View 4 RepliesWhere are temp files stored in SuSE 11.0? I am trying to find all of those videos and .jpgs and other miscellaneous files I've downloaded in the past, and which are now only taking up space on my hard drive. I'd like to clean out all of that. I have looked in both /tmp and in /.kde but don't see what I'm looking for.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using Opensuse11.4 and have kmail and Firefox. When I click a url: link in kmail it opens a new tab in Firefox. The problem is that the url is linked to my temp cache files as this file:///var/tmp/kdecache-terry/krun/1589.0.ctt
The tab this opens has most of the link icons stripped out and the links to other parts of the website don't work and I get a "file not found" error and the link is to a file which doesn't exist file:///contribute.php3
This is only a minor annoyance as I can right click > copy the url and paste it to the address bar in Firefox then it works ok. I don't think it anything in either programme that's broken because this happened after an update to Opensuse 11.4 on my previous laptop and has happened again on my new laptop with a fresh install.
What is the best way to try and clean up orphaned files in openSUSE 11.2 gnome? My understanding is there is not a zypper command for this.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI can't login due to my file-system being full. I found the main area with the large usage. Var/log is taking 99.5% of my var folder. On a full file-system scan Var/log is taking up 85% of disk use. File-system capacity is 36 gig. Temp is cleared after each boot.
What can I do to clean up any unnecessary files. I can only boot in safe mode and have limited navigation skills. To get scan results I booted a live-disc.
Opensuse 11.2 gnome 64 bit.
I configured cron to clean my /tmp directory, should I also add other locations to clean and especially /var/tmp.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a web server whos DocumentRoot is:/tmp/wwwNow, /temp/www/fake/ is a directory that contains a series of other files/folders.What I want to do is access the files in /temp/www/fake as if they were in the root directory (/temp/www/)For example:
could either be located in "/temp/www/test.php"
-or-
located in "/temp/www/fake/test.php"
so "http://127.0.0.1/test.php" would essentially call both directories. Is this possible? Whould I do this through apache or through the actual file system somehow? (Like some sort of symbolic link?) I would love to hear your input.
i am trying to delete temp files using rm -rf but i am getting this error "bash: /usr/bin/rm: Arg list too long"

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a shell script that need to create some files:
1) backup files of user passed in file ( that will be written by this shell ).
2) temp files that the shell will create and later delete/remove.
This shell script will be used from my local dir ( I am not a super or a sysadmin ). Users of this shell will call this script to run on their local files in their respective directories. When my script runs, it errors with the following:
cp: cannot create regular file `./listfile.txt.backup': Permission denied
/home/myUser/tools/myShellScript: line 12: listfile.txt: Permission denied
for the temp I was able to avoid this error by creating the temp file in the /tmp directory. All I want is for this shell script to run, create/modify/backup files in user's local dirs.
The user dir has the following permission:
drwxr-xr-x testDir
the file that needs to be backed-up has:
-rw-r--r-- listfile.txt.
I have an NTFS file system nfs-automounted on our RedHat servers. Users can read and write to the file system no problem, and can create new files, edit them, and delete them to their heart's content. The only issue is that utilities such as "dos2unix" cannot create temporary working files:
$ dos2unix events.0818.dat
dos2unix: converting file events.0818.dat to UNIX format ...
Failed to open output temp file: Operation not permitted
dos2unix: problems converting file events.0818.dat
This isn't limited to "dos2unix"; any other utility that creates a temporary working file gets the same problem. If I copy the file to a local file system like /tmp, it works fine. Here's the kicker: this works fine on Solaris systems. I can take the "dos2unix" utility over to a Solaris system that has that exact same NTFS file system automounted via NFS, and it works. No issues creating temporary working files at all.
I use of lenny beside Windows and have some ntfs partition and one fat32. I mounted them in start up but in my fat drive I cant clean any files or cut files to another place.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm looking to use a vnc client so I can connect to my other windows machine. I thought i'd use realVNC as I've used it before from windows and it seems to do the job... the problem is that when I try and install it I get the following message: Package /temp/vnc-4_1_3-x86_linux.rpm could not be installed.
