OpenSUSE :: 11.2 And KDE W/ OpenOffice Writer And Klipper?

Nov 28, 2009

Open two different instances of OpenOffice Writer (two separate entries on the task bar). In one of them type the word test and highlight it and leave it that way. Now using the mouse pointer try switching between these two different OpenOffice Writers on the task bar. There shouldn't be much of a switching delay if any, going either way.

Now go to the OpenOffice Writer with "test" highlighted. Hit the <ctrl>C (copy) key about five times rapidly, then immediately click the mouse on the other OpenOffice Writer on the task bar. I am seeing up to a 5 second dead time delay between switching. There is no "busy" indication from the mouse pointer. The mouse pointer moves, but any clicks will not take effect during the 5 second delay, then any mouse clicks quickly take effect in a cascade after the delay is over.

Sometimes Klipper looses the <ctrl>C (copy) "test" text (Klipper still displays it its history) and refuses to <ctrl>V (paste) "test" any longer. When Klipper reaches this state a single <ctrl>C (copy) of "test" will cause the up to 5 second delay when switching.

The delay is only noticeable if you immediately switch on the task bar. If I do the copies and simply wait at least 5 seconds before switching, there is no delay. So, the switching itself isn't the cause.

I have reproduced this on PCs in a 32 bit 11.2 install and a 64 bit 11.2 install. Both installs are KDE 4.3.3 release 3 repos. Either this long delay shouldn't be happening or the mouse should at least do its busy indication thing and not act like everything is normal when it isn't.

OpenSUSE Install :: Wireless Connection Disappearing With Login

Jan 13, 2010

I installed openSuSE 11.2 onto an HP Pavillion dv5-1040 (openSuSE as only operating system), first from net and then from CD. Initial installation took place around 20 December, and is still going on (!). After much back and forth (installing Atheros 928x drivers etc etc), I was able to get the wireless network up and running (perfectly).

The PC was set up such that I would be logged directly in at boot. For security reasons, I wanted to have a login with username and password, and I was able to get that going (unfortunately). The side-effect was that I am no longer able to access the network! I have been extensively searching the net find a solution, but without success. I strongly suspect that the solution is to set one or more parameters in a script, but what parameters in what script?

Ubuntu :: Using Klipper In Gnome?

May 10, 2010

Glipper just doesn't hack it so I use Klipper on my Gnome desktop, however my clipboard entries are not saved across restarts of the window manager. I suspect that's because GDM just kills klipper rather than signaling it somehow to quit. I've tried all of the signals that I though might work hoping that one of them would cause klipper to save the clipboard but none worked. So has anyone figured out how to save the clipboard history in klipper when the window manager or system restarts like in KDE? I know I can quit klipper but I forget to.

OpenSUSE :: Disappearing Applications From - (windows Open And Minimized) Panel

Jul 29, 2010

I am running a week old 11.3 install with KDE (no desktop effects), compiz, nvidia. Last night I was working away. I had Thundertbird, Firefox, and VMWare Workstation open. Maybe something else, but I don't remember.

I was typing away. Maybe I hit something on the keyboard, but maybe not. All apps just disappeared, meaning that they're windows were not open and were not minimized to the panel. I could open *new* windows, and I fire up a terminal and ran top, which showed that they were all running, just not visible. Obviously, this is a Bad Thing.

Ubuntu :: Klipper Not Working In Gnome On 10.10 Upgrade

Oct 29, 2010

I recently updated from 10.4 to 10.10, and klipper (KDE clipboard manager) stopped working?? It's buggy, ctrl+alt+V shortcut is not working anymore, sometimes it just crashes randomly - simply - it's not working.

On the other hand, Glipper (gnome clipboard manager), is working quite nice, but it crashes every time on the startup, which is painful, having to add "clipboard manager" every time on reboot to my traybar.

Can I somehow.. downgrade Klipper to earlier version which is more stable? Or can I make sure that Glipper is not crashing on every system startup? I tried clipboard manager for XFCE, but it's very modest to say the least, and doesn't have shortcut for opening menu with latest clipboard entries etc.

On reboot, they are saved in ~/.kde/share/config/kglobalshortcutrc but don't work anymore. they are visible in "system settings > keyboard and mouse > global shortcuts" in the klipper tab, but just wont work. However, they are not set if I try to access them by klipper menu "right click > configure klipper > shortcuts" It seems that shortcuts aren't even noticed by kde : xev's output from a successful shortcut ( alt+g) (notice the focusout/focusin instead of the keypress):

Debian Configuration :: Klipper Icon Has Disappeared From The System Tray

Jul 2, 2010

I'm running squeeze. The klipper icon has disappeared from the system tray and I can't figure out how to restore it. The service is running. Stopping and starting it has no effect. Changing the display options for the system tray has no effect. I can bring the klipper dialog up with Ctrl-Alt-V but there are no options available regarding the system tray.

It's obviously a user configuration issue since if I login as root the klipper icon is displayed. I tried to copy the klipper configuration file contents from root to user, but that also had no effect, except to alter some non-relevant options. I haven't been able to locate any other configuration files that might be relevant. This seems to be a not uncommon problem with klipper, but the causes seem to differ. I haven't found any solutions vi Google.

