I have multiple servers, all of which have the same account with the same password, setup by someone who know longer is around. Is there any way to figure out what that password is, so i can create the same account on a new server without having to reset the password on all the other servers. I'm not sure what resetting that password would break on the others, so I dont want to do that.

Now i am not able to access my hard disk since it is completely locked. Is there any way to decrypt the password or unlock it. Lately when i open my computer i encountered failed in loading system. its goes like this. Unexpected error, run fsck manually...log in as root. I have to log in as root and type fsck try to fix bad blocks. the mandriva ask me to reboot so i reboot my computer. after loading system, in log in screen. I click my username then type my password and press enter. There is a message prompt on me. "Your home directory is listed as:'/home/Gonzalo' but it does not appear to exist. Do you want to log in with the / (root) directory? it is unlikely anything will work unless you use a failsafe session.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was installing Ubuntu to the internal disk in my main machine, with all external drives unplugged for safety - then discovered I had accidentally chosen the external drive and it wasn't unplugged. (Seeing three drives not two listed as installation targets should have tipped me off, but I guess my IQ was low that day.)The external drive, in compliance with Murphy's Law, was my backup drive with all vital current files.The last few months of work gone.Now the drive shows only the stuff I normally expect in / on any Linux machine. It mounts showing as ext4, but the disk was (I'm 98.5% sure) originally ext3.However, the installation did not finish.Whatever files got copied, clobbered only a fraction of the disk. df reports only 1% of the space used.Maybe the bulk of my valuable files are okay, and could be recovered with some tool?
There are other questions on this site about file recovery, but many are for Microsoft Windows, or for malfunctioning disks, or some other situation. I'm on Linux with a physically healthy external disk. I'm fairly sure that the more recent and more important files are in multiple copies on that disk, so if one copy is clobbered there's hope to get the second copy.

I started Puppy-Linux from DVD-Drive. Worked fine. But puppy can't mount her /dev/sda1 partition either. At least you can see that the partition is still there. Fsck stops with an error. May be the initial problem is a sort of bad hardware by which bad bytes were written to the hard drive. Hard drive and/or memory could be replaced but not the data.
I was trying to install Debian 5.04 on a Mac G4, and in typical geek tradition, I didn't RTFM. During installation, I nuked all existing partitions, creating new to my liking. But as I learned later during the installation process, yaboot needed a NewWorld partition, so I can't boot the installation. I don't have any OSX CDs with me (this is a used G4 I purchased of craigslist) with which to create a HFS partition.I've re-run the Debian installer, which lets me create a partition that is supposed to be of type 'NewWorld', but the installer does not seem to like it or recognizes it.

Is there a way to recover NTFS partition now ? The partition </dev/sdb1> was 'ntfs' and mkfs.ext4 did not check if it was a ext4 or give any pre-check warning, just went ahead with making the ext4 fs on a ntfs partition.
I needed to install a new OS on a new HD but i also need the data on the old HD which has some problems (it doesn't boot anymore). The problem is that in the old one i had linux (Slackware) and so it doesn't allow me to view the content of the folder /home/myself. If there was something possible to do to recover all the data or if it will be forever lost.

This was originally plugged in to my NSLU2 running Debian Etch. I have just installed Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 to a spare Pentium-3M laptop and was hoping to copy the contents of this HDD to a fresh drive. However, I cannot mount it even read-only; mount -o ro /dev/sde3 /mnt/disk fails, and the /var/log/messages error is "recovery required on readonly filesystem", "write access unavailable, cannot proceed". I cannot understand why mounting a disk read-only should require write access. Following advice I googled elsewhere, I tried running mke2fs -n /dev/sde3 to try to list the alternative superblocks - but once again I got the error that the device was read-only. How can I go about accessing the data on this disk?

So, today when I tried to ssh to the host, I get the typical "WARNING: Your password has expired". Fine, no big deal. But when I enter my new password and confirm, instead of giving me a login prompt, it tells me passwd all auth tokens updated successfully, then next line, "Connection to <host> closed". I can re-ssh back into that host and all is well from here, but it's a nuisance having to go through the extra step. Is this something in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config somewhere or perhaps a PAM config issue?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI Tarred and GZipped most of the data on one 1Tb partition and stuck the archives on a second 1Tb partition on a separate disk. I then proceeded to format the first partition with NTFS (from Linux.) The only problem is that I completely forgot that I had a CD drive and formatted sdc1 instead of sdd1! I began doing a full NTFS format and after a minute or two I cancelled it and decided to do a quick format. I then realized my mistake. I managed to find a copy of the superblock and began trying to recover the disk. fsck -t ext3 recognized the partition as NTFS but I luckily didn't have fsck.ntfs installed so it didn't touch it. I managed to get it working with fsck.ext3 (with -b,-B and -y) fsck.ext3 didn't mind that it was an NTFS partition.
Roughly how long will this take? It's running from Knoppix within a virtual machine to a USB hard drive which is 100% full. Days? Being that for a few minutes I attempted a full format am I going to end up with a bunch of corrupted archives? If I do end up with file corruption can anyone recommend a way of recovering the data / sorting it out? Is it likely to be just a few old files that are corrupt (It's my understanding that filesystems like to keep files in the same area on the disk to minimize the amount of head travel.) This might just be wishful thinking but as the filesystem fills up will ext3 put the newer files towards the end of the disk? If so then I'm hoping that a full NTFS format starts at the beginning of the disk.
Lately my screen has seemed to go out on me a number of times--mostly, I think, after the computer has been sitting and has locked and dimmed. I come back and use the mouse/touchpad to get to the login screen, it does not respond. That is,the computer responds but not the screen--I can see the login screen very, very dimly.ut it won't brighten to a usable level. Most recently, it darkened as I was starting to type in my login password.If I power down the machine and reboot, the screen comes up fine, so I think it's a software rather than hardware problem.
