OpenSUSE :: Some Keys No Longer Working In Xterm Or Konsole

Aug 8, 2011

Just had a weird problem in konsole at the command line. Some of my keys are not recognized as if they are not being pushed. They work fine in other applications and work fine if I push the Shift key with it and capitalize the letter. Some of the keys are the c, g, r, w, 3, 8,and 9. C, G, R, W, #, *, and ( all work so I do not believe it is hardware as I am using this computer to type this message. It is just at the command line. I don't know what I did to make this happen or how to fix it. I am using openSUSE 11.3 with the KDE 4.4.4 release 3. I tried reinstalling xterm and konsole from yast but it did not fix it.

Slackware :: 12.2 - Firefox 3.5.6 - Go Into A KDE Konsole Xterm

Jan 1, 2010

I'd try here first, since I am running slackware, though it's a firefox problem ... To verify bug, just go into a KDE konsole xterm, and do

[13:35 ~]$ mkdir ~/ffbug
[13:35 ~]$ touch ~/ffbug/_$'31'_
[13:35 ~]$ firefox file://$(echo ~)/ffbug &

(This assumes you didn't already have a ~/ffbug directory, and you have firefox 3.5.6 installed -- the prior firefox id not have this problem) What you will probably see is firefox trying to display a listing of the ~/ffbug directory, but instead showing an error message: XML Parsing Error: not well-formed. I posted this in the mozillazine forum, where it got read 20 times, but no response.

Programming :: Xterm/konsole "-e" Changes Control Char Interpretations?

Oct 15, 2009

starting apps with xterm "-e" seems to change control chars. I want this to not happen, but I have no idea how to stop it. for example:

xterm -e ssh localhost gdb
ctrl-x ctrl-a

I see see the character sequence ^X^A apear in the gdb session. However gdb should interpret those characters and go into tui mode. It doesn't. If I instead run each thing in succession (without -e)

xterm
ssh localhost
gdb
ctrl-x ctrl-a

it works as it should. The same thing happens to konsole so it's not just xterm. Can you help me understand what's happening and how to fix? I need to use "-e" method.

Slackware :: Konsole Does Not Recognize Keypad Arrow Keys On Slackware 13.0 / Fix It?

Jan 18, 2010

Konsole does not respond to the following keys on my stand-along usb
keypad:
rightarrow,leftarrow,uparrow,downarrow,home,end,pageup,pagedown

Both of the other terminal emulators on slack do recognize
these keys (xterm and xfce terminal emulator).

I can also confirm that xev, if launched from konsole will recognize
these keys.

Konsole is my terminal emulator of choice and it is really nice to
be able to use my left hand for navigation and command retrieval.

Also, keypad arrows work in X apps.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Keyboard Special Keys For Audio Not Working 11.4

May 26, 2011

I've been making some progress with my new Dell Inspiron n5110 and the OpenSUSE 11.4. After searching through the net I found some drivers to get my laptop going. Now I'm facing the following problem: I want to adjust the audio volume using a special key combination on my laptop(fn+F11 to rise, fn+F12 to lower, and another key that works as mute). Although the sound itself works fine, when I use these keys the have no effect on the volume. It stays exactly the same. Some I ask myself are the drivers for the sound card installed? In "Playback Devices" there are two devices: Internal audio analog stereo(which is the one that is working) and GF108 High Definition Audio Controller Digital Stereo(HDMI). The lsusb provides:

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 8086:0189 Intel Corp.
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 1bcf:2880 Sunplus Innovation Technology Inc.
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0bda:0138 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub

So I searched for some Realtek drivers and came up with nothing. If you have any idea on how to get my audio running or how to make the special keys working, please let me know!

OpenSUSE :: 3D Effects No Longer Working

Sep 15, 2010

I did an update to KDE 4.5 recently, and afterwards noticed that 3D effects were no longer enabled. When I try to enable them from desktop settings, I get a pop up in the panel that says another application is preventing compositing (or something like that).

I have the nvidia 256.53 drivers installed and 'glxinfo' says direct rendering is on. I'm also using X server 1.9, but compositing was working with the new X server before I did the update to 4.5.

OpenSUSE Network :: Wlan0 No Longer Working?

