software>Software Management I can install the software I choose OK, but it does not ask if I wish to install more software when it is done. The Yast control center stays open, but the Software Management window closes.I must reopen Software Management to do more.It is a small problem, yes, but annoying to me.Is there anyway to set it up so that it will ask if I wish to install more?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have selected to power down the monitor after 30 minutes, and suspend the computer after an hour. It does not work. With Beagle not running (more below), the monitor powers down after 30 minutes as expected. But then later (probably after an hour?) it powers up again and stays that way. Not exactly what I envisioned.I have removed Beagle from the set of running processes. The process list ("ps ax") shows Beagle as a serious consumer of CPU time, far more than any other process. (At termination it was at 500:00; the next most hungry process was /usr/bin/Xorg at 10:00. Most barely get over 0:01.) It introduces these problems:
1. after some amount of system idle time (it is about 5 - 10 minutes) Beagle starts consuming vast wodges of CPU time. I have dual core AMD 5200; both CPUs run up to about 70% usage until I do anything, like move the mouse. Then the usage drops back to the usual 5 - 10%.
2. When Beagle is thrashing the CPUs, the power management monitor thinks the system is busy. And powers down nothing.
I've attached a UPS to my server through USB. and sure enough up came a tab in Power Management Preferences for the UPS -- great.
There are power low options as follows:
"When UPS power is low"
"When UPS power is critically low"
The UPS sends a message to the computer when a threshold you set in the UPS is reached, in my case 25% of battery left.
The obvious guess is that this warning from the UPS is the "When UPS power is low" however, I don't know. It's just a guess.
Looking further at the data I can get from the UPS the battery data is as follows:
battery.charge: 100
battery.charge.low: 25
battery.charge.warning: 50
battery.runtime: 760

However, again, that's just a guess from what would make sense.
So my first question is, is there a way to know this information, and is there a place were these critical points are set, or are they all from the UPS. I'm guess there are some settings somewhere because not all UPSs are going to be able to supply this information. Some may only supply a battery level or some just a warning message so there must be some configuration for this somewhere.
My 2nd question is a probably a little harder to know the answer to. After getting this to work I wanted the added functionality of nut so I installed it and got it working and it uses the On UPS Power panel as far as I can tell.
Through all the nut documentation it talks about powering down on once the battery level reaches the critical point (I assume that is "When UPS power is critically low"). I don't see anywhere however where it mentions handling "When UPS power is low" so now the question comes up, will it have any effect at all with nut installed, i.e. what will happen?
Of course I can just "pull the plug" and start finding this stuff out but Linux is all about having the information and "knowing" (assuming all works as it should) I am asking to find out where this information would be -- and become smarter for it
When I open the software management , I get the message "There was an error in the repository initialization.". And when I try to install anything I get the message "bla..bla locale::facet::_S_create_c_locale name not valid". In the terminal I typed

I'm not sure about anybody else, but I have spent many hours today trying to figure out how to get Compiz as a window manager. Alas, I have tasted success. Once compiz and Emerald are both installed, simply go to Code:Configure Desktop > Default Applications > Window Management and then select from the drop down menu.Now those beautiful emerald themes will work. I have seen many other 'solutions' for KDE4 and they may have worked for some, but not for me. I hope this will help somebody who may be as frustrated as I was.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI might switch to OpenSUSE from Debian, but I have my doubts still about package management with OpenSUSE. I'm glad to see that zypper now has the --clean-deps option. Is there a YAST GUI for this as well? I don't like the command line very much. Additionally, is there any way to remove a package with all its config files? In Debian with the Synaptic front end, you can right click on package and click "remove" and it will just uninstall the package but leave its configuration files intact.
But if you select "Completely Remove" it will remove all the configuration files so that if you later install the package again it will use the default settings once again. Is there any way to do this with OpenSUSE? Again, I'd prefer a GUI. Does 11.3 offer Delta RPM updates, and are there many repos that offer delta RPMs? Does Zypper cache downloaded packages by default? And using the YAST package management GUI are packages caches by default? If so, where? Does the YAST GUI try to refresh the package cache all the time, or can I do it manually?
ISTR seeing that
% zypper up -t package
was the equivalent of
YaST | Software Management | Packages | All Packages | Update if new version
available
(without SuSEconfig of course) is this the case, if not, what is the equivalent zypper command?
I've got openSUSE 11.4 64 bit system with stable 2.6.38 kernel and KDE 4.6.3. Problem is that when I want to change some settings in the power management (like brightness, screen energy saving time-off, display dim), they doesn't seem to save, even after the X restart and full reboot. It's seems like screen energy saving is set permanently for couple of minutes, don't matter what time do i set, it just discards my settings, even they are correctly viewed in the gui.

