I have been tearing at my hair on how to get rid of the dashes that are on every window. For instance dolphin has this on File Edit View etc, and it allows you to navigate trough the menus using the alt f (for file) alt e (for edit), but how do you turn this feature off?
View 2 RepliesWhen I first set up my computer I had it set to auto log me in (no lectures necessary. I know the risks and I'm not root!). My son needed to do some video editing so I set him up w/an account and turned off the autologin feature. I'm trying to turn it back on now, but it won't. I've gone into Configure Desktop, Advanced tab, Login Manager, entered the requisite root password, and clicked on the Convenience tab. Enable Auto-Login is checked, and my account is selected as the user. However when I power up the machine it always presents the login screen. I've also tried enabling the password-less login but that didn't make a difference.

Since the computer is inside a private house, and I never put it on standby unless I am at home, entering a password is an unnecessary nuisance. Is there some way to turn this feature off?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI used a Karmic Live CD to make a forensic image off of a older Windows computer that has a fat32 drive. Immediately after booting it said it was correcting a problem on the drive, I assume that it was running fsck on it. I want to customize my own live CD to not do this. Though I suppose it doesn't do it for ntfs since there isn't a fsck for it yet.

I have Soad Linux installed. E17 environment really works fast for me. But I have a question, how do the one make window manager to be more feature filled? For example other e17 Linux distributions has a full path of file directory on the window tools frame so you can simply click on any directory from this list like "Home/Media/Movies" and you are brought back to the selected directory (Home for example). I managed to find how to enable it, but that section of windows manager doesn;t seem to work well, it is too small horizontally so in order to see other directories the one has to click small arrows and scroll. Resizing doens;t allow to make it bigger, how could I fix that?.
Also how do the one make the mounted mediums list on the left, similar like in gnome windows manager? I found a control panel which lets you choose between KDE, Gnome and LXDE (I think) for e17 But changing between them doesn't seem to change anything. Yes I rebooted the pc so it could take the effect, but no changes were made.

Each user gets their own monitor, keyboard, mouse & perhaps audio. The rest of the machine resources are then shared.
The last I saw on the topic was this discussion, although I have a recollection that there was going to be support in a newer version of X.Org. I've googled around quite a bit, but can't seem to find anything.
Anybody know anything? It would be a great feature to have and it's frustrating to have had such an omission since F8 :-o
I was hoping someone could tell me how to turn off the basic windows effects in compiz but keep it turned on so I can use something like Docky.
The reason is because nautilus takes a few painful seconds to open up with the effects turned on and some times I end up clicking a folder etc a second time thinking it hasn't opened.
i currently use Slackware 13.1 64 bit. when i want to get back to console after use "startx" command, my monitor suddenly off and would not turn on until i restart my computer. so i could never get back to console when i've started x window.i use ATI HIS HD 5670.

Don't know how to go about this, as I don't even know what the feature is called. When i type vi /etc/network/interfaces, i get a blank screen with blue dashes on the left side. "/etc/network/interfaces/" [New DIRECTORY]. I am running Ubuntu 11.04 server and am trying to set static ip. I found a work around but why is this happening?
View 9 Replies View RelatedOnce I select Ubuntu 9.10 from Grub, it shows the logo, the logo disappears, a jet black screen shows with 2 horizontal white dashes appear at the top.
I recently uninstalled Firefox 3.6 pre using synaptic to go with the stable Firefox 3.6 installed with the PPA repository that was given in the Ubuntu wiki. It installed and ran fine but when I rebooted, ubuntu wouldn't start.
I went into recovery mode a few times, tried to fix any broken packages and when it said it was fixed, I tried rebooting and the same error occurred. I also tried to use dpkg-reconfigure for the xserver-xorg and then ran startx but x didn't load properly. Some more debugging and a few driver errors came up involving intel so I installed a package which fixed that.
Ran the dpkg-reconfigure again and ran startx. This time x loaded but it was a jet black screen and I had to hold ctrl + alt and hit a few F keys to get back to the prompt.
I understand this could be a xulrunner error so I tried reinstalling xulrunner-1.9.1. I also rolled back my repositories to get the Firefox 3.5 branch and I installed the original Firefox 3.5, ran firefox --version to make sure and I finally have that back installed.
I tried rebooting and running the OS normally, but again it failed at the same point. What exactly should I do next? Yes, I could reinstall but it's such a small problem with maybe 1 or 2 broken packages, is there anyway I can save my current ubuntu system (as I have made countless configuration changes months ago and I do not want to do it again)?
I notice that in 11.4 when I try to autocomplete (Tab Key) to /etc or /etc/init.d/ it auto completes differently than the way it did in other 11.x openSUSE versions. i.e.

Whenever I change workspaces, the compiz cube rocks to a stop, taking up precious time. How can I get rid of that rocking feature?

I use OpenSUSE 11.3+KDE and I set Konqueror as my file manager, since I got used to it for some years.My problem is that I cannot use the embedded image viewing feature of Konqueror as I could previously (KDE 3.5). Now i left click on an image and ok, it appears properly, but then I move to the next image. First I have to navigate back and then click onto the next image, which is quite inconvenient.

well I install the printer, everything works perfectly.....but, when I turn off the PC, and turn it on again, the printer does NOT work!, I send work for being printed but mothing happens , Ubuntu tells me that the job was printed but ... no case, my printer does not print it.
I have to install it again since cero. what can I don to stop install it every time I turn off the computer ?
The problem come after i kill the Xorg using the kill command,and the screen turns to black without anything so that i can do nothing. The problem goes on after reboot

While typing thismorning I inadvertently somehow disabled the keyboard (the mouse worked fine).I discovered that the keyboard worked on bootand I could log into my account (or other accounts)with the keyboard, but ONLY within my account wasthe keyboard dead. Rebooting the computer did NOTcure the problemI finally cured it by logging in as root, and renamingthe .kde4 directory in my home directory as .kde4xand then logging back in as myself.But (a) what did I do and how did I do it and (b) isthere a cleaner way to undo this should I do it again?

I hoped old oversimplistic gnome with disgusting theme, but it was great and fast. Then I had run compiz. I want compiz only on the gnome, on KDE I want Kwin. I could override compiz with

My screen resolution is only 640x480 after I installed the nVidia driver by authority method of 1-click install.
And then I run nvidia-xconfig,/etc/X11/xorg.conf was built.Restart my PC.
I selected the default mode to run opensuse.My screen was black.
So I select the failsafe mode and remove the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
I try to copy my ubuntu 10.3 /etc/X11/xorg.conf,but I failed,the screen was black when booting default mode.
Now my LCD resolution is so low.
Graphics card:nVidia Geforce 5200
Monitor:19 inch widescreen LCD
And I can keep the best LCD resolution 1440x900@60Hz in the Windows XP successfully.
