OpenSUSE :: X11 Directory Replicating In /usr/bin, Filling Disk?

Noticed that one of my partitions on openSuse 11.1, mounted as /usr, filled up suddenly with over 20 GB of something. Tracked it down to /usr/bin, in which the X11 directory contains 2353 items and another X11 directory, recursively at least 11 times that I've expanded without reaching the last X11 directory. The newest files in each directory are dated 11/24/10.
Any idea of what's happening? How to stop it before it fills the disk?
I have a directory /sanvol/ifr/ which contains 90,000 files and 2 subdirectories containing 60,000 files. I need to copy the contents of /sanvol/ifr to /sanvol/edm/. The cp command will not work because there are too many files.
I tried the following: find /sanvol/ifr/ type f -name '*' -exec cp -p {} /sanvol/edm/. ;
but this copies all files including whats in the subdirectories to /sanvol/edm/
I need to replicate exactly the contents of /sanvol/ifr/ to /sanvol/edm/ and preserve file attributes and dates.
For a while my root partition has been filling up for no apparent reason. I I have been deleting things to find out it fills up again in a mater of days. To make it more 'interesting', there is a disparity between what I get from df and what the du command is telling me. After dismounting the other file systems and turning off applications, this is what i get:
du claims that I'm using 29G on that partition, which sounds about right (this is my OS and basic /home partition, everything else is elsewhere). df on the other hand is telling me here that out of 69G, 64G are in use with only 54M left.
I have a lot of data on a nfs store external to an Ubuntu machine. I've had problems with the storage becoming full and have spent a very long time deleting files to get absolutely nowhere! Over 25GB of deletions on the 80GB disk has only cleared 1.5GB of space...
You can see below the hidden .snapshot directory, the disk usage for the nfs-store is coming out at 97GB when the disk is only 80GB in size, and the two directories I want on the disk are about 22GB in size.The .snapshot directory appears to have been made on Friday, I'd like to know if I can:
1) find out what command ran to create/update it
2) re-run the command to update the directory or remove the directory

Some of my cronjobs are filling up files in my / directory. How do I make this stop? One of my cron jobs uses wget:[URL].. The bexcb0.php file writes a file and then echos a result if it is sucsesfull. These echo results are being put into bexcb0.php files in my /root folder and are piling up.
My / folder is filling up with files bexcb0.php etc bexcb0.php bexcb0.php.1 bexcb0.php.2 bexcb0.php.3 bexcb0.php.4 bexcb0.php.5 etc How do I make this stop? If I just remove the echo will they stop writing to the / folder?
I'm running an OpenSuse 11.2 box at home which updates a mysql database 4 times a day then posts 34Mb to my website. It's exactly the same amount of data each time, and my scripts*TRUNCATEs then rewrites the database with the latest data - so the database size remains the same.
There's a problem (I think with the script) however which means that everytime the script runs, approximately 34Mb of space on my hard disk is mysteriously taken up. I'll have to get that script fixed...
I can't, however find the files which are eating up my diskspace at the rate of 140Mb per day. I've done various searches (mainly with Dolphin) including hidden files immediately after running my flaky script and looking for any files created/modified in the previous few minutes when the 34Mb has disappeared.
There are LOTS of files in /proc (which I don't think is actually on my HD right?) and also in /var. There's nothing much in /tmp (on a separate partition) or any log files that I can see. The box has been running this script daily for the last 6 weeks so I'm hoping there's a load of files somewhere I can get rid of, then fix my script.
I have a directory /var/log/data its about 80 GB,It filling up quit rapidly.I don't have much space left in the system them So i will attaching another External HDD.My question is that i need to mount /var/log/data to new HDD.So i have old data and pulse new coming up.I don't want to copy data from /var/log/data then mount new HDD to /var/log/data you know what i am taking about is there a simple way like linking or any other.
I just encountered a very weird issue and I am having hard time replicating and identifying the root cause. We have one RH9 server and we received an alert that the /var reached 85%, I checked and found out that /var/log/audit.d is occupying most of the space. It has a lot of files inside it consisting file size of 21MB each everyday. I ask the customer if can housekeep and it eventually climbed up to 100%. My colleague did some house keeping but what he did was he compressed the audit.d directory and remove it.
After that users are complaining they cannot telnet to the server even though the service is on. I have recreated the audit.d directory and restarted the xinetd as usual. Still the same problem. And the weird thing is that I cannot even switch to any user from the root. I tried to do "su - someuser" but it hangs there without doing anything. I also tried to telnet, it will ask for login and password but same thing it hangs in there. Did some restart on xinetd and did "chkconfig telnet off" "chkconfig telnet on" but with no success. Could this be caused by the deletion of audit.d? Or is the 100% utilization of /var the system could not cope up? The good thing is everything worked fine after restart. But still the root cause is unknown. If I check /var/log/secure it shows the user being authenticated though it is not getting any session. /var/log/messages also does not reveal anything.