May 6, 2011

So I have been having this problem with my WiFi which isn't working. I am currently running on the following:

uname -a

Code:
Linux mmartin6510 2.6.31.14-0.8-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-06 18:09:24 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

I am also using gnome-NetworkManager. If I left-click on the NetworkManager icon down on the taskbar near the clock it shows "Wired Networks" with eth0 connected, and "Wireless Networks" is blank under the heading, last week I believe it said something like "device unavailable" or something like that.

Network Details:
iwconfig
Code:
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
[Code]....

I was curious about when the last time I was able to successfully use my wifi so I checked to see in NetworkManger and it just so happend to be that I was on a business trip in Atlanta on a different network then am usually connected to. Don't know if that has to do with anything but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Also, I thought it may have something to do with assigning an IP address static-or-auto but I am not too familiar with NetworkManager to check that.

Slackware :: Kde Konsole And Aliases Not Working

Jul 18, 2010

I am running KDE and currently using Konsole as my terminal emulator. I am finding that if I start a konsole from the menu list I can type alias and see a list of default aliases plus the ones I have define in my .bash_login file.

The problem seems to occur on restarting KDE. I generally leave everything open and when KDE restarts everything comes back. Saves me having to do it myself.

Unfortunately when the konsoles pop up they no longer have the aliases. There will be none of the predefined ones, nor the ones that I have defined.

Would I be better off using a more standard alternative like xterm in this case or is this something that has a simple explanation?

I suspect it has something to do with not being a login shell. If I look at the Profile in the menu for the konsole it specifically says "/bin/bash -l" for the command on the new one that I opened up, but "/bin/bash" for the one that was automatically brought back.

Is there some reason KDE would do this? Running Slackware 13.1 64 bit. KDE 4.4.3

Slackware :: Intel Graphics / Vertical Lines From Xpdf/gv Under Xterm Stick To Xterm Window Making It Unreadable?

Jun 13, 2011

Start xpdf or gv. Click an xterm to be active and slide it over xpdf/gv. Vertical lines from xpdf/gv under the xterm stick to the xterm window above and make it unreadable.

The problem does NOT show with KDE default settings with display effects on but does show in fvwm, xfce etc, and in KDE without effects.

On a system with a Sandy Bridge integrated graphics (i5-2400) the problem went away by downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.13.0. But it was not enough for another system with 945G which needed downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.12.0.

General :: Alt-d Alt-f Etc. Stops Working In Xterm?

May 18, 2011

Something weird sometimes happens on my Debian system. Typically at the prompt line I can use combo like alt-d to delete a word, alt-f to go to the next word, etc. But quite regularly something happens in my xterm that makes alt-d and alt-f not work anymore: suddenly they print 'ä' (alt-d) and 'æ' (alt-f).

Note that this happens in a terminal that was acting like I wanted to at first. But then somehow must send a code or something that changes the behavior of the terminal. It happens in xterm because that's where I always work. If I go to a console by doing ctrl+alt+f1 then by default alt-d does what I want (delete word) and so does alt-f. Maybe that I could screw that one too by doing some bad manipulation: I just don't know because I don't work in text mode.

Also note that if I spawn an xterm from the "broken" xterm, then the new xterm work as I expect. What is going on? What am I turning on that was off previously? My .Xresources says that and, once again, when I open an xterm it behaves as I expect it, it's only later on that "something" makes that it goes back to broken "I-print-characters-with-diacritics-and-other-nonsense" mode:

$ more .Xresources
XTerm.vt100.eightBitInput: false
XTerm*eightBitInput: False

OpenSUSE :: Bold 'Konsole' Fonts Get Cut Off?

Jul 30, 2010

Got a problem with fonts in 'Konsole'-windows. 'Bold' fonts are being cut off at the last letter. Sometimes only half the letter is visible, sometimes the letter is completely invisible. No problems with fonts in xterm. Set the standards in '/etc/DIR_COLORS', but the problem still exists in (for example):

- man-pages (headings)
- perldoc (headings)
- vi (infos at bottom, like -- INSERT --)
- ...

Is there a solution to turn off bold fonts in Konsole completely? Would be my favourite! I'm using OpenSUSE 11.3, KDE 4.4.4 "release 2"...

Whenever I open a Konsole via the control panel widget the font in the console window is Monospace 8. Increasing the font via settings remains in place only for the time the window is active. When opening Konsole again the font is set to tiny Monospace 8 again. I have checked the settings in the *.profile files in ~ /.kde4/share/apps/konsole. They all contain my preferred font. Still, Monospace 8 comes up. Where else should I look. I have checked all *.rc files too, that are related to konsole.
