OpenSUSE :: How To Give Packan Repo Higher Priority
Aug 9, 2010
I have installed Audacity from Packaman repo, because one from opensuse repo has no mp3 support. Now when I do zypper dup I get offered to upgrade Audacity and change vendor:
[Code]....
However, I would like to stick to Packamn repo. I have tried to change Packan repo Priority from 99 to 120, but I still get the same offer. If I protect the Audacity in Software Management, I will I be able to upgrade to new version of Packamn's Audacity if it hits repo in future?

I have two custom tasks running daily. How do you give priority to one over the other? One of them is configured via the logrotate.conf. The other sits directly in cron.daily.I'd like the one in cron.daily to run after the script that is in logrotate. Please can you advise how to do this...

If I disable the repo-non-oss repository the update works fine. The URL I have for the repo-non-oss repository is:
Index of /distribution/11.0/repo/non-oss
This has been going on for over a week. Do I need to use a different URL for the non-oss repository? I live in New York, United States.

I wasn't paying proper attention when adding a repo to yast and need to find the file were the info is saved to delete this. The problem is that whenever i use yast it comes up with an error code saying that it can't find the data for the 'problem' repo. Have tried zypper rm but that comes up with a similar error advising that the data is in a format that was not expected. My thinking is to track the file were the yast repo source details are saved, delete this and then just add the repos that i use back.

I am running on 11.2 and i have added some repositories, like Packman, KDE 4.4 Factory, KDE 4.4 Community.I would like to have this packages automatically updated which seems not to happen. If I look into software management every now and then, I always have to "switch system packages" to get the updates via the the updated applet. So I was wondering, if it could be due to a wrong priority for those repositories? Is a high or a low priority the point where the applet is looking from which repo to update? If not, what is this priority used for?

If there are e.g. multiple repositories with the same prio, which contain different versions of an RPM. What happens if an install is made and a particular package has a dependency, where no version is specified? Would all repositories of the same pri be searched and the newest RPM version be installed. OR Would simply once the RPM is found in one of those pri's simply be taken and no further searching made. So summarized when all repositories are the same priority, is the first found RPM taken or the RPM with the latest version?

YaST2 -> Package -> All Packages -> Update if Newer Available that YaST would install the most current in the highest priority repository. Given the example data below, I thought package A, version 01, which is currently installed from repository abc, would be updated to version 02 from repository xyz.
How do you get YaST to update packages from the highest priority repository?
Code:
Sample Data:
Repository: xyz package A Ver:02 priority:50
Repository: abc package A installed Ver:01 priority:99

Code:

Version:0.9.13
Release:3.4

I've tried googling, but can't manage to figure out how to change the priority order of the sound cards in yast. From yast > hardware > sound, I can see the (default) internal audio from the motherboard, and I can see the usb headset that I would like to be using as the default. How should I go about changing the priority order on these devices?

My setup:
Acer Extensa 5635ZG
openSUSE 11.3
KDE 4.6.1 (from KDE:/Release:/46)
Nvidia G105M (with 260.19.44 driver)
After the upgrade to KDE 4.6.1 I can hear that the fan in the laptop is working harder, and hence is noisier. Before I had KDE 4.5.x (from KDE:/Release:/45).
With top I can't find anything that takes up more CPU than before.
At the moment I use Compiz instead of kwin. Kwin was a little choppy for me. (Same fan noise though.)

Just bought a new 1080p monitor (1920x1080) and it works fine in OpenSUSE 11.3. Problem is before I get the KDE start screen everything is not full screen. Now, I checked the rest of the forums and I cannot find a full list of widescreen or 16:9 grub resolutions.
Does anyone have a list of what's supported?

this post started after i have googled around about 2h without solving my problem: the higher the resolution is i set to my opensuse, the greater the symbols and text-sizes of my windows will be (pictures follow).
i installed openSuse in my vmware Workstation tryed differnt screen-sizes. for example here is a perfect display quality with a res of 1024x768: but if i change the res to 2560x1600 i get really ugly results. is there a setting to avoid the resizing of windows like firefox or dolphin /fixing the dpi?