We have several production machines serving our static content. I want an automatic operation where I would only need to upload to one of them and it will get replicated/mirrored to all machines.Either that or distribute automatically from local source to all machines. First option is obviously better since all machines reside on same LAN and remote to our office.
Another feature I am looking for is to get a full report on what got transferred and if any problems occurred immediately (since usually these deployments can mean downtime for us). Looking around I saw rsync.Using CentOS 5.4-5.5 btw.
I recently set up replication on a production server and some rows are not making it to the tables on the slave. After 3 days I can see 200+ entries (of 161,000~) that are on the master and not the slave. Logs under /var/log including mysqld.log, mysql.status, messages do not show any problem.I have already tried dropping the DB on the slave and setting up the replication again by doing a stop slave, set slave options such as were in the logging to start, drop table, restore the dump previously made by the master, start slave, but the issue persists.
I following the documentation on the MySQL site for setting up replication so I'm not sure why this is having issues.What can I do to investigate and fix this?
I have set up a master BIND DNS server with 2 slaves. All the services start up fine on all 3 servers, but zones and named.conf info is not being replicated. The 3 servers are tentatively installed on a Xen virtual server for testing purposes. All 3 servers are 64bit and installed with: -> CentOS release 5.4 (Final) - 2.6.18-164.10.1.el5xen -> BIND 9.3.6-P1-RedHat-9.3.6-4.P1.el5_4.2
All 3 servers are fully updated. All 3 servers have static IP addresses. The services on all 3 servers start up without any apparent issues. Master server: # /etc/init.d/named restart ; tail -f /var/log/messages
There is a little strange behaviour on my usb disk. Today i try to access it and, when i list directory i cannot find one of them.A result of the command ls -l give me this result for that directory:

The disk is formatted in EXT3.i try chmod and chown, but the system give me a generic I/O error.The box is a new 1Tb box, ubuntu is 11.04.
I created a thread about a problem a I had with my hard disk clicking whilst idle little while ago and I may now have stumbled upon a possible solution. The strange thing with the problem is that Ubuntu/Kubuntu didn't cause this problem but Opensuse 11.2 does.

Problem Description
Some ATA harddrives perform very frequent head unloads under Linux significantly shortening their lifespans. Root cause
The inactivity timer for head unload is configured too aggressively either via ATA APM (Advanced Power Management) feature or other non-standard means. Such aggressive settings are very fragile to changes in IO pattern and under Linux many such drives unload their heads only to re-load them shortly. Note that this relentless unloading/reloading cycle can also be triggered under Windows by installing programs which can alter the IO pattern (e.g. certain vaccine programs which runs in background).
Now two of the listed models with this problem are basically identical to my model (Dell Inspiron 1520) and basically share the same hardware: Dell Vostro 1500 and XPS 1520.
The workaround listed is to:
set APM to 254