Slackware :: Klipper Doesn't Always Store The Latest Clipboard Contents In Its History In Kde 4.3.5

Apr 10, 2010

klipper doesn't always store the latest clipboard contents in its history in kde 4.3.5. I have "ignore selection" and "separate clipboard and selection" set in Klippers settings. When i open a new program, for example - kwrite, type some text in it, select some of it and hit ctrl+c - copied text doesn't show up in klippers history list. It seems that klipper misses the first copy operation done in newly launched applications, only by copying the same (or some other) text again klippers menu entry shows up. This seems to happen with only newly launched application, when i had kwrite window already open, opening a second window and performing copy worked fine with klipper.

Ubuntu :: Systray Not Showing TrueCrypt Icon - Sort This Out?

May 18, 2011

As in the title - When I use truecrypt it (normally) puts an icon in the systray. I need to click on this icon when i've finished with the volume in order to unmount the volume and exit the program. This is very important as I share this volume across computers and it can't be mounted on more than one at a time.

However the icon does not play with the new unity DE, not showing up at all, and leaving me with only one option - to open a terminal and find and kill all TC processes. Obviously killing processes in this way is technically not ideal and is time consuming too.

Any ideas how to sort this out anyone?

Fedora :: 14 - Disappearing Menubars ?

I recently made the hop from Ubuntu to Fedora because I wanted a bit of a challenge and I had grown tired of Ubuntu constantly breaking stuff with each release. So far, Fedora's not bad (I've gotten my GeForce 9400 GT working with no major issues save for the x-something-or-other boot message), but I have run into a strange error: menubars no longer appear in any of my GTK applications! Firefox and OpenOffice work fine, but OO is Java-based and Firefox is pseudo-GTK, so I don't really understand what's going on here. The Global Menu Panel Applet is an alright workaround, but I want my menus in my windows!

Ubuntu :: Printer Still Keeps Disappearing - How To Fix It

May 28, 2010

I've also shut down both printer and PC, disconnected the cable between, and also pulled power cord of printer. Reconnected everything and powered back up. The things I tried in both the thread and the cable bit only worked for one time. Then on the following day it would disappear again. It worked beautifully when I first did the complete install of Lucid last month when it came out for final release. But last weekend it started disappearing and when I do get it to show it seems to be only temporary. Has anyone found a permanent fix for this? Is there a "hard fix" for this being worked on from the developers?

Debian Multimedia :: K3b Is Disappearing Tools

Jul 6, 2011

I was experiencing some latency issues when loading KDE on my (squeeze) HTPC box, so I decided to replace the system drive with one that was a bit faster (and larger). Faced with the unpleasantness of having to repeat the many troubleshooting and configuration issues I had with the previous installation, I decided to copy a known good installation. As it turned out it didn't make much difference. I still spent several hours reconfiguring screen and font resolutions, setting up a wireless bridge, removing unnecessary server components, reconfiguring apt proxy settings, resetting hostname and IP addresses, and getting passthrough audio working again.

Anway, once completed, the system was much more responsive, so I was happy--until I tried to burn an ISO to the DVD. When K3b loads it informs me that it is missing several necessary applications, including cdrecord, cdrdao, mkisofs, etc. All the necessary applications were installed and working on the original system which I copied. I verified their existence on the new installation via "aptitude search <packagename>". I even performed a reinstall of said packages. Nevertheless, K3b refuses to detect their existence.Just to be clear, all my boxen are built to standard. Same motherboard, same CPU, same memory, same HDDs, same DVD burners. I do this purposely to avoid just these sorts of issues. I don't see how a working configuration on one machine can fail on another. I am beginning to believe that this is yet more evidence to support my theory that the universe is not only unpredictable, but arbitrary and inconsistent and possibly even perverse.

Fedora :: Legend Of Disappearing Directory

Jan 28, 2011

Allow me to set the scene. I have a 250g external HD that I use to store large things that I don't need often and don't want cluttering up my laptop (I don't have much space to play with on it). This external is formatted with a 200g ext4 partition for storage and a 50g FAT32 so that I can play back movies and TV shows on my Xbox and don't have to watch them on the netbook.

So there I was, moving my collection of Firefly episodes to the "xbox partition" from the ext4 "storage partition". Terminal is whizzing along and all is right with world. Then the power goes out. For a moment I think, "I'm fine, I'm on a laptop". No cigar. My USB hub is externally powered, which is excellent for charging cellphones. It sucks for moving files, it seems. When the power went out, the hub switched off and my drive was disconnected mid-operation. When the power was restored, a few moments later, I try to navigate back to my source directory and redo the file transfer.

The power outage had claimed nearly 100g of video, much of it difficult to replace. With a quickening pulse, I briefly panicked and reached for my recovery live cd, complete with testdisk. Then I remembered that I was on linux.

Ubuntu :: Disappearing Cursor In Karmic 9.10

There are several things I like about Karmic, but I only migrated to it from Hardy so that the ATI drivers would work correctly for my new HD5770 graphics card, otherwise I would have stayed with Hardy. how I can get the mouse cursor to stay visible all the time?
