On my Ubuntu 8.10, gvfsd takes up 128.6MB memory. What is the process doing actually? Can I reduce the memory it takes?
View 2 Replies View Relateda few months ago i did a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04 64-bits. it works perfectly. i'm using firefox 5.0, and in about it says mozilla firefox for ubuntu canonical 1.0.
every now and then, firefox behaves like a runaway train and starts using up all available memory, and using 100% processor time. this has been going on for a week or so. the only remedy is to kill firefox and restart it.
i'm not sure what causes this problem, but i am starting to suspect that it may be caused by flash, java, or some other plug-in or add-on that i have installed.
my add-ons are:
- adblock plus 1.3.9
- adblock plus pop-up addon 0.2.7
- delicious bookmarks 2.3.1
- delicious extension 2.3.1
- flash-aid 2.1.1
- global menu bar integration 1.0.6
- memory restart 1.4
- stumbleupon 3.91
- ubuntu firefox modifications 0.9.1
with the exception of memory restart 1.4 all these add-ons have been installed for a long time, without ever causing any problems. the problems started before installing memory restart.
my java version is icedtea, installed from the repository. i'm frequently using sweet home 3d (a java program) that runs without any problem. it doesn't make a difference whether i have sh3d running or not, the ff problem occurs regardless.
i also have installed ubuntu restricted extras version 43. videos videos don't cause problems. vimeo videos cause problems on occasion when switching to high definition and/or to full screen, but that is a known vimeo problem.
the problems certainly start when i don't use my computer for a longer period of time. i have disabled the screen saver/energy saver, but that doesn't seem to solve the problem. today i had the problem shortly after visiting a website, reason why i'm starting to suspect that the problem could be linked to some plug-in that website uses.

I'm trying to run a logging server with encryption but rsyslog takes 100% of the memory on boot. This only happens when these two sets of lines are both in the rsyslog.conf

I run alot of Linux running in memory. Mainly by PXE booting a kernel and the entire OS as the "initrd" file.
I have a RHEL6 image running as a VirtualBox guest and the entire OS (minimal) is contained withing 1GB of disk. I wan't to boot the entire /dev/sda1 "/" (its the only partition on the drive, no swap) as the initrd file and run everything from memory. But grub won't let me. So before I try and re-invent the wheel I thought to post here first.
Details. RHEL 6 as guest in VIrtual BOX. configured with 3Gb memory. HD is single partition and known as /dev/sda1.
at the grub console. I issue
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-19.el6.x86_64 root=/dev/ram0
initrd (hd0,0)
But the grub windows just freezes. Apparently it doesn't like the fact that I've referenced the entire partition (hd0,0) as the initrd. Any thoughts? Or any better boot loader like SYSLINUX?
BTW, I am not worried about the /etc/fstab mentioning /dev/sda1 at this point, I have a fix for that already. I would like to see grub load up the partition as an initrd.
we found that if we use 'top' to show the memory usage of a server (SuSe Linux 10), we can get virtual memory usage as well as 'Resident memory' usage. For virtual mem or a particular process, it is around 1.1GB, which is large but for resident memory, it only consumes 300MB. Are there anyone who knows what the differences are? I would also like to know whether the difference (1.1GB - 300MB) = 800MB are actually available for use by other applications in the system.

I don't want Windows at all anymore and on the new openSUSE install I just want swap, root, and home partitions.The installation goes fine, but it says my drive is 465 GB not 500, I think what is not showing is my old Windows System partition. I can't see away from within openSUSE to increase the size of my home partition after the install either.With my limited linux skills I think the simplest solution would be to just format the whole drive then install openSUSE. I tried to do that with some XP CDs, but none of them will boot, they keep listing various errors. I tried putting the drive in an external holder to plug it into another computer and format it just using windows, but windows won't recognize it.Using some free live cd/USB I don't know about