I can get my ethernet connection working through YAST... but I *really* need the wireless to work as well... so can somebody *please* tell me why KNM is being so stupid, and how I can fix it? I've already done this for my user profile, and I've attempted to do it for the root profile, as well, but when the GDM login screen is shown, the laptop still suspends when you close the lid.

I tried to achieve this by disabling 'Enable display power management' checkbox in the 'Configure Desktop -> Display -> Power Control' KDE configuration dialog. That didn`t help and display still goes into standby mode after some period of inactivity. Also, I tried to disable dpms functionality by calling 'xset -dpms'. That didn`t help too. Note that 'xset dpms force standby'
I finally convinced my wife to remove Windows from her Acer Aspire 5680 and instead to use OpenSuse, but unfortunately I am having some major trouble for no reason.
You see as soon as I installed the OS, I tried to add some new programs, like Thunderbird, etc but I keep getting an Accessing the Package Management failed error message. It says that it can't continue because process 9172 is blocking it. But I opened the System Monitor and can't find the **** 9172! My OpenSuse installation doesn't have this problem.

I am trying to reduce my uptime of my servers. I would like to have a way to bring the systems down during off hours, an come back online during first use. I know about WOL (wake on lan) found in the bios, but it seems as if the OS is missing something to complete the configuration.Are there any good docs (of which I havent found any yet, which is why I ask) on this topic? How about best practices to assist in power management?
View 5 Replies View RelatedJust found my PC with screen fully lit a good half-hour after leaving it. Went into "system settings" and checked the power-management settings and, as I expected, there were no management profiles. "Here we go again" I thought and logged off and then back on again. Checked the settings and there was "performance", the only one available. As usual in this situation, I'd tried "restore default profiles" and there were none.
Why does this profile keep getting lost in this manner? Where is it (and defaults if any?) supposed to be stored?

After an installation of SUSE 11.1 the software management hangs short after it started with YaST2.Kwin sends a message that the Window with title YaST2 is not responding. Only the termination works.What could be the reason, and what could help? Could you assist me with your knowledge?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just switched to opensuse from fedora. So far, I like it a lot (KDE FTW). However, I am having a couple issues concerning hibernation and restarting.Whenever I merely close my computer but don't shut it off, I am forced to reboot. When I open the computer after closing it, everything stays black and nothing seems to work aside from a restart (no good, I know).When I restart, network management is disabled and thus I am prevented from accessing wireless. The only solution I have found is to hibernate, which for some reason fixes the problem. A restart however does nothing. So I guess I have two questions:1) Why can't I close my computer without turning it off?2) Is there a more permanent solution aside from merely hibernating after a crash that will fix network manager

Annoying problems I have with Yast2 Software Management?
1. Sometimes when starting Yast2 Software Management it fails to connect to the SW repositories. It happens inevitably (i.e. without exception) at the first attempt after a fresh boot up, and sometimes otherwise. I can only retry or abort, and retrying usually brings no success anyway. Is it perhaps due to a time-out somewhere?
2. If I click on the 'abort' button (see above) or 'cancel' in Yast otherwise, I inevitably (i.e. without exception) get the following type of error message

I am running OpenSuse 11.3 with Gnome.
I have downloaded and setup the SUSE Lifecycle Management Server on vmware using the Live CD Distribution. I have connected it to Susestudio.com as my repository and setup a user account via the backend on pg 96 using the slms-admin-ui-user -o to create my administrator account since I lost the password for the initial login. I created a customer and have the following:
Mirroring Credentials - User Name: (random character)
Mirroring Credentials - Password: (random character)
Also I have a test box for installing the Live CD of our application. Do all appliance created on suse studio have the client to connect to the SLMS server or do need to install a client? If there is no client how do I obtain and add it to the appliance on susestudio.com ? How do I setup appliance as a client?
