Ubuntu :: Is There Some Way Of Recreating Or Recovering File I Need?

I've been using Evolution for several years no without problem. Yesterday I started getting the message"Error while openinghome/name/.evolution/mail/local#inbox".The mail is all there in local/inbox.sbd, but I can't find any way to tell the program this. I've got it all backed up on Dropbox, but can't find any trace of a #inbox. At least nothing with that name that's been recently deleted.Is there some way of recreating or recovering the file I need?

I made a mistake and during the setup created a seperate swap partition and noticed that using this on a usbstick hindered performance. So I want to simply add the swap to the same partition as root and the others. I used this ubuntu help file. Will this suffice:

I have a file that stores employee login IDs, names, types, and permissions. Our software reads the information based on byte-columns, so it reads a column as any ASCII character (spaces, letters, numbers, punctuation, etc.). I want to create a web-interface for adding and removing users, and storing the data in a MySQL database. However, if I am creating the files from the MySQL output, I need a way to write to specific column locations in the file ...
User ID: Columns 1-4
User Name: Columns 6-30
Type: 32-40
Permissions: 42-45
I want to use a scripting language, preferably C-Shell, to call MySQL for the data and write the data to the correct columns of the file. I wrote a script that takes the data from the file, and dumps it into the MySQL table, so maybe I can pad the remaining space in the table column to fill with spaces ...

A friend had a 320 gig hdd he wanted me to back up. I saved all the files in a folder "Documents & Settings" and even made a 7z archive out of it. I used a 1tb mybook and copied the files to it then tried to delete it. Now i had recovered the files using ubuntu, but moved them to my windows partition. When i got on windows 7 and tried to delete the directory "documents & settings" i got an error saying some files had names that were too large or something like that. So i went on ubuntu and deleted the files from my windows partition without moving them to the ubuntu partition.
Well my 1tb drive just broke so i lost the files on there. Now im trying to back the files up using ubuntu. I am running scalpel at the moment, and it hasnt found anything at all. I really dont know if i set up the configuration file right. I just started scanning my other hdd that contains the linux boot. It has just started so i am not sure if it will find anything or not.
But incase it doesnt, how do i set up the config file to find the file? There are two things i deleted off of my windows partition. a 7z file archive which was the 9GB directory "Documents and Settings" zipped, and the actual folder Documents and Settings.

I've just tried to open an .odt file which says it's corrupt and cannot be recovered... The last backup I can find is from about a month ago and is 10,000 words shorter than the corrupt version.I have no idea why the file has suddenly become corrupt

I was trying to decrease the size of my main partition so I could create a secondary and install Windows 7 to.I was using Norton's partition software. My computer had to reboot and before reaching Windows XP it started doing the resizing. For some reason it failed in shrinking my main partition. I'm not sure if any harm was done while it was trying to do this.I proceeded to run the Windows 7 installer, under the impression I could just install Win 7 to the same drive and leave all my personal files alone. Right when the installation started during the "Copying files" stage I hard reset the computer after getting nervous and changing my mind..
I booted up Ubuntu Live and found that my main file system had been cleared, and only a few tiny temp Windows 7 installation files where there.I am sure there were no deep formatting done, only a quick format by the win 7 installer. there is any software I can run in Ubuntu to scan the drive for files to recover them, because the new file system overwrote the old one.

I had a raid array working great in 9.04 with mdadm, and I just recently upgraded to 10.04 (clean install) and I'm trying to reassemble the array and having a dickens of a time.When I try to recreate the array with:

I've deleted /etc/apache2 and did run:

sudo apt-get -o DPkg::Options::="--force-confmiss" --reinstall install apache2.2-common
to get the default config back.
But starting the server via:

The funny thing is that the exact same definition is in a debian lenny server config on another server. So why did this install a not working config?
I just removed apache2 via:

sudo aptitude remove apache2
sudo rm -r /etc/apache2
and reinstalled it via:

sudo aptitude install apache2
which also did not fix the config bug?
For testing I installed apache2 on another ubuntu 9.10 and did just copy the folder /etc/apache2 to my local installation - this fixed the problem. Still, why cant I reinstall apache2 with a working config?

I was creating dual-boot WinXP on my machine with F10 allready installed.
On my 1st try, windows froze when inspecting hardware, so I deleted boot partition with fdisk and then it works.
I installed succesfully XP on last partition on my drive, but XP won't boot because of hal.dll error (forums says it can be repaired by changing boot.ini).
Now what I want is to create new boot partition to reinstall grub.
I'm trying to do that from gparted live cd:
From gparted live, i entered console and did "fdisk /dev/sda".
When i type 'p', here is my output:

when I try to type 'n' to create a new partition, it tells me "No free sectors available".
Before /boot was on /dev/sda1 (Start@1, End@13), and NTFS was on /dev/sda13.
How can I recreate boot partition?

I didn't know where to post it exactly. You can see the Screenshot at the Tab bar, and it's not the only thing that bugs.. Many things and pictures disturb like this, from Desktop wallpaper and files and folders, to text and pictures.