I am running opensuse 11.0 on Intel Quad computer. A month ago I have installed DNS service on it.
Since then I have a following problem - sometimes named starts eating 200% of CPU and that causes LAN to hang down. Everything goes normal after named restart.
I have a Kingston 16GB Flash Drive ( the storage should show around 14.5 GB I believe). When I right-click, and go to properties, it only shows a maximum size of about 6.5GB. I cleared the files off of it and formatted it, and it still reads as 6.5GB. It's about a year old, but has not been used very much. I used it a few times to boot off of it, and run Linux ( ...just to try new to me distros) but from the looks of it, there are no partitions that I forgot to take off. I haven't even really used it that much since I got it. Where did my storage space go?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMain reason I am using openSUSE currently is because my Windows system's went bad. I haven't been able to easily restore and will probably have to do clean windows install. I want to make sure my entire openSuse system (application/OS setting/etc) backup so I can easily restore of it fast. Since this type of back takes awhile, I would preferably like do this while I am still logged into SUSE. I am where to disk cloning thing like clonezilla, but looks like I would need turn of my system entirely to get this done.
Currently my SUSE root and home are in a partition with another NTFS partition on my hard drive. I really don't want to use 'dd' to clone the entire hard disk. I would much rather store of required partitions in other locations. Hopefully, there is easy to get this done without too much of effort and time.
I've got a somewhat anemic box, resource-wise, set up in the office where any authorized user plus a guest account can log on. Guest is tightly restricted, but we get a lot of people passing through who need one-time or occasional access - this isn't the big problem. What's causing me problems is that a user will log in, walk away or go to the john and the screen locks. Next user (or this one comes back) and winds up doing another login. At the end of a week or so, I may have a couple of dozen sessions listed when I ask for "users". Since some of these session contain open applications they eat up an awful lot of a marginal amount of available memory. How do I kill the entire session (as root) for a user? Gotta be simple but it's not obvious to me.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWe are looking for a solution that allows us to restore a servers "identity" in the event of hardware failure...ie Name, IP address, dhcpd, named configs etc.
We have ISO images of the appliance images that contains all the software and stuff. There is no real data on these servers.
If we backup the entire ETC directory and perhaps the /var/lib can we simply restore that and get everything back?
What concerns me is how some versions of Suse use UUID for the network config and the mounts points.
Gnome-keyboard-applet takes 16MB or RAM. This is million times the total amount of memory my first computer had. It included the whole operating system and a graphical file manager in 1/1000000th of what gnome-keyboard-applet takes!
gnome-netstatus-applet takes the same room!
I learned a little bit about this command (du) to find out how much space a directory takes up but what I want to know is can you tell it to exclude directories?For instance, I wanted to know how large the / directory is on my old suse10 drive but I want to exclude /home (/home was not a separate partition on that drive).

I have several flash drives, from several sizes and all have the same problem: When I plug them, the drive simply takes a LOT of time mounting and showing the data, but really, a LOT, and meanwhile the flash light blinks the desktop environment its FREEZE, until it shows the mounted drive. I did a fresh install of 11.2. When I reboot grub came up to load opensusie instead of Windows 7 MBR. Further looking at the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. I noticed it's point to hd0,2 which is my first drive three partition. I load everything including grub to sdb3 (hd1,2). When I pointed everything back to hd1,2 now I get error code 22 on reboot. How do you restore grub to sdb3 or hd1,2. I also need to repair my Windows 7 Pro MBR.

I recently installed 11.2 and Firefox takes several seconds to connect to each site.I pinged my machine, the gateway, the DNS servers (by IP address), and other various sites (by domain name), all without delay. But when I browse using Firefox, there's a 3-second delay while "looking up", and finally it connects. Any ideas what's causing this? I'm using Gnome and don't have another browser installed to test.

But if I try to plug usb headphones into my system after I boot win 7, it will crash entire system, but if I plug headphones into system before loading vmware, this does not happen. Is this a kernel issue?

The latest line is "Creating cache files for fontconfig". I don't understand why this specific operation takes too long; since almost an hour has passed. Is there a way to speed up and complete the process so that I can login and start using openSUSE? I did try hitting the spacebar and moving the mouse but nothing happens.

Selecting either has the same result of trying to boot the openSUSE. This results in error 17 and pressing any key takes me to the GRUB4DOS where I can get to the command prompt.

Shutting down my machine takes a very long time! Not convenient when one want to pack his laptop (I don't dare to when the fan is still blowing).
Upon shutdown, I press 'esc' and see what's happening. The last commands seem to hang. First, shutting down the network interfaces seem to last long than needed (eth0, pan0, wlan0). Sometimes, it stalls also on "networkmanager disconnecting from DBUS" (or something like this ) (which is the very last command executed). Hmm, I will write the exact command down.
when I am pressing the shut down button inside kde I receive this nice black screen with the green status messages indicating what was done successfuly. At the unmounting file systems though I have to wait for a 20-30mins duration to finished. I have two or three network shares but even a timeout would not take more than 1 min to appear.

My internet connection is up, but the download stops and goes, and when I try using firefox, it takes a minute to even start to load any page. I have the system monitor up and it is telling me that the network is not receiving anything except for these bursts of data aprox. every 30 seconds.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.
I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.
A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.
I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.
My ISP offers the service of native IPv6. So my ADSL router provides me with a local and global IPv6 address. However after a reboot it takes minutes to finally see the global address when using "ifconfog eth0". During that time I can't do a ping6 to an external server, which seems logical. So I waited several minutes, but no global address. After that I started a KDE session, went back to the console(<Ctrl>+<Alt>+F1) and now the global address was there. Is this normal behavior or should I file bug report?