I've just made the switch from Windows 7 to Ubuntu (not dual-boot!) and have been messing around with Conky and AWN while trying to get a unique layout. However, while I absolutely love Ubuntu 10.10 so far, one thing that I'm missing is the ability to hover on an applications icon and have a mini-popup appear displaying what windows are open for that application. For instance, right now I've got 4 Firefox windows open. I know I can click on the icon and see a list of open windows, but I'd prefer to see the "preview" thumbnail that tells me what is on the page. For instance, anyone who's familiar with ch131 knows that their HTML <title> stays the same on all pages, so if I'm letting 6 full movies load overnight and want to start watching them when I wake up, I have to go through the list and click on each one till I arrive on the correct window.
I am trying to get the total file size for certain files per directory.I am usingfind `pwd` /DirectoryPath -name '*.dta' -exec ls -l {} ; | awk '{ print $NF ": " $5 }' > /users/cergun/My Documents/dtafiles.txtbut this lists all the files in the directoriesI need the total per directory for all dta files.
My dual proc, dual core Opteron MSI Master2FAR motherboard failed, and I try to boot a disk, used on this board as boot disk, on an Intel based Gigabyte GA-965-DS3. Both systems are x86_64 architecture.
The OS is on both systems is openSUSE 11.1.
On booting the disk on the Gigabyte, the disk is seen correctly by the BIOS, but not by the OS, and there is no /dev/sdX; no /dev/disk/... either. I am taken to a login shell from the ramdisk.
When I just mount this disk on the Gigabyte (booted with the Gigabyte's original boot disk) everything seems fine. No suprise to me, since the disk was fine, and was unmounted gracefully and physically taken off the MSI before the board failed.
I think that the cause lies in the fact that the harddisk controller on the Gigabyte is different from the MSI, and the driver for that controller is not available at boot time.
I have two questions:
- is my assumption correct, or is something else going on?
- if I am right, is there a way to get this disk booting on the Gigabyte (or on another system, for that matter)?
You might want to ask why I want to boot this disk on the Gigabyte in the first place, since I can mount it and see all data on it. I have a reason for that, but telling that story would make this topic too long, and it's too off-topic. Most certainly I will get to that in another topic.
I'm booting to Kali 2.0 live from USB and wanted to add persistence, but I can't get OpenVAS setup. The setup script runs and eventually fails due to no more disk space. Here's my df -h output:

When the setup runs it fills up root (/) which is only 872mb. This is a 16gb USB so I'm wondering if there's a way to allocate some of the 11gb of unallocated space to root? I couldn't tell how to do this with gparted, would I need to build a custom Kali iso or something with different partitioning?
I have a pre-printed form that I need to fill in. Is it possible to scan it, fill it in on screen, and then put the original form in the printer and get things to print out on that original form? I know that I can scan the form and fill it in on screen and print out on a blank piece of paper, but I need to use the original form
My /tmp directory is being filled up with root-tmp.####. I suspect they are being created by bastille-tmpdir-defense.sh, but they do not seem to get removed.

i would like to determine the hard drive partition associated with a directory. ie i have a disk partition as user with mount point Home. this i think contains my Home directory. a downloaded program resides in /usr/bin. now there is a /usr/local/bin with nothing in it. my question is how can i tell what disk partition /usr/bin resides on. if it is on my user defined partition i will not lose the program on a system install i think?
I'm quite new to linux, but I've managed to grasp some basics. Now my intention here to create a virtual directory, which I resorted to creating an Image File so that I can mount it and have my folder have a dedicated storage. I will mount this image as a loop device. Well it's not much of a problem, but I would like to know whether this is suitable. Say I want to create a 25GB Image.
Is this recommended? I'm using block size as 1G which is really huge, so I was wondering, if this is actually recommended. From what I read, some said that it's only advisable to use 4096k or lower, but what I found was that these suggestions are very dated (year 2003), and it is now 2010, so I would like to know if it makes any big differences.
I would like to move a user's home directory to a different disk. Is there a "clean" way to do this? Specifically, is it safe to just copy all the .* files to the new destination and then change the home in the user config? Or are there maybe environment entries with absolute paths which will cause problems with this strategy?

Just today I started getting notices about lack of disk space on my system. After much digging I found that .xsession-errors and .xsession-errors.old were taking nearly 70GB of space combined. The primary message I'm getting over and over again is: SSL_Write: I/O Error I have been unable to figure out what's causing this error.
I am using my ubuntu server as my home router.Everything is working as expected with one exception.y DSL modem is a POS and every now and again it looses connection to the router. Sometimes it needs to be reset and sometimes it does not.Either way, when this happens my ubuntu server needs to reacquire an IP from my ISP. If it screws up when I'm at home it's no big deal, but if it happens when I'm not around my housemates have taken to hitting the reset switch on the server. I'm not a big fan of this so I wrote a script to ping my ISP's gateway. If it's unavailable it bounces the eth0 interface and tries to get an IP. I am running this script every couple of minutes in a cron job. Now I'm getting syslog entries like