While trying to create a bootable SD to install Ubuntu on a netbook, I accidentally formatted a part of a removable HDD that was connected to my computer. If I remember correctly, the partition I formatted wasn't the main partition of the HDD. In that case, does it make sense that the whole disk was wiped out? On that HDD there's a year worth of work, I really need that back.
I was using PhotoRec with some luck: it started to recover files, but with no names, which is almost useless, considering a lot of it are recordings - useless without their names. Is there any good recovery program that will recover all my files incl. names? Is there a easier oprtion, considering that I think I didn't really format the big partition of the HDD? What may it have been, the small partition?

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a 100 GB partition of my 120 GB hard disk. I left the other 20 GB as free space. I moved my data (about 20 GB) to my home folder. Everything was fine for two days. Then I installed a few packages with the help of Update Manager.he installation, I was asked to reboot. Upon reboot, I was always taken to the Memtest86+. It was as if GRUB wasn't detecting my ubuntu installation.Then I installed Ubuntu again by taking up 20 GB of the existing 100GB partition. I am currently using this installation. When I try to access the older installation (the 80 GB one), I find that all my data in my home folder is broken. I have a 64-bit HP G60 Notebook and I installed Ubuntu 10 The problem is that if i want to recover Windows 7 from the Partition I can i pressed Esc and selected Recovery but it said wrong filesystem then when booting Ubuntu i wend down to Windows Vista Loader and it opened HP Recovery but said there was a problem. I want to get Windows 7 back with all HP Factory software installed

[URL] ppl have told me to ditch wubi and just have a clean install so i guess i will since it seems like the only option ppl are recommending to me. but i need to get my files of ubuntu first. i cant get into root.disk thu win7 so i am running live cd atm. but in live cd i do no see it also. where are my files?

So I've pulled two hard drives out of my busted windows xp system (dead mb) and I'm trying to get some data off of them. The drives are in raid 0, so my friend told me that I might be able to do something if I use linux. Some late night searching on the internet directed me to a few resources, one of which was this forum. I've tried 2 methods, neither of which have worked.
1. mdadm
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mdadm --detail /dev/sdb
mdadm: /dev/sdb does not appear to be an md device
2. dmraid
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo dmraid -s

My powerbook died (motherboard or something...). I took out the Hard Drive to mount in an external enclosure. I tried accessing the drive in both windows and mac - no luck. So, I thought I'd try it in Ubuntu, thinking maybe it would show up - no luck. My question: is there any way to access the files from my drive using linux? Is there any way to mount it? The drive is spinning, and when I enter sudo fdisk -l ; I get this:

I had an Ubuntu installation on my laptop, on an encrypted LVM (this was /dev/sda1).
I was planning to write an Arch Linux image to my USB drive (/dev/sdc1), following this guide - [URL] USB_Installation_Media#Overwrite_the_USB_drive. Instead, I accidentally overwrote my Ubuntu by using
dd if=archlinux.iso of=/dev/sda
Is there any hope of recovering my Ubuntu installation, or is it totally hopeless, and I rather recover as much data as possible?

I need to get back two avi movie files but I've deleted hundreds and any recovery might try and drop them back on my small hard disk and overwhelm it! I know the files include the word 'Archer' but I'm using Formost, which is very easy to use, but it doesn't seem to allow for the searching of specific files by name. I can recover by type ie, avi, jpeg, pdf.....
Are there any recovery programs that will list files in a table so I can pick the ones I want to recover or do a search in Terminal for my 'Archer' files?

After realizing 10.04 Final doesn't support Intel 855 graphics card the hard way (upgrading to 10.04 from 9.10), I did some very silly things and now cannot even choose past kernals or go into failsafe graphics mode (which had worked prior to this).Long story short I screwed up GRUB. Because I am an amateur end user.I still have the 10.04 live cd. Can I reinstall this to put GRUB back to the original state?

A friend of mine somehow managed to accidentally format her USB key the other day. It had all the photos of her daughter on it and she's more than a little upset about it.
I've told her not to fret too much just yet and that I'll have a look to see if there's any way to recover any of the data (specifically the photo's, she's not overly fussed about the rest)
I've had a look through the web, and foremost looks like it's the most promising option but I don't want to start messing around with it until I've asked my fellow ubuntu users for advice and thoughts.

I have recently gotten hold of a device that helps me plug my old ATA/IDE hard drive to my computer and view my old files that I wish to recover. I am using Ubuntu and the harddrive that I wish to retrieve the data from also has an Ubuntu install on it. The files I wish to recover are old .doc files, which I want to keep to remember my old writings.
The problem I have encountered arises when I wish to open some of the files. The icon for some of the files, which happen to be my best writings, has an X on the top right, indicating that I cannot view the contents. When I click on the files, the following error message pops up: "Access to /media/c885571b-a6e5-4a2d-937a-78af7050910/george/Courses/hist388/Passion.doc was denied."
Now, I am guessing that I need to be able to log in as superuser or something to be able to access these files, so I logged in my terminal as super user by following the instructions outlined on this page: [url]
I still did not have the sufficient access required to be able to open the files that I would like to retrieve.