Details: Subprocess failed. Error RPM failed:error: Failed dependencies: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 is needed by vnc-4.1.3-1.i386
Is it a problem that I'm trying to install this on a 64 bit Suse 11.1 installation? Can anyone recommend a solution (I can't find the package to install), or any other good vnc clients I can easily use?
I have noticed that after I uninstall a package from my system the hidden files in my home directory are still there. For example I used to have an application called proxychains installed. But then after I uninstalled it with the Ubuntu Software Center there was still a .proxychains folder in my home folder. Is there a way to remove all these files? Also are they stored anywhere else except home? I ask because I would like to clean up my system and I am O.K. with reconfiguring my applications if I do decide to install them at a later date.

View 2 Replies View RelatedStill working on the mask of files for shared folder. I now have a shared folder with the exact behavior I expect :
Code:
sudo addgroup share_group
sudo mkdir /media/volume/shared_dir
sudo chgrp share_group /media/volume/shared_dir
sudo chmod g+s /media/volume/shared_dir
sudo chmod 770 /media/volume/shared_dir
sudo setfacl -d -m group::rwx /media/volume/shared_dir
sudo setfacl -d -m other::--- /media/volume/shared_dir
emma@box:/media/volume/shared_dir$ ls -al
total 8
drwxrws---+ 2 root share_group 4096 2010-02-09 12:53 .
drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4096 2010-02-09 11:58 ..
-rw-rw----+ 1 emma share_group 0 2010-02-09 12:53 test
By default, user from the group can modify this file. That's perfect.
I have define the share in Samba this way :
Code:
[share]
comment = Shared Folder
path = /media/volume/shared_dir
browseable = yes
guest ok = no
read only = no
hide dot file = yes
# force group = share_group
# create mask = 0660
# directory mask = 0770
# force create mask = 0660
# force directory mask = 0770
When drag & dropping a file in this share, here is the default mask:
Code:
emma@box:/media/volume/shared_dir$ ls -al
total 192
drwxrws---+ 2 root share_group 4096 2010-02-09 12:54 .
drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4096 2010-02-09 11:58 ..
-rw-rwx---+ 1 emma share_group 6148 2010-02-09 12:54 .DS_Store
-rw-rwxr--+ 1 emma share_group 176684 2009-12-21 23:33 IMG_7487.jpg
So the dropped file have execution rights for the group, and read access for other. I expected it to have the same rights than the file created directly using the touch command. I tried to play with the mask options, without success. The file has been dropped from my mac, which is a Unix like OS. I guess that some authorization access are inherited from the original file, for the user and other parts. But where does the group authorization come from ? Moreover, is is possible to define in samba a default mask, whatever the authorization of the original file?
After I used Ubuntu Tweak to clean up ALL the config files, I retsrated and Grub won't show the menu anymore. I'm still able to get to the latest kernels though but I want to log in to my windows.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWe see posts here occasionally with complaints like, "my PC doesn't finish booting; it goes so far, then I get a black screen." There will follow the usual suggestions to check the video drivers, or if it's a new installation, to check the DVD MD5 checksum, etc., etc.
I suggest checking the hardware as well, especially if you haven't made any changes recently. If your PC seems to have been running normally for quite a while, and this is a problem that has only recently (and relatively suddenly) popped up, check the connections. Make sure the RAM is seated properly. (This is especially important if the PC has been moved around recently.)
But most of all, check for dust buildup! We had a PC yesterday that started shutting down after about 3-4 minutes. This morning, it was a lot colder in the shop, so it lasted almost 5-6 minutes -- and that was our clue. My assistant tore into the machine and didn't see anything obvious; he then removed the fan over the CPU heatsink and saw a ton of dust. (On this particular PC, the fan obscured direct observation of the heatsink fins.)