Just did a new install of 11.4 over top of my 11.3 and when I reboot into the OS it seems to boot just fine but the video is unreadable. When I boot into the failsafe the screen has a lot of gitter and the monitor tells me it's not in preferred mode of 1680x1050 at 60hz. All resolutions higher than 1280x1024 are unreadable. Tried booting nomodeset as I've read previous ... no luck. I'm still learning linux.

Recently I have acquired 2-port KVM switch. When the monitor is connected through this KVM in Windows 7 resolution is properly detected - 1280x1024. When I go under Linux (openSUSE 11.4 with KDE, nVidia 260.19.44) there is a problem with the resolution. In the screen settings does not appear a resolution higher than 1024x768. How do I set the desired resolution in Linux?

i'm attempting to know and understand fedora more and i will spend probably the next month pouring through all the forums and documents to answer more of my own questions. but there's quite a bit here, so i'd thought i'd ask some noob questions to get me started a little.
ive installed fedora 14 64bit and chosen only kde as the desktop. i selected an extra 2 repos besides the default, fedora 14 -x86_64 and fedora 14-x86_64 -updates. i believe this kernel is installed: 2.6.35.11-83
1. i can only see the 2 extra repo's as being "checked" in kpackagekit, shouldn't i see the default repo also ?
2. i dont have an applet in the system tray indicating the system is up to date, does fedora have this by default ? also after a clean install i ran yum check-update and yum update but the message sayes: "no packages marked for update". i'm not sure if the system is auto-updated during install or not, but with other distros iv tried there is always atleast a few updates needing to be done after install.
3. is kpackagekit the fedora gui package manager ? i dont see any others.
4. i want to upgrade to nvidia drivers, but i think i am missing a non-free repo or something. when i enter: yum install kmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686 xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.x86_64 i get messages stating "no package" i get the same message with yum install nvidia-settings.i also tried this: LANG=C yum --enablerepo=rpmfusion-nonfree info akmod-nvidia but it sayes repo not found.

I'm using the 270.41.19 nvidia properietary driver for my Geforce GTX460 graphics card. I have a Sony TV connected to my HDMI and I know it supports the 1920x1080 resolution. Yes it works after gnome or other DE loads up.
But during the GRUB screen and the bootup console - It defaulted to a 640x480 resolution (as it always does with the nvidia prop driver). I usually used to check the output of hwinfo --framebuffer and choose the resolution by appending the right vga=0xabc parameter.
But now I have a problem since hwinfo says the best widescreen 16:10 framebuffer resolution that my card supports is 1280x800. Here is the output from hwinfo --vbe which should give the info about both my gfx card and my TV.
The initial nouveau driver was able to output native 1920x1080 during the bootup on the console without issues, so I guess even the properietary driver should be able to output (If my understanding is right the nvidia module loads later during the bootup and only is required for the X but not for the console itself).

Looks like this has gone walkabout. It used to be in the Education repo and still is but is missing several updates. This repo has also gone missing from wiki pages and from list of community repos in YAST. Seems a bit suspicious as though something has been changed again. Is GRAMPS now in a different repo or is it no longer supported in openSUSE? Is Education repo defunct?

I'm trying to give my computer (has ethernet wired cable connected to router) a static IP but it's not working. (BTW, I'm using ifup not network manager)I give it 192.168.1.8 and 255.255.255.0.Host-name I leave as they have it (it's the name of my computer). Click OK, accept and it all says it went through but now I can't ping anything. If I change it back to DHCP, I can ping again. What am I doing wrong?

First of all, this isn't really a problem for me, but I'm just curious. In the past when I started a data CD project, I remember that k3b used to start me with a "blank CD" of 700MB and then expand to a "blank DVD" of 4.4GB when the amount of data exceeded the capacity of a CD. Normally I just make an ISO image for the CD and burn on another machine (for a reason not relevant here).
Today, it started me off with a "blank DVD" right away. It's not a problem because the ISO format isn't different and the data is under 700MB anyway. How come? Ah wait, I think I know what it is, there's a DVD+RW in the drive at the moment so k3b got too smart and assumed that I wanted to write to it, even though I selected Create image only.

What is the official status of Firefox 3.6 in openSUSE? I've been hearing a lot about a critical security error and that it might also be a FUD, but I haven't heard about any progress. I'm just wondering who could be taking a look or who is in charge of the openSUSE repo that will have it and how is the progress in uploading FF 3.6?
